Shinji Kagawa

I always had the hope of being a coach abroad. If I had the choice, I would probably go to Germany, in part because of the mentality, which is similar to mine. I'm also fascinated by what happens in German football.

They seem to have found a way of producing young players. Look at Borussia Dortmund. I saw them against Manchester City this season. They were fantastic. They put this incredible intensity on their opponents to break the tempo. It adds a new tactical level.

If I was not working as a coach, I think I would decide to go to South America: to Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, to see how they train young people out there. That would be my project: to understand football better.

This was as Everton manager in December 2012. However, he has spoke of his fondness for Bundesliga on other occasions also. One would think Shinji Kagawa would have been a player he already he had observed previously. Furthermore, it is rather ironic he had at his disposal a player that had succeeded in Bundesliga and performed the functions required in a top Bundesliga team yet he saw little use for him until recently, by chance, when injuries forced his hand.

Brwned said last year after Rooney & Kagawa put in a good performance together that SAF did the wrong thing by signing RvP. I thought he was generally taking the piss at the time, but looking back, he was probably right.

He did? I was saying the same thing all year and at the time of the signing and thought I was alone with that opinion as I constantly got slated for it. Even after RVP's outstanding team-carrying performance last year I would have rather seen Kagawa as I think we'd have been better off without RVP. Of course all assuming we invested the 20-25mill elsewhere.

You certainly werent the only one with reservations before the deal had even been signed. Although I have to say I tended to look at it from the perspective of what it meant for Rooney than what it meant for Kagawa at that time, though of course it is all linked.

I don't think it's as simple as that.

I think it's pretty clear that Ferguson's plan was to ship Rooney out and Summer 2012 he brought in Van Persie and Kagawa, two excellent players to replace both roles Rooney plays for us.

It's in his book that he never saw Rooney playing much into his 30's, I'm not sure he'd have agreed with that 5 year contract.

So it wasn't so much as a mistake buying Van Persie, it was a change of plan between Ferguson and Moyes.

I would love to know what Ferguson is thinking. It seems Moyes has done several things he would not agree with especially potentially isolating RVP and Kagawa in favour of keeping Rooney happy.

I just hope he is honest to the board and if so I think Moyes will be gone come the end of the season.

This. Its clear as water. If SAF would still be in charge, Rooney would be playing somewhere else right now. (probably RM for a big big fee)

Moyes on the other side....

Surely keeping Rooney is a good thing based on this season.
We'd be better with RVP who is a better striker, than Rooney. Fergie laid Rooney'd head on a plate. He wasn't daft, and Moyes went and fecked it all up by offering the useless cnut a 5yr, 300k contract...

Kagawa did make 26 appearances last season for us in all competitions, and he already had 26 appearances with us now this season. Just thought I'd put that out there.

Since this is the second time this is being brought up in a short amount of time:

Way to ignore 4 important variables:

1. Games started gives a better indicator than games played.
2. It's pointless to focus on the domestic cups, as the best players mostly are rested. The PL and CL therefore gives a better indicator.
3. Injuries on Kagawa.
4. Injuries on team mates who potentitally push Kagawa out of the starting lineup.

It's been repeated a thousand times by many different posters, but if we take these reasonable variables into account, we see that Fergie started Kagawa more than twice as often as Moyes. To top it off, Kagawa pretty much had to compete with Rooney for the AM position the whole season, because RVP never got injured. So not only did Fergie show more than twice as much trust in Kagawa in the two most important tournaments, but he also played him regardless of whether or not Rooney/RVP were match fit. And he was the first name on the teamsheet for the AM position the moment RVP or Rooney were out.

First of all, Rooney is clearly not a useless cnut. Far from it.

Second of all, if what you say happened really took place then Ferguson is the useless cnut. Beggars belief that he could have had such a concrete plan in place and not made sure that his successor followed through on it. Downright negligent really.

Might seem like a dumb question but what's the feeling towards Kagawa amongst fans at Old Trafford? United fans online seem to love him and think he will be vital to us if we keep him, and I agree with that.

But there seems to be a big difference in the levels of adoration he receives online and the lukewarm receptions he gets (just my opinion) in the stadium.

I don't frequent OT but how do you know there is a lukewarm response if you're having to ask the question?

Neither do I, it's just the impression I get while watching the matches on TV. Obviously I'm not able to pick up everything the crowd does from that position but that's why I'm putting the question out there to match-going fans.

Didn't know we had this chant for him! :D

His first name’s Shinji, Shinji, Shinji;

His second name’s Kagawa, Kagawa, Kagawa
He’s Carrick midfield partner, partner, partner;
His grandad bombed Pearl Harbour, Pearl Harbour, Pearl Harbour

It breaks Klopp's heart to see Shinji playing out wide on the left. That's what he said last year. He's coming here to rectify the problem

Disclaimer: Disregard me. I'm in full muppet mode.

As happy as I'm to see him stay I'm equally bewildered as to why he isn't considering his options. May be he knows something about Klopp that we don't yet!

If that tweet is true, then I say that strengthens the "theory" that Klopp is our next coach.

I see no reason for Kagawa to stay if Dortmund comes knocking, unless our new coach happens to be Klopp.

Honigstein also said there was almost zero chance of Klopp joining United. Can't have it both waya.

Hmmm... Maybe he's too proud to go back? Maybe money is the issue? As things stand now, Dortmund would be a big step up.

It could also be that he believes in himself and our club. In which case, I salute him.

Maybe Kagawa does not want to accept failure or the PL/United really is his dream. A new coach means a new chance for him to grab a spot. On the other hand even if he is open to leaving a new coach might want to evaluate his squad first before selling any players.

Addtionally Honigstein is really a very unreliable source. I think he's one of those guys who quite often sells specualtion as facts/confirmed rumours to keep his name in the press.

For example the story he posted today smells like pure bullshit to me.

First of all it's completely risk free for Honigstein, because if Kagawa stays then he was "right" and even if Shinji leaves he can just say that the new coach didn't value him so he changed his mind.
And then there is the timing... It just so happens that he learned about Dortmund's intend a couple of hours after the whole moyes thing was leaked and for some reason he immediately got a 'statement' from Kagawa regarding his future.. guess Kagawa read it on twitter and first thing he did was call someone from the press or someone from the club (who then leaked it) to make some definite statement about his future, possibly without even knowing who is going to be the new coach?!

He was probably open to a move until recently, and especially now as Moyes is leaving. Good news though, exactly the type of player we need to move forward, just we need to put more trust in him as he's one of the most talented players in the squad.

Weren't you the one who abused pretty much everyone who suggested Mourinho and said Moyes will be perfect fit for the team? I hope you don't feel too bad, none of us would have predicted this sort of disaster at that time.

I don't want Mourinho anywhere near the team. My choice was always Laurent Blanc.

Kagawa needs to get on the phone to Klopp asap like De Gae worked his magic with Mata.
