In all fairness, this would be a very good deal, all things considered.
Frankly when it first became clear that he wasn't going to sign a contract I knew that there was no way we would keep him because financially it made zero sense for the club. Irrespective of how big we are financially 25 million for one season would have been ridiculous but I am just so pissed that we let it go to the final day
40M Euro AND Navas? That will be a great deal for us if true.
40m and Navas is a great deal for us, considering the situation we were left in with a year left on his contract... Still sad Dave is leaving, wish him all the best of luck (but not to win any trophies of course). It's definitely a fair price for him though, which I was worried we weren't getting. Hope it's true.

Even I knew that. We are soft, no doubt. When we buy players we overpay. When we sell, we underpay. This happens almost every time.
Buying Di Maria for £60M and selling him for £45M, less than 1 year later.

I work in sales and negotiate deals on a daily basis. If a seller or buyer made the above deals, he would get fired so fast, he wouldn't have time to clear out his desk.
The one time we tried to haggle on price (Pedro deal), we screwed that up and got gazumped, by Mourinho.
It might be an idea for Woodward to high a top negotiator, to be on his team, so that when he is negotiating these deals, all communication will be done via the negotiator.
In fairness, when it comes to negotiating sponsorship deals, Woodward is from the top draw. But his transfer dealings are generally terrible. I mean, sack-worthy terrible.

I don't know... all this posturing, and we end up selling on the last day of the window, and the only ones who have suffered from this whole thing is ourselves? Doesn't seem like we handled this one well at all in the end.

We need to draw a line under this. DDG acted lawfully but certainly not within the spirit. He forced our hands to get what he wanted with little regard to our best interests (of which would have been a fee to match his status at the club and long term book value).

Honestly, neither. My dream keeper is Oblak (but of course that's never happening). I can't really choose. Would prefer someone who wants to be at the club - Cillessen. I like Navas but if he won't be happy with us, would prefer he didn't come. Don't want an unhappy player.
You are saying a lot if things but ultimately saying nothing at all, you were asked what would you have done to solve this mess and you are responding by stating parts of the CEO's job description. How about outlining exactly how you would solve that particular problem when it became clear that he wasn't signing with us - which apparently became clear sometime during last season, a season in which he was our most important player which automatically means you can't push him by turning the fan base against him a la Ferguson re-the Rooney saga circa 2010. In those circumstances what would you have done?
Wasn't the posturing that we would only sell on our own terms? If the club feels it got a satisfactory deal, wouldn't that be what they have been saying they'd do all summer?

Well if our own terms means having to start the season (6 games) with a Number 2 in goal, then we have some weird terms...
Also, it sounds like we're going to get less from him then what we originally wanted (if the reports are to believed) so its not exactly selling on our terms... if anything, sounds like we could have reached this deal a month ago.
Yep that was what the posturing was about, so if we get a good fee then we haven't actually lost 'face' as Dave was going anyway. So if we get the reported deal for someone with one year left on his contract, then that is good negotiation. But I wait for the confirmation first.

The was a rumour that DDG wanted to prolong the contract last summer. LVG wasnt sure if DDG was the right keeper. That version got reapted last summer and came back this summer too. Everything ive seen from Van Gaal since his arrival leads to belive in this story.

I would have made it known he was available for sale at the end of the season. It's strange that other clubs don't get themselves into this position with their top players. All we did was twiddle our thumbs and hope everything would turn out ok.

I know you were. You have to laugh otherwise you'd cry. We've brought in some good players but failure to sort this business out with De Gea is laughable. It's all very well standing up to Real but our bargaining position has been weak all along. We've been short of a centre half and a striker; two positions we've neglected to strengthen. Blind is OK but a bit of a "make do and mend" option. We should be chasing Stones who, I wouldn't mind betting, would have been ours now if we'd shown any interest.
