You'd think most of our players are ambitious and want to win trophies. That's why they joined us in the first place. We haven't won anything in two years, and there is no guarantee we will be a force in Europe anytime soon. I would think DDG is unhappy with his situation at the moment. Moving to Real would mean moving to a more competitive (Benitez, I know) club, with his family/gf, his home country etc. Top players always have clubs interested in them, and they know that one day they might want to leave too if we are unable to stay competitive. If we refuse DDG to leave it would send a signal that they might be refused to leave in the future as well.How would it?
The same could happen with potential signings. I would think a player is less likely to want to join a club that refuses to let players leave if they are unhappy with their situation.
The fact that we are not getting a fair deal for DDG sucks, but it's our own fault for a) not staying competetive with the best clubs and b) not giving him a new contract earlier.
