PL L FA Premier League

Manchester United 0:1 Southampton

Post-match discussion

Sat, 23 January 2016

I have a friend that support another team saying its not just LVG's fault. The players have no heart or passion. I disagree. They have no heart or passion because of LVG.
Lets hope the board ask the players which manager they can be arsed to do their job with some element of professional pride for before conducting the interviews for Van Gaal's eventual successor. We should probably pay them double during that week too, for taking up more of their precious time.

Was interesting to see how Southampton controlled the first half with a 3-4-3 formation... Not one you see very often, but it worked a treat for them in the first half. Completely bossed the game and would have been one up if Mane had been a bit more on.

Those players will not be enjoying playing in that sort of atmosphere. They aren't playing well, but to say they either don't care or aren't trying is being a tad unfair.

You can't possible tell me more than 3 (at an enormous push!) of those players put anything even approaching 100% effort or commitment into their performance today. Heck you'd do well to find 5 for the entirety of the season.

You were there, who in your opinion put the effort in? Easier than saying who didn't.:)

All the money that's been spent and all the time he's had to get everyone playing his philosophy and, not for the first time this season, we resort to putting a centre back up front and lumping the ball to him! FFS! We have no pattern of play, the players get the ball and are not sure what to do with it.

Too many players look like they've never play football before, is it because of tactics or just bad man managment, but it's down to manager.

Highlight of the match was this for me.

Just got home from the game, some thoughts
  • Ander Herrera was very disappointing today - too much passing backwards, and giving the ball away. I love the guy and think he can be great for us but his performances do not justify his current status amongst the fans - I don't particularly rate him as a number 10, and think if both him and Fellaini play it should be Fella who is further forward
  • Fellaini off and Mata on was the wrong move - we needed pace, and Depay and a formation change would have been a smarter move
  • 3-5-2 in general was a disaster today with the personnel - Lingard was neutered by being deployed as a wing back, and Borthwick-Jackson while fine defensively has no attacking edge about him, so while formation wise we had width nothing of worth happened on the flanks at all. Never want to see either of them as a wing back again
  • Januzaj was a wasted sub - again, why not Memphis? Januzaj lacks fitness but also the same pace and power
  • Blind was shite - his constant long balls drew the ire of the fans more than anything else today
  • McNair had a decent game which was one of the only slight bright points - looked to want to get forward and sound defensively
  • Martial had a stinker - he looks jaded and needs resting
  • Rooney back to his usual dodgy form and inability to do simple things, bar a couple of okay moments
  • We need Carrick and Schweinsteiger back - vision and leadership
  • Schneiderlin is unfortunately very one dimensional, and doesn't have a great pass - I'd rather see Blind played in his position as he has a much greater passing range while still being sound defensively
  • Although we were dreadful it still saddens me to hear the fans boo.... not because it's unjustified, just the very fact it's come to the point where such venom from our own supporters is necessary
As soon as I heard that Liverpool had nicked the win on the walk up to the ground I knew it would be a shit day. Serves me right for laughing my arse off when Norwich made it 4-4.

Have just watched the Klopp & Players slow-mo celebration on Twitter and feel fairly sick and saddened. Don't know why I did that to myself.

I feel bad for Van Gaal if he was talked out of resigning, and desperately wanted him to turn it round because I like the guy, but surely there is no option now but for him to go given the reaction of the crowd, the continued terrible football, and the dreadful results.

I missed the match and only heard a few moments of half time analysis. The pundit said it was the worst he'd seen United all season. That's a pretty tall order since we've played absolutely horrible at times. Was it that bad and did the second half get worse?

He's lucky we had a few decent results, if not performances since the Bournemouth/Norwich/Stoke triple header, as if this had followed immediately he'd definitely have gone.

But the pressure eased substantially, so we're not even at the panic we were then yet

You speak for yourself. I am well in panic mode. Worried that he will even be here next season. I feel sick.:(:nervous:

It was just the typical tumescent football that we have been serving up all season pretty much. I managed to find a decent stream to watch it but shouldn't have bothered, boring and depressing.

It is so easy to come to OT and get a draw or a win. Sit back and just counter attack.

A back 5 will probably make it a bit easier. Go 5-4-1 and the team will manage to get a draw at least.

We can't break teams down, it's has been that way and will continue to be that way. He hasn't got any idea how to turn it around. He has to go.

I've not seen the game yet, what happened with the crowd reaction?

In a word - Yes

There were first boos during the first half (I think?) when we just seemed unable to pass the football, and then at FT they really tore into LVG with really really loud booing. And I think it was as he was walking by the touchline towards the dressing room too.

You would think his family would be asking him to quit now for his healths sake.

We are a team who have been on a decline since Fergie left. We thought it was an aberration. It isn't. We are milking the fanbase cash cow right now, but soon the money will dry up, too. The players will leave, and we will be stuck in mediocrity, stuck to memories of heydeys.

We will not play the football we used to anytime soon. We might never get back regular CL again.
History repeats itself. We are the new Liverpool.

Hurts less when you start accepting it.

Sadly, I agree with you

Numb nowadays.
Not sure if it is down to LvG or players really. If the players dont like LvG why dont they just tell the club they cant take him anymore

Also the last game I went to was the Norwich game... so in total I've spent about £100 watching utter fecking shite and losing at home. Hurray.

Southampton didn't even seem to come for the win today, neither did Norwich, but we handed it to them on a plate.

Me and my mate walking home tonight were both in agreement that Van Gaal couldn't possibly stay now... but then recalled we'd said the exact same after Norwich, so who knows?

Just returning from the game. It's my first in a while as work and family commitments have kept me away and I can honestly say that it's worse live than in tv.
The atmosphere is flatter than I have experienced in 30 odd years of match going. It was far more palpable than I expected and LVG does appear to have made good players worse.
I can't for the life of me see where progress is being made. It was actually sad to hear booing of the nature I heard today but entirely justified.
The club's ethos has been stripped away and we are completely insipid.

Funny enough, I was watching them walk out before the game on MUTV and they said what a fantastic atmosphere. I actually thought it sounded flat then. By the way what was the music they walked out to, everyone is moaning about it?

This is the One by stone roses
Sadly we aren't living up to the hype. The even sadder thing is that no one was surprised by the performance or result

I suppose the only positive right now is that, unlike 13/14, Liverpool don't look like winning the league.

I think people are now expecting this, but still trying to back the players. If the players are not backing him then he is on a hiding to nothing. I do not expect us to win any games now. It is more of a surprise when we do. I never, ever thought I would feel like that.

wait, what? People are moaning about the songs?

It's normally one of the songs from Rocky, and has been for years, but for some reason today it was the 20th Century Fox theme music I believe? Could be something to do with the recent commercial deal they've signed.

It's like the sort of thing you might have suggested, as a joke, might happen had Murdoch taken over.

@Rood were you there today? What is the feeling like around the ground at the moment, and especially after the match today?

A really bad day for United. We got away with it for the last couple of weeks as all the teams around us dropped points, at one point today we looked like we could get away with it again, but Spurs and Liverpool both came back from being behind and Leicester destroyed Stoke. :(

Ye I was there - despite the lack of action of the pitch, atmosphere in Jstand was still decent. But the players didnt respond and there was more booing than Ive ever heard at OT at full time.

I remember being asked this a few months ago and at that point there was a small amount of people mostly in Stretford End booing but the feeling of discontent has spread massively.

I personally would neve boo but as I said on the podcast last week, I can understand why it has gone that way.

We are selling our soul. Anything for a quick buck.

Are they blaming the manager? I know they want to support the players, but if they are playing to the managers instructions nothing will change until he goes.
