Top 4 race 2016/17

If Arsenal do make it into the top 4 and we win the Europa league...we will be knocked down into pot 3 for the CL draw. Some of the possibilities :nervous:

Real Madrid - PSG, Dortmund, Porto, - United - Roma
Bayern - Barca, Atletico, Sevilla, PSG, Porto - United - Roma
Juventus - Barca, Atletico, Sevilla, PSG, Dortmund, Porto - United - Roma
Monaco - Barca, Atletico, Sevilla, Dortmund, Porto - United - Roma
Benfica - Barca, Atletico, Sevilla, PSG, Dortmund - United - Roma
Shakhtar - Barca, Atletico, Sevilla, PSG, Dortmund, Porto - United - Roma
Spartak - Barca, Atletico, Sevilla, PSG, Dortmund, Porto - United - Roma

Go Liverpool in other words :nervous:

Ugh

As much as I hate to say it, we should hope that Liverpool, not Arsenal, finish fourth. If Arsenal qualify for next year CL, we'll be relegated to pot 3 in the CL draw (assuming we're going to win EL of course).

We're currently 15th in the UEFA coefficient rankings. Assuming the league finishes today (I assumed Madrid will win La Liga despite them not being first at the moment, just to make this whole thing easier), the pots will be:

Pot 1 (League winners of top 7 leagues + CL winners): Real Madrid, Bayern, Chelsea, Juventus, Monaco, Spartak Moscow, Benfica, Shakhtar Donetsk (As it's very likely the CL finalists Juve or Madrid will win the title, the extra CL spot goes to the 8th best league winner which is Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk).

The remaining pots are based on the remaining teams in the UEFA coefficient rankings
Pot 2: Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, PSG, Dortmund, Sevilla (have to go through a qualifier), Man City (qualifier), Porto, Man United
Pot 3: Napoli (qualifier), Spurs, Basel, Dynamo Kiev (qualifier), Ajax (qualifier), Olympiacos, Anderlecht, Liverpool

Couldn't be bothered with pot 4, but you get the idea. Obviously it depends on a lot of things as the season isn't over yet but I'd say we'd be between pot 2 and pot 3. For example, if Arsenal do manage to qualify over Liverpool, we'd go down to pot 3 as Arsenal have a higher coefficient than us.

If we do get into pot 3, it's entirely possible we could get a group like
Real Madrid
PSG
Man Unit

Here's the current ranking of UEFA coefficiency (Arsenal are ahead of us, while Liverpool are below us)

Nah feck it. If we are gonna be in the CL let's play the best teams and play them early.

Tbh I don't care much about that. We aren't winning the competition next year anyway so no point in wanting easy or hard group. I just want CL for the market only ATM.

Still think it's a hard ask for Arsenal. Even if West Ham do them a favour.

If it goes to the last day then you gotta fancy Liverpool. I know they had trouble at home against lesser teams. But Boro is possibly the easiest game you can get at home besides Watford and Sunderland currently. They were atrocious against Chelsea.

Also, we got a very easy group in our last run in CL and still got eliminated, so no big difference.

At least we'll rise our games if the group was hard and as long as we won't win it anyway, it's going to be fun playing strong teams early.

LFC have ballsed this season up completely, now have to win away from home to guarantee qualification.

Following on from Bojan11, So'ton were atrocious against us. Terrible position but anyway.

Come on guys, it's Wenger we're talking about here. If he's a specialist in something besides failure, it's a specialist in retaining the fourth spot trophy.

We just need to beat Stoke I feel. Do that and Liverpool will be under an insane amount of pressure at an in-form West Ham. Considering Pool's recent form a win there looks very tough.

I wouldn't rule City out yet. They don't win against Leicester and they might become nervous.

fair comment, we just need two wins I think so can afford one cockup (which I'm sure we'll have) but anymore and then who knows, still think Arsenal have the most difficult run in still but it'll be tight

Liverpool will beat West Ham. Some kind of 40 yard volley from Moreno would be my guess given how they've won other games recently.

For sure. Stoke away are gonna be hell. They like to play us.

I wonder what the mentality of the opposition are going into games like these. Stoke and West Ham have nothing particularly to play for. Perhaps they will aim for a top 10 finish, but that requires some movement from the teams above them.

But whilst they know their own seasons are by far and large are over. They will also be very aware of the what damage they can do to top 4 hopes.

Can they still be arsed though? They're safe from relegation, and they're not getting more than a couple of extra places up the table at best. You might be catching them just as they're mentally on the beach already.

