Agreed on the Rose part, Davies has definitely stepped up this season. Yeah, Lamela got a lot of stick from opposing fans, but he runs his arse off and is aggressive - as well as having a bit of flair.

That is a very strong bench, have to say. You've gotta expect you guys are going to fill your squad with youth players though, you're not in the business of having older squad players.

Anyway, won't make a blind bit of difference when you come up against us ;)

Yeah exactly and I think Poch actually prefers it that way anyway to be honest.

Let's hope you're wrong about that! :)

Yes, there is probably one scenario where financial isn't the number one factor and that is on the situation you desrcibed: when a player is young, not quite proven and looking for playing time... in order to prove his worth and thus get a proper payday. Which is not the situation Alli is in.

Whilst financial is number 1 in almost every scenario, I think it's important to note that the difference between an extra 10-20% might not swing other factors. A difference of double or treble will, of course.

I think that Levy will realise that he has done fantastic in suppressing the wage bill but will have to loosen up for some of these upcoming contract renewals. Spurs now have some truly proven top quality players.

True, especially the bit about doubling/ tripling the salary.

Like I said, I don't think Dele will be here in 3 seasons time but in the short term, I don't think it is in his own best interests to move somewhere like Real for 100+ and then almost certainly receive dogs abuse for playing how he is now. Modric and Bale, I could see it. When they moved, they were ready. Kane if he wanted to move now, again. Eriksen etc too. Dele? Very productive player but can stil coast in and out of games (as is normal for younger players). That won't be tolerated at Real.

Though hilariously, a journalist at the Express wrote a story quoting that we were ready to offer >600k per week to retain Dele. I would like to try some of what he is on.

I hope they keep them all. I love that there are a full handful of very good sides in the PL right now. There isn't yet a truly excellent one, but 4-6 that you would call very good.

The challenge for Spurs isn't that they can't afford to pay Kane £200k+ and Alli £150k... it's that Eriksen, Alderwaild and co. Will come knocking for big pay rises too. It could cause a general inflation right across the team.

Levy is smart. Maybe he can find a way round it with bonuses, under hand signing on fees etc.

Yeah, agree with Poch, no idea what Pep was trying to do, but came across in a disrespectful way imo. Not a big deal though.

Thought he was just complementing Harry Kane tbh

That very same week Pep had a go at Chealsa and United regarding their style of play, it was far from a compliment from Pep, he's a classless tool. People could aim comments like "Team Messi" or "Team Lebandobski" at him but he seems so arrogant that he can't even see that fact.

But it'd be wrong, his teams were less dependent on Messi and Lewa than Spurs is on Kane. But it is a needless thing to say anyway as Spurs have an excellent team generally with Kane as the superstar.

Oh come on, you can't seriously believe Pep meant any harm by the comment. He was referring to Kane's form. If Pochettino called City the de Bruyne team, I wouldn't give a feck or see it as classless, I'd see it as a compliment of de Bruyne's abilities and present form. Guardiola was right to emphasise that out of all the managers he probably has spoken the highest of Spurs in the past. It was in no way an attempt to dismiss the other Spurs players, and it's pretty sad that Pochettino chose to interpret it that way. From what I hear, the two do not get on particularly well, so that perhaps explains it.

Your a City fan of course you can't see it, it's no surprise that that very same week he knocked both Man Utd and Chelsea for their style of play.

I'm not so sure. Spurs went without Kane for two decent patches last season when he hurt his ankle twice and did quite decent. In fact during one of those patches as others have pointed out Spurs beat City 2-0 without Kane.

I wonder what City fans would think if Pochettino called them the Sheikh Mansour team.

Agree. And someone like Erikssen is on par of Kane in term of influence on the team. Kane being the forward has responsibility to provide cutting edge, which he did great. However, between useless possession to creating a chance Eriksen was vital. And praising Eriksen without mentioning the team would be considered taking away from other Tottenham players given they as a whole input in the team play. For Pep to go with one man team talk, simply inexcusable

“15 years?” Pochettino said on Monday evening, as quoted by ESPN FC: “It’s up to him [Levy]. It’s always up to the owner or chairman to decide if you’re a manager for a short time or long period."

“I’m so happy. I enjoy my time at Tottenham, it’s a club with big potential, new stadium and facilities which will be best in Europe. ... I hope I stay 10-15 years at Tottenham. If he [Levy] wants I would love to sign that contract.”

Cheers for the interesting Tottenham-news posted on this Manchester United-forum. I am sure we couldn’t have found it on let’s say SkySports.

You can find lots of things on SkySports that are also posted in various threads. The difference is that when they are in a thread they provide a focal point for discussion by those who so wish.

Would you have made the same dumb comment if a United fan had posted it? I doubt it.

The better quote was him confirming he could never manage Barcelona. He seems to be someone who remains super loyal to people and clubs (the way he talks about Bielsa, the way he obviously remains loyal to Espanyol, etc) and that gives hope that as long as Spurs provide him a good situation he'll want to stay and work with the club.

