They weren't always within the rules. It's a bit of a piss take that clubs can decide to mistreat their pitch so that they have an advantage against a better side. These things should be standardised.
But it's also an issue that's not serious enough to blame a defeat on, and Xavi (rather than Pep) especially whinges about it too much.

The governing bodies are supposed to take care of that. The rules are there and not all clubs can have pitches of same high quality. As long as the pitch is per minimum standard, players and managers should find way to win. If they have legitimate case that pitches are not within rules, they should lodge complaint.
In Porto case above, if he is seriously going around telling them about pitch, then it is laughable. He has no right to do that.

It's not about small clubs not being able to have a high quality pitch. It's the dickhead clubs who have immaculate pitches all year around until they play a passing team and decide that they'll not bother looking after the pitch that are the problem.
Not defending Guardiola over the Porto pitch, I've no idea if he has a valid complaint. Generally though it's stupid that UEFA have rules on pitch standards but don't punish clubs for dick moves.

But you can't blame the clubs for that. Might not be great as spectacle but they will try to take advantage of what suits them or nullifies opposition's strength. Particularly when stakes are so high. In a sport where there is leeway in pitch size too, a considerable yards of margin if clubs want to use, one can hardly blame clubs if they don't prepare exact top class pitch but maintain within bare minimum standard. I agree that if pitches are below standard, punishment from UEFA should be stricter.

I was just mocking his demeanour and inappropriately authoritarian style. I don't think he ever mentioned Porto's pitch in relation to the game, it wasn't an issue. It's always perfect anyway. That's just about how wet he wants it for the training session the day before.
They're sorry he left and mentioned the name of the doctor who'll be replacing him until a permanent solution is found.

I was going to mention that, I was at that game. He was pissed that the mls all star players were a bit heavy in their tackles (they were), but I lost a wee bit of respect for him that day.

Look at Hargreaves' record for example. Definitely was injured more than it said he was, and it counted players who either only played one or two cup games or just played one game at the end of the season. I didn't include those players in the stats below:

When it means Bayern ACL injuries to Badstuber (2 years), Martinez (1 year), Thiago's injury (1 year) and especially injury ridden players with a track record (Ribery, Robben, lately Schweinsteiger) or older players like 9 months for Olic in 2010, van Buyten and Pizarro who with 35 seldom were able to play - cloud the statistics. The first for sure do not have anything to do with the medical department and the last are special cases.
Speaking as a fellow member of the medical profession, we are often the first to crtically evaluate our own management practices. There is honestly little that's more disconcerting than having your employers lose faith in your medical judgement and proceed to publicly humiliate you. It's not only unnecessary anf unhelpful, but thoroughly inappropriate.

This seems extremely tight-lipped for someone with as many merits and a three-decade history with the club.