*edit* wrote that, and then realized the very post above this basically said exactly the same thing.. :wenger:

Well, they usually "hate" us so i expect a tough game.

If Liverpool don't get 4th place they have nobody but themselves to blame. Looking at the soft points dropped week after week makes me want to cry. West Ham seem to be a bit of a bogey team for Liverpool so I am not holding my breath for a win on Sunday. Arsenal seem to have started a bit of a roll and since Jose and United made absolutely zero effort to beat them last week . I fear the worst

The good news for Liverpool is that Mike Dean is reffing Stoke - Arsenal. Expect Arsenal to finish with less than 11.

Excellent result for Arsenal as they not only up the pressure on Liverpool but equal their Goal Difference. Obviously that means anything but a Liverpool win puts Arsenal firmly in pole position. However they have a banker against Sunderland, followed by (on paper) a much tougher game vs Everton. Everton has literally nothing to play for and their place is cemented. But the question is, will Everton roll over for Arsenal at potentially Liverpool's expense? Even City aren't safe yet. WBA are a stubborn side to play as they'll set up to frustrate that City attack despite its strength. Should they get through that game, they should be good for top 4 as I'd expect them to beat Watford with their attacking options.

As for Liverpool, well I think they'll beat Middlesbrough in the final gameweek, but tomorrow could be the critical one. I wonder what West Ham will be thinking going into this game as they know the consequences for Liverpool if they stifle them. Liverpool fans should be concerned, but also keep in mind they have grinded out wins vs WBA and Stoke in recent times. So they are capable. It'd be the biggest failure if they don't get top 4 from here.

For me, Liverpool and City to get top 4, and Arsenal to just miss out. Consequences of missing out on CL next season starting with the most disastrous goes Liverpool>United>Arsenal>City, IMHO.

They're certainly not going to be putting up much of a fight. Liverpool will need to win twice to qualify.

How is it more disastrous for us to miss out than Arsenal?

Tomorrow is make or break for our season now. Crazy that we've put ourselves in this position but it is what it is. We have really struggled against West Ham in recent years and it's their last home match of the season so they'll want to go out with a bang.
Going to be tough and I can only see us at most getting a draw which will put Arsenal in the driving seat.

How is it more disastrous for us to miss out than Arsenal?

It's all based on the way the season's panned out. At the moment we are able to say that being out of the CL is a blip, but the longer that goes on the more difficult it becomes to justify that. Missing out on the CL would be Arsenal's first season out. Now obviously we have our extensive funds and the Mourinho factor to offset that, but given the money we spent and what I consider to be the better squad and manager, it would be a bigger failure for us to miss out than them. We've had 2 chances to qualify, and not taking one is disastrous. It could have devastating consequences for them of course. Sanchez may leave, and Wenger will likely stay regardless and that could start a downward spiral for them. On the other hand, there's a chance missing out might finally spur the higher ups into action, Wenger may walk and they might finally start taking the transfer window seriously. I put City last fwiw, because I think one season without CL will hurt them least and they have Pep's gravity to fall back on.

It's all based on conjecture to be honest. There's too many variables that may or may not influence proceedings for each club.

Prefer Liverpool to get it. Arsenal fans are so arrogant so it would be nice to see them come down a peg or to and be in the Europa League. Liverpool in the Champions league wont matter one bit. They are not good enough to do well in that compeition, and playing 2 games per week will f*ck them up

They'll play 2 even if they finish 5th. I can take Arsenal fans and their arrogance as long as we get another season of Wenger at Arsenal.

Wenger is like a magician: 'For my next trick I will somehow finish in the top 4'.

think Liverpool will eek it out today

they've had a poor season relatively speaking.... played 20 games less than us and all that time to prepare

it's annoying that we haven't done it via the league...had we a player like Hernandez I'd say wed have turned at least 3/4 of those draws into wins....

Jose's mistake - a blind man could see how useful and productive Rooney, Schneiderlein, Schweinsteiger, Fellaini, Young, and Depay would be.... hoping he makes the right decisions in the Summer

Arsenal are more likely to finish 4th. It will be very difficult for Liverpool to win vs Wham.

Arsenal are playing some very good football at the moment and have the momentum. We are stuttering from one game to the next and that penalty miss must be killing them. We have to win at West Ham and the way we are playing that is a tall order. However the positive is that Klopp knows he can't hold back hoping to sneak a goal to win it .. which seems to have been the modus operandi in the past few games. All or nothing, must go all out for it, though I fear it could be nothing as confidence is clearly at low tide.

I think Liverpool will come out flying in a coke-induced spree in the first 20 minutes and blow West Ham away.
