Malaysian Plane crashes over the Ukraine | 17th July 2014

Do we know if the crash site is in territory controlled by the Ukrainian military or territory controlled by Russian separatists? In other words, do Ukrainian officials have full access to the crash site?

It's on the Russian side afaik, that's what the media are reporting (i.e. on the rebel side).

Whoever controls it will have ample opportunity to doctor the scene if they want to.

That's what I was thinking. I would have more confidence if the Ukrainians were in control of the wreckage, though.

Do we know who is dealing with the crash site? Surely the separatists don't have the expertise/resources to deal with things on the ground properly?

Apparently it's on the separatists territory and they're blocking the Ukrainians from getting there. They promise ( ) to send the FDR to Russia. Laughable shit really.

DONETSK, June 29, /ITAR-TASS/. Self-defence forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic have taken control over a missile defence army unit equipped with Buk missile defence systems, the press service of the Donetsk People’s Republic told Itar-Tass on Sunday.

Looks like the separatists do have these kind of weapons despite them now saying they don´t

Don't think this has been posted yet.

Here's the archived page after it was deleted.

Full translation: "In the vicinity of Torez, we just downed a plane, an AN-26. It is lying somewhere in the Progress Mine. We have issued warnings not to fly in our airspace. We have video confirming. The bird fell on a waste heap. Residential areas were not hit. Civilians were not injured." '

There's something distasteful about seeing pics of Ukrainians in vests clambering all over the wreckage.

Dutch/Malaysian officials should be demanding access for their own investigators on the site.

Good luck with that, when plane with our president crashed it took fecking ages to get anything from this scum and we still didn't get plane's wreckage. It's mostly down to ineptitude of our government though, hope that the Dutch or Malaysian can do something about it, although once it goes through Kreml's dirty hands, it's worthless.

CNN reporting Ukraine believes it was a Russian BUK system (SA 11 or 17) that took the plane down. According to them Russian separatists boasted about capturing a BUK system a few weeks back.

Gotta feel for the families who are just learning their loved ones are gone.

Wow what a tragic waste of life :(

I know its an international flight corridor and also that nobody has a right to shoot down civilian aircraft, but if there were already 2 aircraft shot down in the vicinity, was it prudent for civilian aircraft to still fly over the area?

I know one thing for sure, I'm not flying with Malaysian Airline any time soon... 60% chance you'll land safely for feck sake. RIP.
What? Where are you getting that 60% number from?

I am starting to think that I will be requesting a change of name fairly soon as I will be heading home...Whoever is behind this outrage, it is pitiful that two very-closely linked countries are now at each others' throats, and, beyond that, Russia and the EU are at loggerheads over basically an indistinct border while much more fundamental problems are lurking (the long-term economic challenge of Asia and, more immediately, British Muslims returning from Syria for example). 100 years later, Europe is once again demonstrating its capacity to self-destruct.

Apparently separatists tweeted about shooting it down as it happened before swiftly deleting. Unfortunately for them, once on the internet...

Remember the Fox News love-in for Putin not long ago? All those manly shirtless pics they were all swooning over. Why can't Obama be more like him?
