Rafael is probably my favourite player at the club, but Valencia would make for a better right wing back. He's quicker, stronger and performs well when he isn't the sole source of creativity out on the right flank. He seems to find attacking a lot easier when at right back as he isn't faced with the defender 1 vs 1, therefore he can overlap.

I wouldn't really want to see a 532, but if that were to happen, Valencia's future at the club looks a lot more rosy.

Valencia is also a liability at right back and has a worse disciple record than Rafael when playing on the wing, I dread to think what it would be after a season as wing back.

The position doesn't require as much defending as it would at natural right back. It requires a massive engine and high fitness levels above all else. The defensive side is manageable, and certainly not beyond his capabilities.

Do you propose 3 centre backs or two centre backs and a defensive midfielder.

I'd be quite happy with a Jones-Smalling-Evans trio, so three defenders. I don't want to see a 532, though. But if it were to happen I think it could be manageable provided the midfield was sorted out.

So we need to have at least 5 CB's to cover for injuries and the like. A couple of injuries at a time and we would be in trouble. Considering all three of them being all out together various times this season it doesn't fill me with confidence or seem like a sensible system, more like an idealistic one.

If that article has any truth in it whatsoever, it talks about a 5-3-2 when defending and a 3-4-3 when in possession. I wonder if Carrick and/or Fletcher could also be utilised as one of the centre backs in such a formation. Surely they would be required to be good with the ball at their feet for that to work and a bit less emphasis on the defensive abilities

van Gaal will have a plan A,B and C.

Hypothetically we bring in the likes of a new decent Cb,Shaw at lb,Strootman/Carvalho dm,one or two of these fellas in a creative central mid role<s> Cesc,Rakitic,Gundogan,Barkley while adding a wide flair player like Reus,Greizman,Pedro,im completely confident we will be back up challenging.

What is so refreshing, and may be instilling a cathartic effect among supporters,is the new boss, although he hasnt really taken charge yet,hes a proper figurehead who will roll with the changes happening in modern football and try to adapt his team to forge winners. The little snippets of his comments from the article are so concise and classy they cant help but inspire confidence, unlike last year where the doom could practically be tasted.

Cant wait until he takes charge day to day.

Is there ANYTHING to suggest we're in for Strootman? Either now or last window...

I'm not sure you could say anything concrete, but the Dutch journalist who Richard Keys revealed informed him that we were in talks with van Gaal a little while before the story broke, thinks he's a certain target (link below). I have to say that I can't stand Keys but he was right on that one and this guy was evidently his source.

Of all the names that we've been linked with since van Gaal took over, I think Strootman is the most likely target. He seems a big fan. I think it would be a good signing.

Theres an air about LVG and the return of the real monster that is Manchester United, Im pretty excited for pre-season let alone the actual season.

Who remembers Moyes "2 week holiday" when that happened we all knew we were in for a ride.

Ill make a bold prediction but I think our Pre-season frendlies will have as much media attention as the start of the season. Everyone will be watching like hawks. Ill be waiting for the inevitable....

"Van Gaals solid start lacks flair as they struggled through a 2-0 win over AC Milan" and

"After 2 games in charge LVG has the same win record as Moyes and United board consider pulling plug".

and if that wasnt bad enough just wait for the anti-united brigade to pipe up.

From daily mail -

Speaking for the first time about turning down the job now occupied by Mauricio Pochettino, Van Gaal said: ‘It was very close. Very close. As a little boy I was a fan of Tottenham Hotspur with the team of Jimmy Greaves when he was the champion. Jimmy Greaves was my idol. They had fantastic white shirts. So I was very close.’

Van Gaal was at the Dutch team’s hotel in Santpoort-Noord, on the outskirts of Amsterdam, ahead of a friendly with Wales on Wednesday night that was expected to provide a robust test for Holand before they fly out to Brazil on Thursday.

But the withdrawal of both Gareth Bale through injury and the absence of Aaron Ramsey for recuperation has left Van Gaal feeling ‘disappointed’. He questioned whether the players’ omission could be described as ‘holidays’.

