I'm really not convinced Van Gaal is going to be good for us but I genuinely can't think of any better candidates who'll be available.
Why not sure?
He's a quality coach with a proven track record.

You just named one. Let's get Mick in.He's also a coach with a fair few disastrous seasons under his belt. My abiding memory of him is looking inept as Mick McCarthy led Ireland to the WC over his Netherlands side. That's the sort of thing that puts you off a manager. Plus if anything he's further past his best at this stage.
Beyond that, his abrasive manner brings the potential for disaster. Big risk for someone who isn't really top class anymore.
Still, like I said, I can't think of anyone better. Very few top managers around.

I wonder if some of those Bayern players will be unhappy about his style of play after this. Come to United Kroos and anyone else you want to bring with you.Anyone feel that Pep will be available if Bayern are knocked out of CL?

Would Guardiola's cum-shy tactics really fly with the fans here?
Depends if we buy him Messi or not.

It was an Irish team that held it own against Portugal and only lost to Spain on pens in the finals. Back then Ireland were a hell of a lot better. Also he was really unlucky with injuries for the 2-2 draw between the sides in Holland. He was missing around 8 players if memory serves me correctly.
What a day that was, eh? I have visions of us 1-0 down at home to Stoke with Louis throwing on his 6th centre-forward to see if will make a difference. In fairness though, Sully, you might as well peg McAteer as one of the greats as write Louis off based on that slightly mental day. Abrasion tends to dilute a little with age. Besides, a little abrasion would go a long way in our squad at the moment. I find him interesting.
True but I also seem to recall him making stupid mistakes during the game in Landsdowne Road, playing people out of position and such. My vague recollection is of watching the game and thinking he was making things worse with his substitutions.

I think LvG would be fine keeping Giggs on. It's just the whole bunch I assume he isn't too pleased with taking. Rightly so, in my opinion.

The Sun have it that Van Gaal will make RvP captain. If true it seems an odd move. Good player, but not really a captain.
EDIT: Plus it will likely upset Rooney.
RVP is an obvious choice. He is the captain of the Dutch side, a very professional player and has good relations with LVG. LVG said that the captain is very important for him and for that reason he chooses it himself (don't leave the decision to players) and give to him a lot of responsabilities. The Sun have it that Van Gaal will make RvP captain. Being a phenomenal player doesn't make you a phenomenal coach, though. I agree with @SirFergie that a lesser role could work, but I don't think it should be some sort of prerequisite.I think he'd be very happy to keep Scholes. He seems to be (rightly) highly regarded in world football and only a fool would ignore him.
I think he won't give it to either. Will probably choose Evra if he hopefully stays or Carrick. That's just my feeling based on nothing!
Hmm seeing the doubts swirling around Van Gaal's candidature I'm surprised that Simeone's name hasn't been thrown about frequently by the media. He is a major improvement on some of Louis' perceived flaws. He's very young which could lead to a long term appointment, plays a functional counter-attacking 4-4-2 with pace, tenacity, power and emphasis on width, has a tremendous winning record - leading La Liga and in CL semi-finals on a negative budget - imagine what he'd do with the rumoured 150m warchest, could bring along Koke and Oliver Torres, has great strength of character - his players give 110 % for him like ours did for Fergie and is flavour of the season. Seems tailor made for us. Well apart from his inability to speak English. But it's a relatively easy language to grasp and he could easily pick up rudimentary training lingo over the summer hiatus. What gives ?![]()
The Mail were reporting that Rooney has doubts about Van Gaal and he would rather Giggs get the job.
He drilled his brother's missus. I don't think he's given to sentimentality.I don't doubt it to be honest.
Been one of Rooney's biggest supporters over the past year but definitely need to knock him off his pedestal to a certain extent.
I would worry about Giggs' ruthlessness over players he's friends with. I bet the first thing he'd do if appointed would give Rio a contract extension for example.
United will now come under pressure to appoint Holland coach Van Gaal before his World Cup commitments begin in earnest with a training camp on May 7.
No. Just Van Gaal's preference as he wants to focus on the national team.From the article posted in the Rooney thread;
Does this mean if there's any chance of him being the new manager then it has to be done before the 7th?
