Television The Caf' Anime Thread

Only around 70 episodes in the anime though.

I guess they will have extra episodes because the manga is still going.

Edit: Apparently there have been two other seasons released (in 2009 and 2014), so there are 127 episodes combined. I am pretty sure that I will finish it within this month though.
A lot of anime finish whilst the manga is ongoing.
Volg > Kimura
...smh...

Even if the anime is very popular?
Yes, because a lot of them are only intended to be 13 or 26 episodes and aren't meant to be long running. Some of them then get further seasons but some don't

I haven't watched the anime beyond the first season because I quickly continued the story reading the manga, but I'm pretty sure those 127 eps don't cover more than half of the manga chapters.

It's still ongoing and the author seems to not have tired of drawing the same stuff for more than a decade so I'm sure in a few years time you will get another season of anime eps for it.

Its tiring. He isn't even close to being WBC champion.

Yeah I got really pissed with the plot lately. He obviously loves the money he's raking in with this manga and is going for another decade. At least Kimura keeps beasting.

Since the first manga volume was released, Naoya Inoue has been born and become a two weight world champion.

So has Canelo tbf. But Inoue is Japanese, so yeah.

Is this shit actually translated in English?

Not that I am planning to read manga, but just curious.

Ippo anime is nice but it's all about the manga. The boxing isn't just limited to national championships, they will be challenging the world, albeit with imaginary world champions.

Kimura is a beast.

Edit: of course I meant Takamura. Beast.

Takamura. I meant Takamura. Silly me.

One punch man must be the best anime for a long time. Probably the first time since dragonball that I've laughed consistently through an anime. Burned through all the episodes in one night. Now no more for a long while, this is going to be attack on titan levels of frustration.

My favourite character though is bitch genos

Could someone recommend me something based on my list?

Looking for something like DBZ, Naruto, and Hunter x Hunter basically. Something with an enjoyable world, both funny and serious in parts. I'm taking a break from DBZ for now though having just finished the Cell arc of Kai, and as for Naruto, I wanna watch Shippuden but it's been yonks since I saw the original, so I feel I'll be pretty lost without rewatching that first (unless someone can find me a nice recap somewhere, I've had a look and found none).

I'm considering giving Bleach or One Piece another go, and just forcing my way through a ton of episodes till they grab me. I also tried Fairy Tail once not too long ago and there was something really silly and off-putting about it, so I don't really plan on watching that very soon.

Or just any general suggestions for some long anime will do, cheers in advance.

Off the list:

Ao no Exorcist: ★★★ Decent. Watch it if you've got nothing else to do.
Bleach: ★★★★★/ ★★★★/ ★★ - First rating till the end of Soul Society Arc. Second till the Arrancar arc. Third for the shite served after that. If you plan on watching this, just skip the fillers, starting with the Bount Arc. If you aren't hooked by the time Byakuya blitzes Ichigo (episode 15-ish), then this isn't for you.
Gintama: ★★★★★ I don't know how to describe it, but just give it a try. You won't regret it (probably). Superfun.
Ghost in the Shell: ★★★★★ Almost as good as Akira.
One Piece: ★★★★★ Best of the best as far as shonen anime go, takes a while to get going - most people get hooked by Arlong Park Arc. Caveat: It's suuuuperlong, so watch it only if you've got loads of spare time.
Magi: ★★★★ Really good. But the childish drawing style turns people off.
Rurouni Kenshin: ★★★★★ Top 10 anime of all time, must watch - including the OVAs. Not very funny though.
Mushishi: ★★★★★ Mushishi is art, but not everyone likes it. Doesn't have a distinct storyline, essentially it's a compilation of small storylines with mushi and Ginko as the sole common element(s).
No Game No Life: ★
Steins; Gate: ★★★★★ You might to persist with this one because it's relatively complex, and the first 4 or 5 episodes are weird. One of the best anime of recent years.
Another: ★★★ Decent at best.
Fairy Tail: ★★★ One Piece knockoff.

Magi's excellent. On that note, I can't wait for Sinbad's Adventure in April.

Nice one!

I've tried Gintama before and only got about six or seven episodes in. I knew already it wasn't an arc-oriented anime, with just a few drawn out ones and otherwise single stories per episode, but it didn't keep me hooked for some reason. Would you suggest pushing through with it, if it hasn't already gripped me? It can't have such high praise and not have something about it.

Same for One Piece and Bleach, do you think it's worth pushing through on those too? I think the animation put me off One Piece, and the lack of seriousness.

I've heard good things about Soul Eater, so might give that a shot if anyone's seen it.

I often go through a bunch of first few episodes of stuff to try and find something that grips me, so I've seen the starts of quite a few animes which I haven't continued with.

I'd suggest pushing through with:

1. Bleach.
2. One Piece.

In that specific order.

Bleach gets a bit monotonous after the first 6-7 episodes (fighting hollows and suchlike over and over again), but it picks up around Ep. 15 with Renji's arrival - towards the end of Substitute Shinigami arc. Just give it a go, if you don't like it by episode 20, then you might never like it. Personally, I was pretty bored until Byakuya's intro (ep. 16/17) - then I watched it non-stop till Kenphachi vs Ichigo.