Also, as a fan ... having your manager talk about your club the way he talks about Spurs is just heart warming.

What do people predict about the score of tonight's game between Spurs and Real Madrid?

Can see Spurs getting something from the game in all honesty. Real Madrid have looked a bit average recently. Saying that, it's RM and they are the best team in Europe.

Its going to be interesting to see what tactics Poch decides to use, against Dortmund he did sit deeper and went more direct and I think he will have to do that again.

Got to love 'em grass is green and sky is blue type of insights

We're expected to lose and don't need to win, so hopefully this will allow to team to play freely ... and if we get anything it will be a bonus in one sense.

Alli is banned, but Dembele is apparently available again, so what's the XI you'd like to see fielded?

Funny enough I do think Spurs have a much better chance to do well in Madrid. Both Tottenham and Real Madrid are among the few teams that actually play better away from home.

I do consider to bet on a draw tonight and for Real Madrid to win at Wembley.

Will be interesting to see how it turns out.

I think we need to respect their quality and try to limit the space for them as much as possible. I would go for a back 3 and play Aurier on the right wing back to try and combat Marcelo. Left wing back is difficult with Davies out, but I wouldn't play Verthongen there since I think a stable back 3 is vital, probably Trippier since we lack other options. Ahead of them I'd play Dier and Dembele and try to stay compact with those 7 players, and be careful of giving too much space to work with, Real love space and there's no need to give it to them for free.

For attack I'd go with Son's pace paired with Kane and Eriksen and try to hit them on the break, if we can keep the ball, having Dembele to try and create some space would be great as well. If we go a goal behind I'd honestly try and get Sissoko on and try more direct runners, maybe Llorente and try to get crosses from deep.

Gonna be a tough match.

What do you reckon?

What a weird statement, are you criticising a guy for posting about Spurs in a Spurs thread?

I'd go with the same XI as you, except I'd be very tempted to go with Walker-Peters as left wing-back instead of Trippier (given that Davies hasn't recovered enough from his illness). In his young career so far Walker-Peters has played on the left more often than Trippier, so knows the position better. Plus he has more pace, which will help with the counter-attacking game we'll probably have to play. I'd also go with WP because with Trippier on the left we wouldn't in any case be able to benefit from the excellent crosses into the box that he can provide from the right flank - so his major asset is nullified when playing on the left.

Yes, it's a big ask to throw him into a huge game like this, but he has the security of Vertonghen behind him on that left side.

If you don't want to read about Spurs, browsing the Spurs thread isn't the greatest of ideas.

Interesting, I didn't know Walker Peters has played on the left on a few occasions, and you're right that Trippiers best asset would not be utilized on the left, and probably not in a game like this when we're not expected to dominate. I wouldn't be against trying that, especially considering whoever we put there will probably be less than ideal with our two regular starters out.

I am excited for the tactics Pochettino use as well, really looking forward to the game.

Very nervous today - massive match this evening vs Real Madrid and also awaiting confirmation of who Northern Ireland will get in the play-offs. I'll be a nervous wreck by about 7.15pm and barely capable of watching the match. My wife will likely have divorced me by 8pm.

Yes, for example he played 5 matches at LB in the U20s England team that won the U-20 World Cup recently.

Least it is not all bad.

Tottenham will take the game to Madrid I think. They have 6 points from 6 and wouldn't have looked at this fixture as one they should be getting anything out of. If they had dropped a couple points then it would be different, but with only them and Madrid with any points so far, it makes the situation better.

I can't see them outscoring Madrid, but I think Madrid will need at least 2 goals to get the win.

I've gone for a both score, no draw tonight. I have a feeling you'll definitely get a goal, just not sure you'll be able to keep them out.

What do people predict about the score of tonight's game between Spurs and Real Madrid?

Spurs have an outside chance of pulling off an upset tonight, Real aren't exactly firing on all cylinders as of yet. Much will depend on how the your players adapt to the situation, playing at the Bernabau is no easy task at the best of times, but Spurs' players are fairly inexperienced generally speaking and this game will be a baptism of fire for most of them. Good squad experience regardless of the result.

Regardless of the outcome I think it's safe to assume Harry Kane will score at least once.

Got to love 'em grass is green and sky is blue type of insights

lol true it comes across like that. I do think Spurs could nick a win at the Bernabeu though. I don't see Spurs losing the game, I'll say that.

This is Spurs, vs the best team in Europe. I dont see them getting anything at Madrid, 3-1 to RM. I thought Spurs were lucky with that Dortmund game, a goal ruled out that wasnt offside for Dortmund. Dortmund dominated possession. And looked good throughout, Spurs were at their temporary home and only had around 30% possession.

RM went to Dortmund and handily beat them 3-1.

Do Spurs now have the best defensive unit in Europe?

Personally I don’t really rate Rose so I would say that could be improved on but last year they were one of if not the best defence I had seen. But with the changes at Juve are Spurs now the best?
