I like Interview with the Vampire, it's a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, but ranking it so high??

Well, that film is probably my number one "personal" choice. I know it's not universally acclaimed, but it is very well written, very strongly acted by huge stars, and the whole atmosphere of the film is just brutal. It is also probably the first film to portray vampires as full-fledged personalities instead of one-dimensional monsters.

Are you serious? Or you are just looking for something negative to say? I can accept that 300 is cheesy and all, but you can't accept Gravity? I would like to see both your list as well as Parisian Rooney's one.
Gravity lacks something that's pretty important for a great film. A story. It was kinda pretty though.

Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) - 1 - 15 Points
North by Northwest (1959) - 2 - 14 Points
Rashomon (1950) - 3 - 13 Points
The Third Man (1949) - 4 - 12 Points
Metropolis (1927) - 5 - 11 Points
Once upon a time in America (1984) - 6 - 10 Points
Godfather (1972) - 7 - 9 Points
Life is beautiful (1997) - 8 - 8 Points
Night on Earth (1991) - 9 - 7 Points
Mulholland Drive (2001) - 10 - 6 Points
The Lives of Others (2006) - 11 - 5 Points
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) - 12 - 4 Points
The Usual Suspects (1995) - 13 - 3 Points
In the Heat of the Night (1967) - 14 - 2 Points
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) - 15 - 1 Point
Dancer in the Dark (2000) - 16 - 1 Point
Amélie (2001) - 17 - 1 Point
Casablanca (1942) - 18 - 1 Point
Heaven (2002) - 19 - 1 Point
The Jungle Book (1967) - 20 - 1 Point

Am I the only one who believes that Rashomon is Kurosawa's true masterpiece? Seven Samurai could have made the list as well, but I didn't want to pick more than one movie from the same director. Sergio Leone is the only exception, it just looked so very very wrong without one of his Western films and Once upon in America is his best work in my opinion.

Metropolis and The Lives of Others are the two standout German movies in my opinion. The Tin Drum and Aguirre, the Wrath of God deserve to be mentioned as well.

I wouldn't call that list my top 20 of all time though. If I wanted to do that, I probably had to make lists for most influential, most emotional, most entertaining and a few more categories. Then take the top 10 of all of them, add a few personal favourites, randomise it all and look at the result, just to be annoyed by it and change a few things again. Maybe, maybe it'll lead to a half decent list. I'm 100% sure that Gravity wouldn't be in it though, while Interview with a Vampire actually might make my top 20 of most entertaining films of all time. I loved that film, watched it twice in the cinema back then.

A list like this might have worked if we limited the scope. If we had a best films of the 90s or the best films of the 00s list we would probably end with a much better list

Acting, the script and the historical aspect are awful, really. The fighting scenes are good though.

It isn't an atrocious film, but simply not a good one and it shouldn't be anywhere near consideration for that list. And when it is compared with the likes of the Godfather and usual suspects, never mind the genre...
Gladiator fits in this list though. It's blokey, it's epic, a bit emotionally manipulative. I wasn't the least bit surprised to see it appear.

This is the list from 2007. Didn't realize back then how much De Niro and Scrosese were in the top 10. even with all the committees and months of discussions i dont know how stuff like usual suspects, shawshank, casino and fight club made it so high.

At least we have the Godfather films in the right order this time.

What?! You guys seriously need to stop watching small budget films from East Timor or something.
Personally, I would have troubles to put a list of 10 comedians (including movie/TV show actors) who are worthy to be fair. In fact my list would probably be:
1. Jim Carrey. That's it.

By far my least favorite genre, so on that top 50 I won't put lists. 1 done, 49 to go on my non-nerdish list.

I guess Louis CK would win a comedian one. I'd be curious to see what standing Gervais would have, there's a lot of hate for him on the Caf I think.

...

Regarding the De Niro/Scorsese top heaviness one tends to see in these types of lists: it's due to the male-dominated act of 'ranking' things.

For example, the IMDB voter male/female breakdown is something like 7:1 (Hearsay, tbf. I never checked it.)

Standup comedy is boring as feck, Doug Stanhope is the only worthwhile one.
You, sir, are nuts if you don't like Louis CK, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Pablo Francisco, Dave Chappelle etc...

I can spend entire evenings watching comedy shows on youtube.

No Usual Suspects and Shawshank yet you lot are going on like it's the ultimate list.

They were simpler times. Children respected their elders, we could leave our doors unlocked without fear of getting robbed and Spoony still wore tight jumpers.

We should do the opposite lists as well. Like the 50 worst movies of all time, etc.
You could be onto something, but the way things are going round here the last few days 300 would win it easy just as a bit of a joke.

That seems a bit pointless, but we could make a list of the 20 worst movies that have an imdb ranking above 7.5. That should be fun and lead to great moaning and flaming. 300 and Gladiator would be early favourites from what I've read here so far.

Hehe not bad. But I worry that a lot of it would be wumming and not what you actually think were bad films.

 Ok well that's one I missed (as did @mehro himself when posting it) but still no shawshank :wenger:
What's so special about Shawshank? I really don't get. I haven't heard a single reason why it's best of all time material. That film got a very strange hype in the middle of the last decade, where all of a sudden everyone seemed to call it a masterpiece, but despite having a few flaws (some of the guards are almost cartoon villains and look out of place in the film) and doing nothing exceptionally well, it's all of a sudden regularly called a top 5 film of all time. It seems like Morgen Freeman's narration has fried the brains of a whole generation of moviegoers (well not really moviegoers, more home cinema watchers, barely anyone saw it in the cinemas back then). Now, don't get me wrong, it's of course a great film. It just looks so out of place to me in a discussion about the greatest films ever.
