If you think Nick powell is on 5k a week, you are mistaken.
No, he is on a 5k week. Or something like that, maybe 5k plus bonuses. He was signed from Crewe where he's got way short of 1k a week, so it was a substantial raise for him.
What sort of salary you think Powell is on anyway? Like 20K?

Amos isn't good enough but those comments are harsh. No need to kill the guy in his press conference, just sell him and be done.

“I think we didn’t play a good match,” Van Gaal said. “I don’t know if it was because of the height [altitude] of stadium, or the air, but all of my passers failed today. It wasn’t normal.

“When you see [Juan] Mata or [Ander] Herrera, and [Shinji] Kagawa, who are the best passers and everything goes wrong, it is the air, I believe.

“It was the height and the air, the ball was bobbling all the time. But we scored remarkable, fantastic goals and were able to keep the ball in possession in the second half.

“We are not used to this hot weather. When the World Cup was here in 1994 and games were played at noon, it was not very nice.

“America has a top sport climate, but you have to play football at the right time.

”You had 55,000 people watching us, but we could have performed much better. It was the height and the heat that affected us.”

Van Gaal added, “When you are 3-0 ahead, you just have to keep the ball as opponent has to run and run. It is very difficult, with this hot weather, to do that. We forgot to do that and we allowed Rome back into the game.I am pleased we have won, but it was not good.”

So is LVG saying that Rooney's assist to Mata would have been a mishit under normal circumstances? :)

"Some of our passes failed, the ball was bobbling all the time and we didn’t create so much, but we scored three fantastic goals," he added.

"The pass from Rooney to Mata was unbelievable, despite the heat and the height. Mata was running with his brain at the right moment.

"They also scored one fantastic goal, so then it was 3-1. But the penalty was not right: you cannot award a penalty when a shot hits your hand or arm from two metres away."

Looks like Louie starting to see that despite mind blowing result against L.A. this team has a lot to work on and in some places would be better and safer to have some world class additions... hopefully.

Still we can expect even up to three more departures. Some players may not fit into new system and it shouldn't be a surprise to be honest, especially 2nd team today showed some lack of ambition and precision despite the win.

"There is no Manchester United player who is fit," the manager declared. "Maybe the boys who have trained already before the tour, the ones who started on 7 July, are a little more fit.

"But the World Cup players are not fit. They have only had four days of training sessions, in the heat. So you cannot say they are fit.

"I have a lot of players who can play in the strikers’ positions. I have already said that our selection is not in balance. I can put six strikers in.

"So maybe next time I will put Zaha in because he is working hard. He is doing all the things I require or demand, so there is no problem."

We were 3-0 up and comfortable against a good Roma side who had already been playing against better oppo than we have. A freak keeper lapse and a soft penalty put paid to that but it shouldn't detract from the fact that we were playing ok, and still comfortable against a good side.

True but Louie didn't hesitate to gave his honest opinion even after a friendly. I just hope he's not seeing us as already 'good to go' because we clearly are before the most important football tests. I'm sure he'll be very careful with optimism with his knowledge and experience.

No doubt he should demand more, we are capable of it and I am sure he is guarded against such optimism, but as a fan looking at the game in that context, it is extremely pleasing to know that there is more to come from this set of players.

Not sure I like the comments on Amos.

Not needed IMO. Maybe needed if it was a player with a future at the club. It would be a good kick up the ass

But Amos has no future at utd. It will only serve to knock his confidence

My local team Blackpool has a wage cap of 10k a week and I bet we couldn't afford a player like Powell. He will be on more I bet.

Nothing wrong with seeing if a player can handle just criticism, if he can take it, he might keep it. Just like LVG dropped RVP but due to the way he reacted eventually made him captain.

No, he's right. Nick Powell is on just under 5k/wk. Google it, it's pretty widely known.

It's actually marginally less than 5k/wk.

quicker than Usain Bolt eh!

Actually I think his quotes have been mistranscribed. The Guardian have him saying: 'I am nearly 63 years old and I run when the ball is flying four seconds, fifty metres.' As in, when the ball is in the air for four seconds, travelling fifty metres, I run to try and save it. Implying that Amos didn't react quickly or vigorously enough to get back and save the effort.

Which is a fair interpretation from what I could see. Even as far out as he was, he would have been able to get back if he'd not stood there gawping for two seconds before moving.

Anybody else noticed this.......

I'm very happy with his very direct and honest approach and he needs to be with only just over 4 weeks to our first game of the season. One thing's for sure, on the 16th of August we can't have our back 3 running into each other and blocking each others way or not capable of playing an opponent off side. The back 3 will be the difference between us succeeding or failing next season.

I think there's a line between criticising a player by saying "he should have done better there" rather than embarrassing the lad. Plus, it's a friendly, he hasn't cost us an important match.

Dropping a player is also very different to cynical public criticism.

Don't think anyone could disagree with that. And Carrick but he hasn't seen him yet.

heh, some pretty brutal comments.

It's the opposite of Fergie, who went out of his way to ensure he never laid any blame on individuals in the media and instead gave them bollockings in private. Be interesting to see how they take to it.

Not all the time. He openly blamed Nani when Chelsea knocked us out of the capital one cup.

He is very straightforward and doesn't mince words. The comments on Amos are bit harsh but while he said our performance wasn't up to the desired standards (which they weren't), he attributed it more to heat, altitude and ball wobbling a bit than players being sloppy.

I doubt a lot of the players are thinking about Fergie. They are probably just counting their blessings that they don't have to deal with Round, Moyes and Lumsden.

The comments aren't for Amos, who as you say is likely to leave. They're for the other players, showing that he won't tolerate rubbish.

For sure. Although funnily enough a lot of what Moyes said was similar to Fergie (we were the better team, should've won, played well etc), it's just that when Fergie said it you knew he was just covering for the media, where as with Moyes it sounded more like the whimpers of a desperate man.

But anyway, moving on and all that, it's going to be a funny season of quotes in comparison!

There is always going to be issue's with this altitude and climate. When we (Ireland) played there in 94, the boys suffered immensely. Who could forget the Charlton/Aldridge incident.

One thing that stands out to me so far is his continuous references to the lack of balance. He will undoubtedly sign a cluster quite soon. Regardless of what he says about United as a club, you have to feel that his reputation and history in the game is key. He will not allow how last days overshadow his glittering career.
