Portuguese Football 2017/2018

What do you guys think of Raphinha at Vitoria? I came across him when he helped knock my Napoli side out of the EL in my FIFA game.

Checked his record this season and he seems pretty prolific but I've never seen him play.

He seems to be a nice prospect. He will play for Sporting next season, we should have a better idea then if he'll have a future in top football.

I'm ashamed of this league and country in general. Wish the north would leave the lazy and corrupt scum of the south, otherwise this country won't ever go forward. I don't even know why this thread gets bumped so often, i avoid this like the plague. No one except 1 or 2 bored souls really care about it so just use your Portuguese forums for this. Nothing personal lads.
Have you forgotten of the Apito Dourado? Or the fact that Porto is one of the most corrupt clubs if not the most corrupt club in Portugal. What Porto have done under the reigns of Pinto Da Costa is disgusting. Not one Porto fan at all has any right to talk about "Corruption" against their club. Their is a reason your club is nicknamed Futebol CORRUPTO do Porto.

Sorry @Snowjoe but although i disliked and reported his post (first time i ever reported a post), i have to write this and i'll drop it.

Have a word with yourself. Christ you are a Porto fan, wind your neck in. And don't give me the crap about the justice system (FROM THE COMARCA OF THE NORTH) absolving, the audio is there for everyone to hear at youtube. I'm not even going to address the rubbish you wrote about the north and the south. What are you? 10 years of age? Do i have to remind you of Fátima Felgueiras, Avelino Ferreira Torres, Fernando Gomes, Valentim Loureiro. Corruption is everywhere in the country, it's widespread, it has nothing to do with specific regions. And before of accusing me of being an sulist, elitist and liberal, although i was born in Lisbon, my family roots are in the north, Vila Real. If you don't like the thread, don't post here. I'm disappointed you wrote that post and actually have that kind of north/south view, it's disgusting and backward thinking. I suppose you would like that the north of europe would do the same to Portugal?

About yesterday's game, although i was highly skeptical about that lineup, we ended up winning thanks to Bas Dost entering. The quality of football was once again subpar. I can't remember the last game we actually had "nota artística".

I was a bit neutral but after this last accusation by Sporting against my club, now I hope they don't win it. Amazing how accusations of clubs losing on purpose are thrown around as if they're nothing. That Saraiva is a disgusting character.

What did he say about Arsenal?

Maybe there should be a topic about portuguese football where we discuss the things that don't happen in the stadion

Hum, an Arsenal fan of Briosa? We don't have nothing against Académica, but actually I see some games from Segunda Liga related with our B team, and its so easy to score penaltys vs us, not to mention the strange connections clubs like Leixões have with Benfica, hopefully Académica stays out of the Vieira circuit and keeps their independence.

Yes, I support Académica. I don't watch Sporting B games so I wouldn't know about refereeing in those matches, but I watch some Benfica B matches because of my brother and there was absolutely nothing suspicious about the 4-0 match. Académica had a good game and Benfica B is a team that when starts bad, they lose focus and concede many goals. Just a couple of weeks before they conceded 5 against Viseu and Massamá.

Maybe there's some bad blood between the boards, I confess I don't follow that stuff, but implying we won because Benfica let us was a dick move.

It was the 6th match this season we scored at least 4 goals, we got 3 points against Benfica in both matches and 4 against Sporting. I mean it's just ridiculous to suggest cheating was involved and insulting the players because of some backstage bs didn't sit well with me at all. I talk to people who follow the politics and they tell me right now the atmosphere in the league meetings is ridiculous, with all of the big 3 implying there is some hidden alliance with a rival when the clubs don't vote their way.

If Sporting wants to fight Benfica's apparent corruption (if not corruption, at least some shady stuff is going on), then fine, but involving other clubs and questioning their merit a bit too much.

I remember a decade ago, we were supposed to be Porto's puppets, we were in their pocket and always had ex-Porto players as managers. Then, during a period, we were Sporting's buddies, with good relations and lots of loans, including some vital ones when we won the cup in 2012. Now it's Benfica's turn. It's all a joke, small clubs are just used as an excuse for this or that when it's convenient to one of the big 3 or the other.

I still hate Jesus because of what happened a few years when he was still at Benfica, when he was caught saying we were a shit club that belonged in the second division. It was after a game Benfica won in the 95th minute with a very shady goal and he got involved in a fight with Edinho (I think) after the match. This was just the last straw.

I admire Sporting for not being caught in the middle of as much suspicious stuff as the other two, but the current lot you have running the club are just despicable and show no respect for anyone else. It's hard to keep that sympathy.

Sorry for the rant. I just watch my team almost every weekend work their asses off and this really pissed me off.

The press conferences of this guy are priceless
Big Carva, hopefully Swansea can stay out of relegation

He's so portuguese it hurts, even the way he structures his sentences... he uses portuguese slang and portuguese grammar and then directly translates individual words. I watched another one of his interviews in english a while back and instantly knew he was from the north, this one's even clearer.

Glad he's enjoying himself and that he's doing well despite his time with us not being good at all.

Tbf at that time it was impossible to do much better, but the way he mixes portuguese expressions in english and then starts telling stories about Quinito "Your cars are shit, your wifes are bad, 6:0 is great, Chauffer music please":lol::lol:

Carvalhal was the least of Sporting's problems on those days. The club was shambles and ran by amateurs. That coupled by the corrupt nature of our football would make it hard for any manager.

Good game from us, Dost really makes a big difference on our game and Gelson becomes a lot better when there's a threat in the box too.

International break then a very tough away game at Braga who are in great form.

Best game recently, must win at Braga or we are out. Miguel Cardoso to replace JJ? Don't joke with me.

Do you think Jesus will leave this season if Sporting do not win the title?

