Why do you say it's needless? Doing it a lot of times in a row and yes, it becomes needless. Tricks like that aren't needless. Threatening to move the ball when your teammates make runs around you is likely to make the defender lose notice momentarily, either of him or another player. It all has purpose.
Just compare it to Valencia on the other side doing nothing. Which one do you think is more effective?
It is needless because he does it when there's nobody within 10 yards of him normally.
Buttner was clearly told not to venture forward. His only job was punting the ball as far as he can. And he must have hit Robben's head 3-4 times. His defensive game improved tenfold though. Was expecting a complete massacre from Robben but he did very well. Did not see him stick his foot out even a single time, specially inside the box. Kept his composure as the game went on. Credit where its due.
Evra still has to start the second leg for me. If Moyes can make him stay back and make him less adventurous for one game then that's LB sorted.
Did you watch the game at all? He touched the ball as many times stopping the opposition as he did in possession himself. There were 4 or 5 times in the first half where United actually made any progress moving the ball forward. He's the only one that was bad at it? No. Everyone where. He didn't make any mistakes defensively. That's all that matters.
Instead of pointing solely to stats, how about you make 2 or 3 examples of his passing where he did poorly. I can't really remember anything from him but I can name you an instance from every other player in the team bar DDG or Vidic.
have always thought he was a decent player that just needs some finishing touches. I think he could the answer to the left back situation, played well last night. Will only get better IMO if given more game time. pleased for the lad, should be given a chance.
I disagree. Any full back that is asked to contribute to attack will eventually get caught out of position at some time or another. Evra gets caught as does rafael when they are forward. I think he's a decent prospect, but only game time will tell. It is interesting to see other peoples views on players though. No way is he the answer to the leftback problem. Yesterday, his mandate was to sit back and defend. As soon as we face an opposition where he will also need to contribute to the attack, he will be shown up defensively.

I think he should be given a decnet chance before we go out and splurge another wad of cash.
There weren't plenty if you claim that there were 8 passes that missed and at least some of them were necessary to hoof. There were plenty of examples if you watched the match.
He's a backup. Won't be more here. When he's sold, and it probably will be a 'when' rather than an 'if', he'll go to a club like West Brom or back to the Eredivisie or something like that. But until then he's a decent backup to have.I disagree. Any full back that is asked to contribute to attack will eventually get caught out of position at some time or another. He looked a good defender right from the start - but he's young, and needs more experience, which he'll only get by being given games.Proved us all wrong. When he concentrates, he looks a good defender.
Yep, seems like when he's not trying to focus too much, & be too fancy in attack, he's actually decent defensively.Proved us all wrong. When he concentrates, he looks a good defender.
Can someone just clear this up for me, did he come off last night because of injury?
Yes.
Really good performance from him against one of the World's best. Had 1 iffy moment that resulted in that de Gea save but otherwise very good. Hopefully he'll recover for the away tie.
Regarding playing him over Evra in Germany, my opinion is that while he was great, one swallow doesn't make a summer.
It's still a big risk to me and there is every chance his inexperience could cost us while I think Evra should be experienced enough to know recognise his own weaknesses and play to his strengths.
I'd echo that sentiment, I was pleased with Buttner's defensive contribution but we should revert back to the more experienced Evra for Munich. It's a non debate, for me.Regarding playing him over Evra in Germany, my opinion is that while he was great, one swallow doesn't make a summer.

This post is a good example that shows that some people were not really watching. Watch the highlights again. Buttner was no where near Robben. He was marking Rafinha who overlapped wide right. Robben cut in centrally and Carrick was closer to him.
Worst defender Sir Alex ever bought. But good luck to him.