As for One Piece, almost everyone hates the art style at first (the manga is almost 20 years old!), but it's the best shonen IMO, and according to most (that includes DB, DBZ, Gntama, HxH, Naruto, YYH, Bleach, InuYasha). And unlike other shonen, it never gets stale - and the characters are super likeable. As for the goofy style, that's just how Luffy is - even now (he's based on Son Goku). But once you reach Arlong Park arc, it gets more serious/ badass.

Soul Eater is great too. Death the Kid and Black★Star are really fun. But it's a bit limited in scope, with a slightly incoherent ending.

Off topic but the fecker who does One Piece earns around 20-30 million euros a year. What a life.

I tried One Piece but couldn't get into the. Can't really get into any shows with hundreds of eps. I think the commitment scares me. Plus the fact that I'll almost certainly have to sit through a filler or two.

There's this anime that's just started called Escape. I watched the first episode and I think it has serious potential. Very Monster/Steins-gate -esque.

How far into One Piece were you?
One Piece is by far and away the best shonen anime/manga out there. Pretty much a class above anything else. Also, the art really improves and there are a lot of serious, sincere, hilarious, cool, badass and sometimes downright sad moments. It just has everything.

Bleach is good. Its great up to the end of the soul society arc but goes down hill from there. The fight scenes are really good though.

Naruto Shippuden is a very steady decline from great to mediocrity. Especially after a certain point.

You should try Toriko as well. Its pretty good if not basic and simple. Lots of macho manliness and homo erotic relationships.

I enjoyed Magi too. Not as good as the first two but it does have its moments. Although you may lose interest after a certain point as it gets a bit weird with its story.

Nanatsu No Taizai is decent. Its not great and its not bad either. It lacks the emotional resonance of One Piece. Although every anime pales in comparison.

Definitely watch One Piece though. Its the only anime/manga that has brought me to tears as well, just for another nice little fact.

But considering how much work he does and especially how few hours of sleep he gets...

But considering how much work he does and especially how few hours of sleep he gets...
Yeah, he is frequently ill from fatigue. He works with pretty much every waking hour and only gets 4 hours of sleep per day on average. He isn't a big fan of having assistants do his backgrounds, storyboards and linings and does almost all of it himself. In the past 5 years he has been taken to hospital multiple times from overworking. His life isn't great by any stretch.

It's good, but "by far and away the best" is taking it a bit too far.
It's not miles away from Fullmetal Alchemist, Rurouni Kenchin, HxH, Code Geass, Death Note, Fate-series, Dragon ball and more.

Only Death Note really is at its level. Dragon Ball is a Childs series with no depth to it. Sure it looks cool but its got very clunky dialogue, basic storylines and arcs and 2 dimensional characters. Its average bar some weird nostalgia rush people get from it.

Code Geass isn't Shonen.

HXH is just not as good plain and simple. Its storylines are just not as well structured and its characters not as interesting. Its not even the authors best work (Yuyu Hakusho is).

Rorouni Kenshin I actually haven't seen.

Full metal Alchemist is great but not up to the former two's standard. The ending is very weak as well.

All of this is besides the point as these series are all finished and aren't the sort of series that the guy was asking for.

The ending of fullmetal alchemist is weak? Really?
Like, really really?
I'm afraid we will never agree on this.

And it isn't beside the point when my point was that there are many who rate their show as "the best", henche fanboying over one anime doesn't mean others will agree in that it is the best.
(I commented that little part of your post, not the intention behind it)

Also, as a sidenote, a part of code geass is (to my knowledge) shonen. So for me it is natural to bring up both in shonen and seinen discussions.

Keep in mind, i'm not even mentioning my favorite shonen, shura no toki.

Date Eiji - Ricardo Martinez match definitely the highlight of the show so far. I was watching it with the same emotion I watch exciting box matches. I thought that Martinez is basically Julio Cesar Chavez, but feck me, he is even better.

The music in the second season is spectacular. It was already great, but now it is even better.

Martinez is ridiculous. He is such a good boxer bordering on unbeatable. Its hard to imagine Ippo even getting close to him.

He jabbed the shit out of Ippo and dodged the Dempsey roll with ease.

Yeah, he looked totally invincible for most part. Although Eiji was close to defeating him considering that he managed to make his heartshoot, but unfortunately for him, his fist was already broken. If it wasn't, he would have won.

Ippo won't reach that level, but Martinez was just a year younger than Ippo, so when they'll meet, he would be well on his thirties which might give Ippo a chance. But wouldn't be funny if the manga ends with that fight, when Martinez beats the shit out of Ippo?

Nah, Martinez was toying with him all fight. The only reason he got that shot off was because Ricardo knew he was finished and let his guard down. He then went to fecking town on the guy. His jabs are unreadable as well.

Only Takamura can beat him.

Takamura of course can beat him, considering that there are five weighting classes between Middleweight (Takamura) and Featherweight (Martinez).

Sure, Martinez was toying with him and was better in every round bar the first one, but still Eiji managed to give him a shoot which would have been a KO if Eiji's fist wasn't already broken. That seems to have been the closest Martinez was to losing a match.

I meant pound for pound. I think the author rates them equal as pound for pound fighters and has said neither have any weaknesses.

Compared to his other fights which he finished in a couple rounds, yeah. He was still completely in control and was never even close to being KO'd. I also think he has a ridiculous chin as well, which hasn't been tested yet but will ne shown to ne the case when he and Ippo fight.

Martinez continuously shooting his jab at Ippo in their sparring session was hard to watch :(

Ippo best have done some serious roadwork after that beating
