David Moyes | West Ham in talks with him for managerial job

Funny thing is they play Stoke and West ham next, both ahead of them. If they don't win one game, they can sack him immediately.

I remember all of you either showing full blown, luke warm, or tacit levels of support when he was hired, with only a few hedging your bets. Just leave him alone. He's got nothing to support himself conversationally in pubs ten years from now.

He's going to last fewer games at both Soceidad and Sunderland than here, yet there were some Manchester United fans who thought he deserved more time...

Don't really understand the hate for him here/longing for him to not do well.

Yeah decent, likeable, honest, hardworking chap who has never had a bad or disrespectful word to say about United, United fans or anyone associated with the club.

Moyes on Sunderland's league position: "It matters all the time, to be honest. I'm taking notice of it, but I'm trying not to look at it, if that makes any sense at all."

To be completely honest, that's a fair statement imo.

This! Absolutely this!!

It's an obfuscated message for so many reasons, the first being you don't take notice of something you try not to look at (at least you don't admit taking notice or it defeats the point you're trying to make). Second, why is he "trying" not to look at all? Either do or don't.

What message is he trying to convey? That league position right now is not important? Or that it is important but Sunderland are so bad he can't bear to look?

Why not just say something like everyone else, "We will focus on the next game and see where we are at the end of the season" or "It's still early in the season and our league position doesn't reflect the true ability of this squad"?

The whole way Moyes phrases it is just discouraging and counterproductive.

What? He says he's trying not to look at the position but unfortunately it's pretty bad and his attempt not to look fails often. You guys will slaughter him with anything he says in a press conference.

"I made us get to the champions leag - " HAHA Arrogant Twat!
"I don't know what we could do to win- " HAHA spineless cnut

To me, he seems to be saying he is trying to not to be under pressure because of the league position as you tend to perform better without pressure but at the same time it's hard not to feel that pressure too. Obviously he could have worded it better, and he himself felt so as he added the 'if that even makes sense' line at the end

I can't stand the miserable shrivelled ball-sack face of a man. It would be mighty satisfying if he got sacked without winning a PL game with Sunderland.

Well it's not his fault you didn't have the football intelligence to understand what he was doing.

Yeah i definitely didn't understand most of what he was trying to do. But to be fair neither did he i suspect.

Exactly, badly worded, and it wasn't even a difficult or uncommon question he was answering. And now that response which inspires no clarity or confidence is out there for each of his players to interpret.

Even the way you interpret it above, wanting to not be under pressure but admitting to feeling the pressure, is a counterproductive message. If the aim is to take the pressure off then find a way to convey there's no pressure!

I don't hate Moyes but I do think he is a terrible public speaker. He's probably more suited to being a coach than a manager, if anything. You need a lot of personality to be a manager.

Yeah i think that might finally shatter his delusion that he's a Champions League level manager. It's debatable if he's even a Premier League level manager right now.

He was manager of Manchester United.

Manchester United appointed him and had the neck to brag about it

Up there with the most insane, ridiculous decisions made in the history of mankind...

It will never make sense

To be fair to secure his signature we had to beat off intense competition from er....

The taint of having David Moyes as manager, I suspect, will linger in the collective psyche of Utd supporters for years to come. Sure, we fecked up similarly after Busby with the McGuinness appointment, but at least he was one of our own, whereas the Scottish Gollum has no connection to the club whatsoever besides being Fergie's buttboy.

there is no way you can that way. You can only say stuff like that in a TV interview. This is quite common that managers say stuff like this. Sunderland players aren't going to be void of pressure whatever he says. Sometimes an unambiguous answer is the best answer as people dont really understand what is being said to critiscize. As someone else said above, he seems to be critiscized irrespective of what he says so how does it make a difference what he says?

I'm not into the personal abuse, but there are two points. One he was dreadful manager for us. And two - had he not spent so much time bad mouthing the club after he left then I'd have probably got over the first point pretty rapidly. As it is he keeps on reminding me of his tenure and how bad it was. If he stops talking about United then I'll stop criticising him.

If he acted or spoke like a top manager it would make a difference. It's the badly worded, counterproductive, negative statements which provide the ammunition.

Yep, agree with this. He just isn't inspiring enough. Must be a challenge for players to be motivated by him.

@prath92 contrast Moyes' message with that of Mark Hughes whose Stoke sit bottom of the league and have Man Utd away next.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes: "We think it's only a matter of time before it comes because we're not playing badly. The last two games I've seen a confident team, a team that wants to address the situation and get the maximum points.

"It's not as if our confidence has been affected, we're fine in that regard, but clearly we want to get three points on the board as quickly as possible.

"It's going to be difficult this weekend because clearly our record at Manchester United isn't great. It's a big ask but, if we're going to get a first win on the board, why can't it be at Old Trafford?"
Never in a month of Sundays would Moyes come out with something so positive.

His last job in the Premier League, I reckon.
