Its an abomination that inception is even on this list at all.

Inception is literally babbys first movie with a semblance of "complexity", so young peple who havent seen any movies at all think its good. Its tripe.

Acting, the script and the historical aspect are awful, really. The fighting scenes are good though.

It isn't an atrocious film, but simply not a good one and it shouldn't be anywhere near consideration for that list. And when it is compared with the likes of the Godfather and usual suspects, never mind the genre...

Now I am liking you. I wouldn't go as far as you about Insheption, but it is safe to say that it is the most overrated movie of all time (and a bit more). A solid 8 at best, but it's insanity that it goes near a top 20 list or people saying that it is the best (or one of the best) science fiction ever.

Hipster's favorite choice. The people who say that it is a complex movie, difficult to understand and has an amazing twist or a great ending are the worst kind.

Is he talking for Gladiator or for which movie?

At least Drive isnt on the list. Easily the most overrated movie post Inception (which is the most overrated ever).

I dont understand the hate for Gladiator. What other film of similar type even comes close to it? In terms of script it doesnt come close to the great dramas and thrillers of all time, but thats not the kind of movie it is. Its an epos, and with that comes a certain black and white character portrayal and a fairly predictable plot. WIthin that context the movie is great. Soundtrack is excellent, and the acting is certainly not "awful".

Inception is a 6.5 / 10. Its mediocre. It doesnt even follow the rules it sets for itself about how the different levels of dreams should interact with one another. The ending is an extremely cheap trick to increase the viewer's feeling that the movie is "deep" or "complex". Its Nolan's worst movie yet somehow most people rate it as his best.

Not sure if you are wumming about what a hipster is but hipsters are generally seen as people who dislike everything mainstream. Hipsters dont like Inception. Inception is as mainstream as it gets. Im being a hipster when I criticise inception

Nah, that's wrong. I have come on the Caf on the mission to redefine the definition of hipsters. Hipsters like everything that is mainstream and goes with the flower of the month.

I wouldn't go as far with Insheption and I have gave it an 8/10 but I agree with most of your post. It isn't deep or complex at all (unless you have watched an extremely limited amount of movies) and the ending uses the cheapest trick ever. I would put Prestige, The Dark Knight and Memento comfortably above Insheption, while also the Batman Begins is a better movie than it IMO. One of the weakest Nolan's movies.

It is a decent, enjoyable movie, but nothing more than that. And I have found a strange relation on the real life. People who love Insheption love also The Hunger Games.

Ben Hur (basically Gladiator merged the story of The Fall of The Roman Empire with the moments and developing of Ben Hur). I don't know which one I prefer most from Ben Hur and Gladiator, but they are close in my book. The only other movie of that genre than comes close to them, IMO is Braveheart.

Everything in this post is 100% wrong.

Shame Drive isnt on the list. Easily the best movie post Inception (which is the best ever).

I understand why everyone hates the Gladiator. What other film of similar type even comes close to being as bad? In terms of script it doesnt come close to the great dramas and thrillers of all time, but thats the kind of movie it wants to be. Its not an epos, and as such it shouldnt have black and white characters or such a predictable plot. Within this context the movie is poor. Soundtrack is terrible and the acting is certainly awful.

Hipster was talking about the Gladiator, yes.

I just don't think that time-kiling films (such as Gladiator or, if you were talking about it, Inception) should be in consideration for the best movie. You can watch it one time, you can even watch it again if you have enough beer and popcorn, but you won't receive any aesthetic pleasure - it's just drive.

Same for the 300 but I can't think of it without thinking about the original film (the 300 spartans) which I adored in my childhood. It wasn't a great-great film either but it was just as energetic as the new one and much more complex.

I liked Inception. Not in the "best film of all time, wow it totally blew my mind" way, but it was a great film and is imo better than all his Batman films. I'd have only Memento and The Prestige as better Nolan films and it ran Prestige pretty close.

I agree. Nolan get a lot of hate now but Memento, Prestige, Inception, BB and DK were all good films. Memento is the one that truly stands out but others were in upper tier of what you would call Hollywood blockbusters.

I also think it's a good film, I like most of Nolan's but wouldn't really know how to rate them.

I think Inception deserves being mentioned (maybe not too high in a top, but still mentioned) because as a genre, the blockbuster is always going to have plotholes and very mainstream themes; it however manages to be a very good blockbuster, it's not as stupid as people make out, the acting is pretty good (Leo especially) and I like Zimmer's score.

I don't think being a blockbuster should be an excuse for lazy writing and plotholes, just like being an arthouse film shouldn't be an excuse for it either. But I don't think it's stupid at all despite its flaws. It's basically this decades's The Matrix with significantly better acting and most likely it will age significantly better as well. Nothing wrong with having it in a top 50 that's heavily dominated by films from the last 20 years in my opinion.

They are not even close IMO. I think that The Matrix can be argued to be the best sci-fi ever, while Inception wouldn't even make a top 10 list. Also, I think that The Matrix has aged very well, I watched it about a year or two ago and was still very good. About movies of that time that haven't aged well though, watch Dark City.

Also, I think that The Matrix influence on movies (especially on the fighting, action scenes and special effects) dwarfs the influence of Inception (if it had any) on other movies. And finally, the story of The Matrix is much more deeper (and obviously better) than the story of Inception. At acting, I agree that Inception has beter acting however Keanu Reeves on The Matrix was very good, despite being an average actor, but Neo's role was very suited to him.

I always thought the influence of The Matrix on filmmaking is overrated. I don't think Dark City aged badly, it was always meant to be far off realitiy and therefore looks now as surreal as back then. It's just not that good of a film to begin with.

Im sorry but just no. Inception is no where close to the Matrix, which has already showed that its aging extraordinaly well. Matrix trumps it hard both in individual quality and filmatic influence on other films. I agree with the last sentence though, sorta, although I personally wouldnt put Inception in my top 50. Its certainly no surprise that it makes a top 50 on the caf.

I think Inception is almost like a Michael Bay movie (with better acting). Theres nothing new in it, it just takes available filmatic effects and uses them in an extremely over the top way in an attempt to wow the viewer.

Everytime I hear someone praising Matrix and dismissing the quality of Inception in such extreme manner, I can't shake the feeling that Matrix was the first film with a semblance of 'complexity' that person saw and now he/she feels overprotective by the threat of this decade's Matrix. Of course I could be totally wrong in your case ;).

There is not such a thing Balu. There is The Matrix and there are the Matrix' bad copies, you know, like Inception.

No idea. Youth wasted on the... and all that. And a degree in film study seems utterly pointless.

We'll do another Top 100. The great thing about the last one was it prompted us to watch a shedload of classics before the deadline.

I hope he doesn't invite every cnut on this site. If he does we'll have to boycott it.
