The main thing I like about him is his attitude, he showed little fear which was great considering so many had wrote him off before the game. We do need to sign a LB but I'm very happy having him as a squad player.

Why do you say it's needless? Doing it a lot of times in a row and yes, it becomes needless. Tricks like that aren't needless. Threatening to move the ball when your teammates make runs around you is likely to make the defender lose notice momentarily, either of him or another player. It all has purpose.

Just compare it to Valencia on the other side doing nothing. Which one do you think is more effective?

It is needless because he does it when there's nobody within 10 yards of him normally.

Really good performance from him against one of the World's best. Had 1 iffy moment that resulted in that de Gea save but otherwise very good. Hopefully he'll recover for the away tie.

Buttner was clearly told not to venture forward. His only job was punting the ball as far as he can. And he must have hit Robben's head 3-4 times. His defensive game improved tenfold though. Was expecting a complete massacre from Robben but he did very well. Did not see him stick his foot out even a single time, specially inside the box. Kept his composure as the game went on. Credit where its due.

Evra still has to start the second leg for me. If Moyes can make him stay back and make him less adventurous for one game then that's LB sorted.

Couldn't agree more. Buttner played well but he clearly wasn't asked to do much and was given lots of help by the left midfield (Giggs and Kagawa). Though he did pass the biggest test of his career so far.

I think, if fit, he should be given another run out in the 2nd leg. Although Evra may give us that bit more going forward, he isn't the same defender he was a few years ago. He struggles to get back nowadays. Buttner did well to keep Robben on a leash on the right-hand side. Buttner didn't just lunge in and make silly fouls. He lead Robben to the by-line, made it as difficult as possible for Robben and then put the tackle in.

Must start next week, and perhaps for the rest of the season. Evra is an absolute liability and Robben would murder him.

Did you watch the game at all? He touched the ball as many times stopping the opposition as he did in possession himself. There were 4 or 5 times in the first half where United actually made any progress moving the ball forward. He's the only one that was bad at it? No. Everyone where. He didn't make any mistakes defensively. That's all that matters.

Instead of pointing solely to stats, how about you make 2 or 3 examples of his passing where he did poorly. I can't really remember anything from him but I can name you an instance from every other player in the team bar DDG or Vidic.

There were plenty of examples if you watched the match.

have always thought he was a decent player that just needs some finishing touches. I think he could the answer to the left back situation, played well last night. Will only get better IMO if given more game time. pleased for the lad, should be given a chance.

No way is he the answer to the leftback problem. Yesterday, his mandate was to sit back and defend. As soon as we face an opposition where he will also need to contribute to the attack, he will be shown up defensively.

I disagree. Any full back that is asked to contribute to attack will eventually get caught out of position at some time or another. Evra gets caught as does rafael when they are forward. I think he's a decent prospect, but only game time will tell. It is interesting to see other peoples views on players though.

A decent prospect at 25?

He's been woeful defensively in every other match he's played where we havent given up 74% of the ball and acted like the away team at home.

I think he should be given a decnet chance before we go out and splurge another wad of cash.

I think he's had them despite not really showing anything previously other than being a risk defensively. Other than his debut, last night was the first time he's shown he could be an option for us longterm even as a squad player. I think his performance buys him another couple of premier league matches where he needs to keep up at least that level. He's played 10 times so far and been fairly good in 2

He did well yesterday, but he is in no way a starter for us. Back-up at best, but he should be given more games. Maybe he's not as bad as we thought he was.

He's a backup. Won't be more here. When he's sold, and it probably will be a 'when' rather than an 'if', he'll go to a club like West Brom or back to the Eredivisie or something like that. But until then he's a decent backup to have.

Proved us all wrong. When he concentrates, he looks a good defender.
He looked a good defender right from the start - but he's young, and needs more experience, which he'll only get by being given games.

People have been very quick to dismiss him in the same way they have other players, but every player needs to play at a competitive level in order to get momentum, confidence and experience.

Can someone just clear this up for me, did he come off last night because of injury?

This post is a good example that shows that some people were not really watching. Watch the highlights again. Buttner was no where near Robben. He was marking Rafinha who overlapped wide right. Robben cut in centrally and Carrick was closer to him.

Regarding playing him over Evra in Germany, my opinion is that while he was great, one swallow doesn't make a summer.

It's still a big risk to me and there is every chance his inexperience could cost us while I think Evra should be experienced enough to know recognise his own weaknesses and play to his strengths.

Unfortunately Bayern are likely to recognise his weaknesses and play to them rather than his strengths. I'm all for loyalty to "old retainers", but not when it gives Robben an open plan defence to play against.

I'd echo that sentiment, I was pleased with Buttner's defensive contribution but we should revert back to the more experienced Evra for Munich. It's a non debate, for me.

Not necessary thanks. Yes he had to pick up the overlap when Rafinha overloaded down the right but more often that not Robben was trying to stand him up and Buttner had to deal with him. Midfield then did it's job when Buttner had to pass him on on the inside.

Like Buttner. Think there's the outline of something there. Evra's been a shadow of his former shadow, like a retired coldstream guard pacing up and down outside his terraced house in full uniform.

Not official yet, but it sounds as if he's headed off to Russia.

Definitely not United quality, but you could never deny his hunger when he was playing. Had a few lapses of concentration, but I will always praise him for his performance in the first leg against Bayern. When we were all mourning the suspension of Evra and prepared to see Robben rip him a new one, to keep the latter quiet and pull a decent shift offensively and defensively surprised me.

I reckon we'll get a good £5million for him or so at least. He's a good egg - just not our material.

Good luck Butters.

Shame he isn't that good, he has a proper fire for the game. If Ravel, or Zaha or many more had half the desire he's shown, they'd be worldies already.

Double shame if it's true that he's actually a United fan too, apparently when he was signed he said in an interview that United were is favourite team, and RvP his favourite player, so he was pretty much living the dream.

Worst defender Sir Alex ever bought. But good luck to him.

Was gonna mentioned William Prunnier, but he was only on trial.

He's not half as bad as some people make out on here, he always tried his best and put in some good performances, as BFA says the Bayern at home last season I thought he was fantastic at keeping Robben quiet when Evra was injured, even though everyone on here thought he was going to get slaughtered from the first minute. His debut was fun too. He has never complained about getting no games , even though everyone could see Evra needed resting at various parts of the season, not sure he even made an appearence after the Bayern game.

Always had a soft spot for him for some reason, really wanted him to do well, maybe its because he looks like a pyschopath, I'm not sure. Wherever he ends up I wish him well.

14 times?

The way he was upto the games vs Bayern, I'd seen him to stay. I think he's a good player, and like Fellaini, not given enough time nor credit.