‘I have said to my board that they have to insist on playing against Bale and Ramsey,’ said Van Gaal of the fixture scheduling. ‘But this can happen in football. I don't know why, whether it is injury or holidays.

‘When it is a holiday I am a little bit disappointed. But I can understand it because Bale has had a difficult but also impressive season under his belt.

‘It is better that we have the best team of Wales because we need resistance. I think Wales without these players are weaker.’

Van Gaal will not utter a word directly about United until after the World Cup – ‘I have said to the CEO of Manchester United Ed Woodward that I only speak about the Dutch national team’ – but he did open up about his management style and said it was important his team liked him.

He has been painted as a unshakeable authoritarian since his appointment but showed a personable side on Monday when asked if it mattered what players thought.

‘I think it is very important,’ he said. ‘I am a coach who wants a good relationship with my players and I do everything to reach that level.

But he added: ‘Sometimes it is not reachable as the players are not open-minded and don’t adapt to the norms that I put in the team. When you are not listening, always out, or I go out.’

Which means, either he gets rid of the bad apples and has the support of the club in doing so. If not, he leaves because his position has been compromised.

Thank you for clearing that up ;)

You wouldn't see Guardiola, Mourinho or Ancelotti go to Spurs would you... Bit of a low ambition job.

He's always said that he was going to retire after the WC unless he got a job in England. He'd managed in the other big leagues and had a desire to manage in England. Spurs was the only job available before we came along, he would have been lucky to have a club like Spurs available just as he finished a job with Holland; he was then very fortunate to have the United job become available too.

I don't see how wanting to manage in a different country reflects badly on him, at the time it was either Spurs or retire and he clearly still has a desire to manage which can only be a good thing imo.

Doesn't reflect well on him that he almost went to Spurs ffs.
Spurs are hardly an embarrasing club.

As soon as we became available he rightly chose us. What is wrong with that? Nothing.

He took over AZ in his own country, I have no idea how they're regarded in relation to Ajax, PSV & Feyenoord but possibly similar to how Spurs are here in relation to the top 4? It didn't seem to reflect too badly on him after he'd finished.

Sorry I just don't think a world class manager should be joining Spurs, a club with very limited ambition.

Spurs are light years ahead of AZ in terms of attractiveness for managers. Every manager would rather be training Spurs than AZ.

Yeah, but that would've been his choice. Him deciding to go there wouldn't stop him from being a world class manager, depending on your opinion as to whether he is or not.

That's what I was getting at, he took that job and it didn't reflect badly on him so why would taking the Spurs job reflect badly on him?

I'm going to abandon this thread before it gets sticky...

Not getting at you or anything, just don't think the fact he nearly went to Spurs is something we need to worry about too much.

You wouldn't see them going to Spurs because they're opportunists, esp Mourinho and Guardiola. If anything, Van Gaal deserves some respect for that. That or taking AZ and making them a side to be reckoned with in Holland, with a title and 2nd and 3rd place on top of that.

He also introduced some interesting players that were to knock on the NT team's door while he was there. Actually, it makes him a complete manager as not only can he manage top dogs but also get good results with so-so sides or limited resources.

I think you are overrating how easy it is for managers to be that picky. LVG has a track-record of falling out with the board/owners when they try to influence his teams in a manner he doesn't like. So Milan/PSG/Chelsea/RM/Bayern/Barcelona/Monaco/City are out of the equation for him per default. That leaves him with Arsenal/Dortmund/Juventus which are already occupied long-term and then United/Spurs.

Spurs was a brilliant option for him if he was promised to manage them his way, United are beyond a dream for LVG, and hopefully for us.

Yes yes I get it, everyone disagrees with me. It's fine, I'm off to cry in a corner.

Spurs are a lot of things, but I wouldn't say that they lack ambition. They have a short fuse on how long they give a manager. They wouldn't have stuck with Moyes for as long as we did for example.

Strange that people are jumping on his back for almost joining Spurs.

Apart from the fact that he liked the white shirt a boy, which other PL club would've been a better choice?

Mourinho, Wenger, Rodgers and Pellegrini were all secure. Moyes seemingly unsackable when the Tottenham rumours started, so what other option did he have?

He rightly chose us when the job became available, what more could we ask for?
