Bundesliga 13/14

I'd certainly replace Mkhitaryan with Firmino if given the chance. Don't rate Mkhitaryan that much if i'm honest.

I wouldn´t. With good reason. Mkhitaryan is in terms of pressing, work rate and defensive abilities in a completely different league in comparision to Firmino. For all the fire power and flair he brings on the table, there is a reason why Hoffenheim is so poor defensively. The only one, who I could see working in Klopp´s system would be Volland.

Offensive abilities are only one part of being an offensive midfielder under Klopp. That was proven with Perisic. Even a player like Reus needed to adapt to the way we play and what Klopp demands from his players.

You could well be right. Can't say I've seen all that much of Mkhitaryan but when I have he's always disappointed me. As for defensive duties, you'll find that Firmino trumps Mkhitaryan in tackles per game. That's one area of Firmino's game that I've always been impressed with, he tackles very well. I rate his pressing game too, he certainly is not lazy. Bit too easy to say he's defensively crap being part of Hoffenheim tbh.

Also, you name Volland yet he's actually pretty poor at his defensive duties, got a much lower tackles per game, fouls more. Barely intercepts the ball. Think you have it the wrong way round! :p

Oh, he isn´t, but he is clearly weaker in that regard than Mkhitaryan, at least for the purposes of Klopp. Averaging more tackles per game means very little, because first it ignores the approach of the opposing team, which is vastly different and second the focus of Dortmund´s pressing system. Our system is not focused on tackling. This can be easily seen by looking at Kevin Großkreutz, who averages just as much tackles per game as Firmino this season despite playing the majority of it as RB. This tells pretty much the whole story.

Our pressing system is based on movement, both in sheer quantity and purpose. Its about closing down oppenents, swarming them, limiting space to pass and run and ultimately forcing errors. The primary pressing player does very often not get a benefit of it in terms of stats, but the one who capitalizes (in the case of the CAM the CM/DM most of the time) on the errors.

Also, you name Volland yet he's actually pretty poor at his defensive duties, got a much lower tackles per game, fouls more. Barely intercepts the ball. Think you have it the wrong way round! :p

No. I just take their respective roles into account. Firmino played the whole season for Hoffenheim pretty much exclusively as CAM, while Volland is a wide player, who can also play as CF.

As a CAM in Klopp´s system the defensive duties are focused on positioning and anticipation, both areas in which Mkhitaryan is the best on his position in the era Klopp, even better than Kagawa, who was already stellar in that regard.

The wide players´defensive duties are easily named: backtracking. A lot. Looking at that, Volland ran pretty much as much as Firmino, who I simply don´t see on the flanks.

The biggest reason why I could see Volland fitting into Dortmund more than Firmino is his body language. He just seems to be totally commited all the time. This is something that reminds me a lot of Reus in his Gladbach days. It is not about what Volland brings on the table right now defensively, it is about in what player Klopp could turn him into if he gets his hands on him. There I see simply more potential. We are scouting him for several years now because of it.

What a match day! Nice warm-up win in Berlin :D Hope Reus' injury won't hinder him playing the cup final next Saturday ...

Nürnberg, Braunschweig, and HSV result-wise as expected. Just don't get why HSV hasn't been showing any vital signs during the last games while Lasogga was injured and now where he's back, the whole team looks sharper, more focused and determined. Far from quality but at least not as shitty as in most other matches.

Can't stand Leverkusen but they still have the option to fail in CL qualification, unable to get UEFA coefficient points. Gladbach and Wolfsburg, however, should be able to survive EL for a long time and add to their (quite) limited 5-years total. Also prefer Mainz over Augsburg, well done, Tuchel & team!

The Tuchel story is perhaps the most interesting. Don't know whether I got it all but Christian Heidel, Mainz' Director of Football (and a close friend of Jürgen Klopp) seemed to be rather pissed off. Tomorrow will be a presser but Heidel disclosed already that about 4 weeks ago, Tuchel came to him and said he would not want to coach a team in season 2014/2015.

Understandably, Heidel & Mainz don't agree, and I perceived Heidel's words as if the case is not decided yet as Mainz insists that Tuchel fulfills his contract.

The Tuchel story - some believe he might go to RB Leipzig. He like Gisdol, Hermann Badstuber etc. were part of the group around Ralf Rangnick some years ago.

So Thomas Tuchel has left Mainz. They've refused to rescind his contract and he is leaving by his own choice. Their managing director Christian Heidel said he has had contact with Leverkusen and Schalke, so I guess there might be some truth to the links between him and Schalke. Someone correct me if I've got this wrong, but because of his contract with Mainz he won't be able to coach next year.

Not if the other club does not buy him out of contract.

Maybe they want an transfer fee.

Fair enough. Would be nice to see him at Schalke, he can do a great job with their squad I reckon. Question is whether they'd be willing to buy out his contract. Then again he might want to take a break for an year, although I don't see why as he is definitely going to be a coach in demand.

And Paderborn have just clinched their first ever promotion to the Bundesliga. What an achievement for them this is. This means that the play-off is going to be between Hamburg and Greuter Furth.

SC Paderborn promoted. Greuther Fürth will play HSV in the playoffs.

