Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

Never said anything about disciplined holding midfielder, he was always an aggressive player, but he was never unaware of his tactical instructions and was always an immense player when it comes to tackling. I don't understand why everybody thinks we need a pure defensive minded player who's only job is it to destroy and take the tempo out of the game, I don't think we need such one and I think a player such as that is way too restricted for Van Gaal.
He played in a two-man midfield with Rolfes most of the time yeah, but they had shared defensive responsibility, he played as a full-back a few times too, even as attacking wide player, very versatile.
Maybe I misunderstood your post then, I agree with all that. I just don't agree with what you wrote above, that he played as a defensive midfielder throughout his time at Leverkusen and developed into a box to box midfielder at Juventus. That's simply not true.

Quickly gone from "world record bids" to Vidal gone and us looking at 3 young CB's and a dodgy #10 filled midfield

Wasn't what I meant, sorry. My main point was that he's always been more of a defensive minded than attacking minded player, that's blurred now, because he's just very much the allrounder nowadays. He played in a two-man-midfield, yeah. The attacking attributes he has now, however, weren't always as good as now and he hasn't always been the complete player he is now. I wouldn't worry about the defensive aspect, when having Vidal in midfield.

Newest Ducker tour diary is quite fascinating.

  • He took some of the United staff and ambassadors to dinner where he ended up having an intense tactical discussion with Bryan Robson about the 3-4-1-2 formation using wine glasses to illustrate  He says the system's success will depend on the players' abilities to understand and implement his methods, hence his comments about training their brains.
  • When LVG was the Barca coach in 1999, he outlined his philosophy of a high defence in great detail, saying that the tactic required 'disciplined, devoted and intelligent players'. He complained that the Catalan players he inherited were too dim to understand what he wanted, hence why he habitually recruited Dutchmen, at which point the PR lady intervened to change the subject. Ducker wonders how the English players at United will cope, but also says LVG has so far been encouraged by what he has seen from the United squad.
  • Ibrahimovic described LVG as "a dictator with no sense of humour". But United staff, while conscious of how serious he can be, have also seen his softer side during the tour and have often ended up in stitches when his dry humour presents itself, often after a glass of wine (red, preferably).
  • United’s entire training session at the Sports Authority Field in Denver was open to the media. But his penalty instructions to Rooney was picked up by microphone and published in English paper websites so he requested that the media could only film the first 15 minutes of yesterday’s session. Until then, LVG had been very open and relaxed with the media.
  • LVG is dismayed at how much stuff the players have to be involved in during the tour, but can't do anything about it since Giggs signed it off when he was interim manager. Next summer with van Gaal giving input will most likely be less taxing. United have been committed to 100 engagements in total over the course two weeks during this tour. Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Javier Hernandez with Kei Nishikori, Tomas Berdych and Jamie Murray, the professional tennis players. Ashley Young, Jesse Lingard and the Keane brothers visiting the local ultimate Frisbee team. Aon has 25 United related engagements involving 1,700 of their most valuable clients. Aon, like Chevrolet, the club’s new shirt sponsor, is keen for United to return to Asia, a market they are keen to expand in, although the companies appreciate that Van Gaal has the final say on these matters.

What's more worrying for me is that it implies some kind of constraint - he's play 3-5-2 because he's not confident of the club signing the players required for 4-3-3.
I think it's for the same reason het put the player in the Holiday Inn and he took a few of his staff with him: He's in a hurry, he hasn't got the time to have only one training a day or to develop a good working relationship with new members of staff. He wants to play a new style of football that demands a lot from the players, so he has to learn them a lot and there a only so many hours in a day that players can be training without overstressing themselves physically.

At Bayern he had a few months to get it all working smoothly, because Bayern had a surplus of quality anyway, so there wouldn't be that many points lost while work progressed. In het PL that's different, it's much easier to loose so many points that the league title is out of sight by november. With the Dutch national team he worked remarkably quick, but he had a tactical tradition to build on. He's trying to save time everywhere he can, and with new wingers he will not have enough time anyway.

Besides that, the kind of wingers he wants are scarce anyway, and will take time to buy. He will not have time to learn them enough. My guess is he will use the absence of European matches to train on 4-3-3 during the season and switch to it during matches from time to time, and make the full transition next summer preparation.

Nice touch taking the ambassadors and staff out to dinner.

People always comment that the foreign coaches wouldn't "get" United's history but from what I've seen so far LVG is doing his best to immerse himself in every department at the club.

