Premier League Gameweek 26 (3rd - 5th February 2018)

Please hurry up and interview Klopp. His twattishness could reach new levels.

A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
  • gaining an advantage by playing the ball or interfering with an opponent when it has:
  • rebounded or been deflected off the goalpost, crossbar or an opponent
It was offside.

There was no deflection. He tried to kick the ball and sliced it. He tried to play the ball.

From the laws of the game...

In the context of Law 11 – Offside, the following definitions apply:
“gaining an advantage by being in that position” means playing a ball i. that rebounds or is deflected to him off the goalpost, crossbar or an opponent having been in an offside position.

Surely this says that if a pass hits a defender on the way through, you're still offside?

You'll make a serious profit on him if he does go. He's absolutely brilliant, gotta say I thought he'd be ok for you at best. he's been phenomenal.

I don't say it often on here for obvious reasons but we're all a bit blinded by the 'fab four'. Mane is very good (going through a stinking patch) but the reason Coutinho and Firmino look 25% better each is because of this little magician.

I'm going to get pelters from both Utd and Pool fans for saying that, sour grapes etc, but take Salah out and we don't have or didn't have a remaining fab three. I'm in the serious minority who thinks we need better than Firmino long term. But while we still have Salah then rock on!

Still smalltime. Still remember RvP scoring a hattrick for us after missing a pen. Didn't even celebrate properly. Class act. Kane as smalltime as this Tottenham team.

I am no Spurs lover.
I desperately wanted us to beat them a few days back, but IMO Kane is the best striker in the World. If you want goals, Kane will get them for you.
If Madrid spend £200M on him, it will be money spent.
I only wish we were in for him.

1st pen incident - Kane's pen saved by Karius

Didn't the rules get changed recently with offside, where if the offside player is influencing the game (whether or not he actually touches the ball) then its given as offside? You can clearly hear the linesman say "if he (Lovren) didn't the ball, its offside". Bit dodgy that.

Don't think either one was a pen tbh, but it meant 2 dropped points for Liverpool, so I'm certainly not gonna complain!

Isn't Kane offside when the ball is played to him? What does a defender getting a touch have to do with anything?

I think it was probably offside but it is not that straightforward. If instead of Ali, it was a liverpool player who was trying to attempt a back pass, then Kane's offside position won't matter. Now when Ali makes the pass, I think it touches a Liverpool player (Not Lovern, the one before him, not 100% but I think it does) and you can interpret it as a new phase as soon as Pool player makes that touch and hence Kane being offside is irrelevant now. But issue for me is that Ali is making the pass for Kane, who is offside then, if he had attempted it for someone else and liverpool player had deflected on Kane's path who was offside then it would have been fine IMO.

That's what I think but the lino and now Carragher seem to think the defender getting a touch means its not offside. I can't know more than a professional official and an ex pro player, can I?
The offside decision is based on the position the attacking player is in when the ball is played through by the attacking player's team-mate.

Of course.

Especially since his offside position forces the poor touch from Lovren, ie interfering with an opponent. If he's not there then Lovren doesn't need to lunge at it and can just let it through to Karius.

For the first goal he was wrong
I'm talking about the assistant ref. He did say that Kane was offside for the first penalty. He just didn't know whether the touch by the defender was deliberate or not. The ref was the one who decided that it was deliberate.

Ref talk aside(btw, first one offside, second one stonewall), how the feck did spurs not win this???:lol:

Regardless of anything though. We were poor by our standards in these games, and that's down to the selection /tactics

There was no deflection. He tried to kick the ball and sliced it. He tried to play the ball.

Surely the only reason the defender is trying to hack the ball away at that point is because Kane is behind him (in an offside position). Not sure how that's not interfering with play.

For those saying not a penalty

Deflecting off a player is not the same as not hitting it properly
There was no deflection. He tried to kick the ball and sliced it. He tried to play the ball.
You're still wrong though.

  • clearly attempting to play a ball which is close to him when this action impacts on an opponent or
  • making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball
or
  • gaining an advantage by playing the ball or interfering with an opponent when it has:
  • rebounded or been deflected off the goalpost, crossbar or an opponent
  • been deliberately saved by any opponent

Kane was in an offside position when the pass was made and it clearly had an impact on Lovren's actions. His attempt for a clearance ('a deliberate save') doesn't change it; it was the result of an opposing player in an offside position. It was offside, no question.

Surely the only reason the defender is trying to hack the ball away at that point is because Kane is behind him (in an offside position). Not sure how that's not interfering with play.

I can’t agree Duffer at all. He is trying to clear the ball because they are under pressure and that is what defenders do. What would you expect him to do in that situation?

Perfect result for us, especially when the pool fans are whining too!

Can they ban Kane for his dive, despite he missed the pen?

Both teams bottled it up, but overall it was a fair result. Liverpool were crap in second half. They cannot defend for their life. Anyone saying they are better side than us need a long look at them. Perfect result for every other team.