Edit: Ninja'd. Playing 2 games that will determine where your entire next season seems a bit stressful, but 16th place used to be automatic relegation so I guess it's basically a lifeline.

Tuchel decided - that's what he said via his agent - in fall 2013 after the draw against Hoffenheim that he'll leave Mainz. However, he waited until the away match in Stuttgart at the last January 2014 weekend to tell Mainz - right after the club had bought him his most wished-for player (Koo) for the highest ever transfer fee in Mainz' history.

What a cnut!

I don't think it will be Schalke. Tönnies said that Keller will be their coach next season so I'm pretty sure it will be Leverkusen for Tuchel or like some have said even Leipzig, which would be a major step down though. Leverkusen is looking for a new head coach and I think Tuchel would fit well into their concept.

On top of that it would also be a major dick move from Schalke to fire Keller after he finished 3rd place which is very well within Schalkes expectations for this season.

Roger Schmidt is the new manager in Leverkusen, excellent choice, imo.

Who could you see move from Salzburg to Leverkusen? (If you have watched them, that is, which seems to be the case as you seem to rate Schmidt)

Leverkusen have few players moving away themselves, like Sidney Sam.

I haven't seen too many games, but the few times I saw them in Europe they looked well organised and played wonderful attacking football, powerful and full of confidence, exactly the opposite of the shit Hyppiä made them play this season. I'm just happy that we have another young, modern manager in the league who doesn't live off his reputation as a player or has already failed at 2 other Bundesliga clubs. Everything I've read about him is promising as well and a friend of mine from Austria is praising him for quite a well now.

Maybe @Piratesoup can give a deeper insight about him and the team and potential transfer targets for Leverkusen, he's from Austria (if I'm not mistaken?) and might follow the league there more than I do.

Oh well than it's probably Leipzig for Tuchel. If it really is Leipzig it would be a disappointing choice mainly done because of monetary reasons.
It would be totally weird. There's no need to take over at Leipzig now, he could have stayed in Mainz for another season, managed them in the Europa league and gained more experience in managing a squad in 3 competitions (last time Mainz had the chance to qualify for the Europa League group stage, he failed miserably), and then take over next year, when they walked through the 2nd Bundesliga with a decent coach.

Schalke would make so much sense and they'd be stupid to keep Keller, if Tuchel is available. Yeah, it might not be fair to Keller, who has done surprisingly good, but who cares in the end. They need an exciting manager, who the players love to play for, who embodies real ambition, so that they have a chance to keep most of their young talents for at least 2-3 years and build on it.

Agree with Balu, it doesn't make sense for Tuchel to go to RB Leipzig and I certainly hope he doesn't. That would be such a waste of his talents.

Schalke is the perfect club for him and he will be able to gain valuable experience in the CL. Not to mention he could do a great job with all the youth talents they have. It won't be fair to Keller to sack him, but in the long term it's the better choice. Keller just can't get the maximum out of their squad, which in my opinion could be much, much better. Hope Schalke hire him.

I hope so too but I'm not seeing it tbh. Dortmund and Schalke will be able to keep up with Bayern for some time but they will probably win it with a 10-20 points gap in the end again. They improved their squad already with Lewandwoski and according to Rummenigge they are intend to adding even more quality to the squad, probably in the defensive department. As unfortunate as it is but I don't think next season will be much closer than this.

I'm staggered Tuchel has left considering how long he's been at Mainz and he's just got them into the Europa League. Bit of a pity.
Tuchel has been negotiating with Schalke to an extent that Heidel (Mainz) and Heldt (from Schalke) talked about it in February this year!

Another perfect demonstration of the value of Schalke's public commitments to Keller as their head coach ...

Don't forget there is the World Cup. But Dortmund has a lot players going to Brazil, too. The injury problems at both clubs won't get less...

It might be the time for other teams to step in or atleast get the gap smaller.

Mainz usually found somebody as new coach that nobody knew before...
A newbie PM'd me this if anyone else is interested:
Right now there aren't any obvious candidates. Tuchel has put the club into a bad spot with his decision because all succession plans were made for 2015. I can think of no established German manager who would fit our philosophy and be available in the summer, so it is likely to be a foreigner or someone with a youth coaching background. No clue who it would be if we take the foreign option. If we go for a youth coach the most likely would be Martin Schmidt, who has our B-team on course for promotion to the third division, or a former player like Sandro Schwarz (our U19 coach) or Jürgen Kramny(Stuttgart's B-team coach).

Hmm reading the article on spiegel.de makes this whole story seem even more weird. Apparently he thought about quitting towards the end of last year already but decided to finish the season?

It also looks like he himself has made no further plans so far apart from quitting his job with Mainz. Maybe a bit of a burn-out?

Not really. He negotiated with Leverkusen and Schalke at the end of 2013 joining this summer - not really the best clubs if you're suffering from a burn out. :D

Tuchel's idea of "I don't wanna coach a club in 2014/2015" came just about a month ago; he told Heidel that he wanna leave directly after the first match this year (Jan 2014; away match in Stuttgart).

Seems like a case of being burnt out, or there is just something we are not being told. Either way, I hope to see him coaching back in the league as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Drmic to Leverkusen is now official, €6m he cost them. He has signed a deal until 2019. What a steal.