I am sure Mr Carvalho will do whatever it takes to win that title!

Bring back Marco Silva!!!

Jesus will fulfill his contract until the end. So it's one more year at least.

Marco Silva will never return to Sporting aslong as BdC is the President. And rightfully so. Between BdC and Silva, it's a no brainer. I don't want Marco anywhere near the club.

It will be interesting to see who they decide to replace Jesus with. ( I also think the cup win has bought him some time )

What was the reason for their falling out? He also won the cup for Sporting and was dismissed the following season.

Good win from Sporting game ended 2-0 but easily could have been a 5-0 win.

Excellent game from Gelson who got a goal and an assist (The goal was fantastic) and the team as a whole, next week is a must win game vs Braga.

Highlights of the game:

For what? He is a Lamp.

Marco Silva must have a pretty good agent because his name is constantly circulating in the English media and on the lips of English football fans.

I was hoping for his success at Hull as there were quite a few old-school English pundits bemoaning his appointment for overlooking their own hugely talented () British manager pool.

But now he's the flavour of the month (or months in his case) here , even though I could name quite a few better Portuguese managers and you guys could name even more.

Looking good. They need to bring back the green shorts for the next Euros though, these have been great but they're getting too similar to eachother.

Not a fan of both. The away one looks horrible. Maybe i can change my opinion when i see them in a match.

I actually think they look quite sleek and the away one looks class. Once again these are off images in an actual game I will make my final opinion but I quite like it. In contrast to our World Cup 2014 kits which were absolutely hideous and the Euro 2016 kit where the home kit was decent but that light green away was hideous I would say that these new kits are the best since Euro 2008 tbh.

Looks like a Pijama in daylight i dunno. I prefer Adidas kits.

It really is a matter of taste. I still think that the away kit is nothing special. And the number placement looks bad as seen in your pics.

Comparing to these, the current kits are rubbish.

This was by far the best national team kit (on the right):drool::drool::drool::drool:
It's from the 1930s and 1940s IIRC

These are by far the best ones IMO followed by the Euro 2004 kits and the Euro 2000.

I think this one was the best for recent years. The green shorts need to make a comeback.

So our center backs for this 2 friendlies are Alves, Fonte, Rolando and Luis Neto?

If the WC would start tomorrow with this squad I don't know if we could beat Iran, let alone Morocco, not even going to bother with Spain, how is is possible we let this happen?

We always had good center backs, our only problem was always related with developing strikers, later the goal keepers, and now even looking at our youth teams we don't have nothing special coming, Paulo Oliveira flopped, Semedo is in jail, Vezo isn't good enough for Valencia and Ruben Dias is a big what if for the future.

Scary prospects for our NT when Pepe and Ronaldo retire imho.

It was always going to be the case, I believe we've been overperforming for 20 years and that in a few years there will come a more natural period where we look like a NT from a country with 10 million people with several ups and downs. FIFA expanding the tournaments is fantastic news for us really.

As for the CBs... I hear Ricardo Carvalho still hasn't retired :wenger:

But seriously, I'm convinced it's going to be Fonte + Pepe for the World Cup and we'll be hoping they can replicate their form from 2 years ago. After that, I have no freaking idea, I really hope Pepe doesn't retire from the national team after the World Cup. He's going to be 37 in the next Euros but I don't care.

I agree center backs is our weakest point in our team but you are being a little dramatic. We cant beat morocco or Iran? give me a break we have more then enough quality to beat them and potentially pull of a draw vs Spain (MAYBE). Pepe will be a starter and he is quality and Ruben Dias looks to be a really decent prospect coming up even though I don't think he will start because he has not got a chance to prove himself. Nonetheless our defense consists of Guerreiro or Coentrao and Semedo or Cedric at left back and RB which is Solid. Our midfield and attack has plenty of quality young and experienced. We have a team more then capable of AT LEAST a quarter final berth and from there on out its all a gamble.

Dramatic no, just a realist.

Don't be suprised if we cannot beat them. Have you watched Morocco or Iran during the qualifiers? I did.

I see, we have a optimist here, don't come crying in a few months when we go against the wall. The type of football we play without good or very good centerbacks is a blow for us, hopefully I am wrong, you know if I am right you will have to pay me a Sagres after we loose no?

I will gladly pay you a sages if you are right ahah. On a serious note I think you are underestimating Portugal as well I felt we had a very solid qualifying campaign some good football was played and I believe we have enough quality to beat morocco an Iran. My prediction is a second place finish in the group and our ceiling would be the quarters as I said.

If we didn't had problems with the CB's I would say to you without any sort of arrogance we would probably win at least vs Iran and in worst case scenario a draw vs Morocco, maybe even a draw vs Spain.

As it is today I have serious doubts after the second game we will have more than 1 or 2 points, hopefully I am wrong, crucial that Pepe recovers, while Fonte really needs to improve, don't see Santos starting Ruben Dias without having the chance to try him before the competition.

WC is still far away, there will be some stars - I'm talking in general and not specific of Portugal - who will get injured and others who will have to do a lot of work to be fit for the WC. I think that Fernando Santos won't change very much if you gonna compare with the EURO2016 and Confederations 2017 squad. Most teams have some quality and if Portugal isn't capable to get second place in the group then they have nothing to search on that stage. What I know of football is that you have to have CB that can play together. Pepe is a sure start when fit. Fonte China, Rolando (not a fan) are not my choices but I don't have to decide.

***

Top 4 won their games so nothing changed except the points total.

****

Sporting had a good game against Rio Ave, but they did it again, miss a lot of chances and decide the game too late like they did in Plzen. It went easier than expected because of the way Rio Ave plays, it is one of the teams that plays positive football. Most small football teams in Portugal play Mourinho tactics negative football surely in the games against the bigger teams.
