Regardless of whether or not it happens and even putting aside the debate of the quality of Ramos, surely we can all agree it's nice to see us unsettling Real Madrid for once rather than the other way round.

Yep, just as long as we don't end up missing out on both Ramos and whoever we would have signed if we hadn't gone for Ramos. That would suck massively.

He isnt good defensively thats the point. His positioning is shockingoften caught wrong side of a striker.. makes some crazy decisions. I hope if he signs he proves me wrong.

@RedStarUnited he already called I told him to sign hawkins he has a great brain.

Please name all these Defenders better than him.

The idea that Ramos isn't good defensively beggars belief. He's been one of the best in the world at it for years.

A brilliant centre back, stolen from Madrid no less, with excellent ability on the ball. And some people don't want him. Incredible stuff.

Maybe.

Im not saying Im ANTI this transfer. Im not sitting here willing it not to happen.

If we sign him for £40m or whatever price is being suggested, Ill be happy that weve signed a great player and Ill hope he doesnt get injured or sent off too often, and that he does well. I wont think we did brilliantly in the transfer market but Im used to that feeling anyway so Ill get over it.

Ill be pissed off if we throw De Gea in for the equivalent of a bag of peanuts but that's about it.

There are other CB possibilities that would excite me more but other than that, if this is the way we go, fine. But when I am next posting in the latest "Woody, what do we think of him now" thread, this deal would for me count as yet another example of Woody overpaying.

I completely understand the whole "its not my money" argument, I have no problem with people feeling that way, in some ways it makes a lot of sense. Its just not how I see it.

If it was between Otamendi and Ramos, I think I'd opt for Otamendi. But as I said, we could be working on signing them both, highly doubtful but you never know.

Would still need a RB

4 RB options there, why would we need someone else?

29 is still a good age for a centre back, but realistically you'd be hoping to get better deal than £40m for someone with only 3-4 years left at the very top. He's a good player, but unless Real give us a straight swap for De Gea, or a difference in cost of less than £5m I'd look elsewhere.

I'll admit he's a good defender, quality which we need but if he's that expensive I'll go for Otamendi anyday. Ramos will take ages to sign and we probably won't sign both.

For defensive abilities??

Varane terry koscielny boateng cheillini thiago silva ottamendi ivanovic laporte barzaghli benatia hummels subotic godin

You are kidding right?

I've actually just bolded the obvious wrong ones.

Because they are all shite at RB that's why. Ramos being the best but will be needed at CB. We need a proper RB in that position, no make shifts anymore.

The underrating of Ramos is this thread is shocking. Yes, he was very up and down when he was younger, but he's developed into one of the best (if not best) centre backs in the game. There's a reason Madrid fans absolutely love him, and these are the same people who have boo'd Ronaldo.

Defensive abilities aside ramos is probably better. But all above are all very defensively sound.. there reading of the game timing of tackles etc all are better than ramos.. just my opinion. Like I have said previously if he signs he will get my support and i will pray he proves me wrong.

Some of you lot are fecking mental. This would be an unbelievable signing.

Cue the Madrid media portraying Ramos as a dirty money grabbing whore

We can be rest assured that media, both in England and abroad, will keep asking him about what actually happened with Perez etc even after signing for us (if it happens that is). Hopefully he will ignore it and move on and won't keep blabbering about it at every given opportunity like Pogba does.

I agree with Balague for once. He's probably the best defender in the world.

As good as Rio and Vidic were for us. He's going no where and will be given his contract unless we bid an insane amount for a defender who's best years are not ahead of him. I'd rather shape a slightly younger player into our Ramos personally.
Looking at his tweets, Balague hasn't even said anything since he claimed this move was a no go. That was the 22nd June and a lot has been written since then. Be interesting to see what his views are now. Suspect he may just keep stum for the time being.

He has improved over the years but he's still capable of immense stupidity and inconsistency. For example, I'm fairly sure I've seen a few Madrid fans saying he wasn't even their best CB last year.

It's also hardly surprising that some posters have doubts over him given that there are few players who have so regularly been described as "overrated" on this site. It would be pretty hypocritical to forget all those flaws just because he's being linked with us now.

Not sure the Madrid fans loving him proves all that much either. United fans love Rafael but that doesn't mean he's perfect either.

Heroic and sublime transfer if this is actually going to happen. The need for an experienced leader at the back is a well known issue and here we are fishing for Spain's best defender. How are the tapas dishes tasting in Manchester.

Got to admit. I thought this was a bit iffy, but if anything at the very least the statement of intent this would put out if it happened would speak volumes! I'm all aboard for this

Di Maria and Ramos, a year ago that would have been every reds wishes now its real.

A year is a long time in footy

I think we can adapt McNair to RB, could do very well. Valencia (far from his biggest fan) has done very well there and if we give him a 2nd season there he should improve further. Finally as you say, Ramos. No reason why he can't play there with Otamendi at CB (If we did sign them both).

If this happens it would be a unbelievable transfer. Not only because of his quality, but also because it changes the dynamic between the 2 clubs, we can prove that we can sign anybody and that Real can lose their best players too.

For what my opinion is worth, this would be an absolutely F.A.P-worthy signing.

He's a here-and-now player - Van Gaal is clearly not looking to hang around. He wants trophies. Now.

40m for Ramos would be a fair price I think, not that I care much about what footballers cost nowadays.
add: FWIW, those who said Ramos had nothing to prove is mistaken. He could easily much more motivated in helping us win to prove that Madrid is in the wrong

It's strange that Perez is doing exactly what Ramos reproached him.

He was clearly hired to win trophies, just look at Woodward said at the conference call two months go(?), LVG is expected to win things next season. I don't blame him for going players like Ramos. A lot of fans fail to realise this, he can't take risks.