It is slightly worrying though that he downed 11 glasses of wine to illustrate his formation.

The players van Gaal really wants are not available... - and the question is if others that are on the market are really a big improvement to that what United already has (especially if you look what they cost)

Bayern end of season 2008/09 did not have a surplus on quality. Or it was not the "quality" everybody predicted prior to the season that ran the show. Ribery did not have a good season and the "quality strikers" Bayern had did not match into van Gaal's plans. A lot hoof ball. Passing quotes around 75 % - that was Bayern the season before van Gaal came.

The fans really did not rate Schweinsteiger as a winger - he was one of the most controversial players. Bayern in the two years before van Gaal came lived of mediocrity and circus play of Ribery and Luca Toni...

He had more time at Bayern? I doubt that. In the first months it did not even look like van Gaal would survive the winter at Bayern...

On the other hand, very encouraging that he's still fully tactically astute after polishing off 2+/- bottles of wine.

Last 20 seconds: van Gaal saying he is forced by our selection NOW to use 3-5-2, and that he actually favors 4-3-3. Sounds like this formation won't last long once he gets the players he wants.

Van Gaal seriously underrating the work Alex Ferguson did at Aberdeen. Sell Herrera sack Van Gaal.

I hoped with a top manager we would get top players.

Yet I am still seeing this.

"If a club like Manchester United are interested, obviously you are doing a good job"

James McCarthy"

Like I said 10 pages in, we are never buying a superstar, we never do and never will. We aren't a big attraction anymore. If we win the UCL we might get to that standard though.

Quickly gone from "world record bids" to Vidal gone and us looking at 3 young CB's and a dodgy #10 filled midfield

"LVG: No rush to buy players, I buy players that fit my system" Authough I like that mentality that there is zero point buying a #10, if you dont need one I fear it will become the excuse ala "No value in the market"

Sensing a trend in your posts.

Roy Keane and Paul Scholes in ITV.... Brilliant now even ITV has a better midfield than Manchester United

So basically we're nothing more than a self-esteem boost for players we're interested in.

It's a bit like getting hit on by a gay bloke, you're flattered but don't really fancy it.

Moyes had no idea what he was doing though and just copied everything Fergie did in the hope it paid off.
:nono: He would have excelled if he was able to copy everything Fergie did. His major problem was, he couldn't learn, couldn't create, couldn't copy, but at the same time, insisted on his own non working philosophy.

LvG's words are music to our ears... Says some very nice things and he comes across as being honest:
"I highly respect Sir Alec...because I don't think there's another manager who won so many titles. I won many but Sir Alec won in one club that's very important."
"..I was a child and I remember Bobby Chalton... he played how I wanted to play. He was an example of big players but also a very nice human being.."

LVG bringing in drinks and bibs after practice. Gotta love it.

Doesn't he come across a bit like Sir Alex... - a father figure who cares about his players? It's a very good thing to have a manager like that (I hope the tea lady likes him too! lol) as United is a big family.

It looked like Cleverley was his son in the presser before Roma.

Seems to have a pretty special relationship with these players already.

I think they will be 100% committed to his plan come August 16th.

Grow the feck up or go find a club that is worthy of your muppetry.

What's wrong with McCarthy? You just can't see anything past him being Scottish and playing for Everton.

Did he down one glass whenever each one position was mentioned? lol

I can't see him being the heart of a Manchester United that will dominate all competitions, no. We are seen as a club that is flattering. "Yeah their interest is nice but it won't turn me."

Yet someone like Carrick managed to be a mainstay in the team for one of the most successful periods in the club's history. It isn't always about signing the biggest name. Not saying we should sign McCarthy but he has arguably proven more than Carrick had at the same age so shouldn't really be dismissed as a potential United player either.

When it comes to transfer criteria I think the number 1 concern for a few people on here is how good their name looks on their brand new kit from the megastore.

According to Rob Dawson from MEN he was doing a lot of running down the wing, beating a man and hitting a target in the box kind of training. He can't be that behind.

He's probably looking for the category DiMaria, Reus, Isco and besides that I wouldn't know much candidates.

That's mediocrity by international standards. But the Bundesliga is not a dense as the PL, in a good season Bayern becomes champion about 15 points ahead of the No 2 or 3, in a really poor season they still qualifie for the CL. So in terms of points lost it is not such a huge problem to have a difficult phase of trying to get Van Gaals plans working.

He had more time at Bayern? I doubt that. In the first months it did not even look like van Gaal would survive the winter at Bayern...
Exactly why he's in such a hurry.
