Portuguese Football 2017/2018

I follow Portimonense as you well know...even been to a game there this season. By the way what a result for them this weekend. :D
Christ its true, I told you they won't be relegated, after all only 2 go down, for me its a stupid rule, but its just one of many in Portugal must be said.

Yeah I don't watch every game but try to watch the big ones like Lisbon derby and Porto v either of them. Watched a fair bit of Braga-Sporting at the weekend aswell.

I'm portuguese and I can barely even watch these games due to how boring they usually are. No idea why you'd do that to yourself :lol:

Going to tell you a secret, lately don't even follow our games, let alone Benfica or Porto, last time I remember I watched from us was the extra time vs Plzen, just follow the scores, fed up with everything there, not even going to bother with Atletico, I know its bad support but can't even listen more to JJ.

Yes credit where credits due you had more confidence than me.
I like their website and their them and us attitude. In fact I'm going to sign off each post I do on this thread with their slogan. :lol:

"We are Algarve, We are Portimão, We are Portimonense"

:lol: Yes portuguese clubs do have some old slogans and musics, remember a little bit some clubs from Brazil must be said, don't know if Farense or Olhanense fans are happy with that, sad to see fans in Algarve don't bother with their clubs.

There is a small selection of British ex pats who follow whichever team in the Algarve is doing well so it's currently Portimonense. Wouldn't have thought the local fans from Faro or Olhao would be too too enamoured with their local rivals recent success.

"Somos Algarve, Somos Portimão, Somos Portimonense"

I bet on football as a hobby. Bet 365 website shows the league live.

Yes Portugese league is quite low scoring so have had a few big wins as the Classic games always seem to finish 0-0 or 1-1.

Nearly had one come off tonight. After early goal put 30 quid on it staying 1-0 so not too far off. Think odds were 8/1 at the time.

:nono:

Sometimes I feel like doing it too but have to go through bad times so when the good times come it feels much better. We'll probably going to get beaten badly by Atleti but it wouldn't be the first time we surprise a few people. Missing a pointless league game is one thing but the Atleti game is a must watch.

Ok. Sometimes I was confused about your postings but now I found the reason in the quote.

I watch the games of Sporting, and till one month ago I tried to watch the games of the other 2. In small games the other 2 are performing better then Sporting, I think benfica is since the game against Sporting the team who has improved the most of the 3. Porto is very dominant but are having troubles lately if they don't score first. Sporting has to stereotype football. I miss teamplay they depend too much on Gelson, Bruno and Bas.

I can't imagine JJ to be our coach next season unless In one or other way they manage to win the EL but don't think that that will happen.

It was gradual on me, I started to understand we were going nowhere after that game vs Benfica, but for me games like Estoril, then Plzen for me were just enough to say I don't feel any interest to watch us play, I know this isn't good support, but it isn't based on results, simply bad football.

I feel the same about the Portuguese NT. Don't worry with JJ, I think he will leave at the end of the season, unless he pulls a miracle in the Europa League or wins the Portuguese Cup.

Good to know I'm not the only one disenchated with the portuguese league in the late few years. I still watch extended highlights of the games, but I sometimes even "forget" that Benfica is playing :D

Our football is going downhill and it's mainly a mentality problem, which in my opinion is even more important than the backstage theatrics (does this word exists in english? ).

We need managers with balls to play good football, to modernize the league. We still see old school methods like man-2-man marking in the big three and all the "big 3" have similar solutions when attacking: to cross, cross and cross.

There are differences in the game plan withouth the ball, but when with posession, all big three will cross whenever they can, instead of trying to do a decent build that will place the players in front of the keeper.

We were heading forward with managers like Silva, Fonseca, Villas Boas (despite having failed outside Portugal, he is a very good manager. He just lacks leadership skills and needs a strong assistant like he had at Porto), Jardim, etc.

But now we seem to go back to the crossing overload football style. It's a regression.

Plzen away was like against benfica in the first year of JJ. They scored and we weren't effective. Such games happen. We lost there 2-1 after extra time but Plzen had nothing to say if we had won the game 2 - 4 without extra time.

I hope that even the cup of Portugal isn't enough to keep him in charge. Don't say that he is a bad coach but he isn't either the coach who brings that little bit of extra. And the system won't let him win. Keeping him in charge would be a big mistake of our president. The president likes to put pressure on the players in every modality but he shouldn't do that with the football players because they are climbing a mountain to win the title because of the things that happen behind the scenes.

Sporting would be better of if they just tried to win the next game and if we we're still in the running in May then you could be thinking and start talking about winning the title. Coaches can say a lot but this year we were never the best team in beating the weaker opponents, Porto was from the start the team who did it best and now I think those who control everything in Portugal are the best in beating weaker opponents.

I don't understand why you are always talking about the 0/18 in the CL and that they are now in front. Those 2 things are total different things. If we compare it with England, José is capable of winning a domestic cup but to beat Man City in the PL or win the CL that would be a miracle.

JJ looks tired I think he is starting to understand that winning at benfica is a lot easier then winning at Sporting. I think he even would have more chances to win at Braga then at Sporting because of the games outside of the pitch. He was robbed of the title in his first season.

:confused: Don't talk about rivals in this thread.

Everything you said is more or less what I feel, looking at the current level of managers it is hard to feel excited, and the style of football you are talking is what we currently have in the NT under Santos.

Instead total football we have total crap or total crosses, sorry but for me its just hard to watch the League or even the NT, don't want to watch us vs Spain, it will be painfull unless we change everything we have been doing in the last 5 years or more.

Well, the NT has a little excuse, because having a prolific header like Ronaldo is kinda tempting to cross a lot into the box. But even so, that kind of football is a total crap. You only need to get a team that is decently drilled on the defensive process that you will not get much space to cross, and you'll have to cross from 3/4 which is usually a piece of cake for the defenders / goalkeeper.

Awfull news not just for the NT but for Porto and the player, don't like this type of injuries even for rival players.

Probably Santos will choose between Neves or Manuel Fernandes, hopefully not André Gomes or Adrien, they were just awfull vs Netherlands.

3 month post.

Sporting's meltdown today has been hilarious.

Nothing to do with Benfica though. BdC would be the perfect president if he could shut his mouth, today's been a circus but it's better this way than the constant apathy about mediocrity.

Well, if both roads lead to not winning the title...

But he only got to be president because he couldn't shut his mouth, that's the BdC contradiction.

I think it's important to remember where the club was heading when he started out.

If both roads lead to not winning the title I'd rather Sporting be healthy financially than owned by Jorge Mendes and corrupt. He's an idiot that talks too much and what happened today was stupid but he's right very often too and he has done well for the club overall. I find it funny seeing Benfica and Porto fans giving their opinion on it considering who their presidents are.

Fair enough. On the other hand, everyone laughs at your president...

Not everyone. I'm with the president with this one. Players are paid to play and follow instructions, not to rebel publicly against your boss. I mean, what the feck? BDC always been very vocal in social media not just football but also in other sports and this is the first time players decide to be more important than the club.

With this behavior they basically said feck off to the fans. They have no right to be upset about a critique when they underperformed. Their job is to show the President is wrong on the field. Where were these players when they lost against minor clubs these season?

I wish my president would be more present and transparent with the fans. Or at least someone from the club and not FJM who just deals with the e-mails issue.

Wouldn't it be great if sporting didn't even qualify for european competitions. hahaha.

Anyway, hard game tomorrow. Hope we can win just to make everything even more hilarious.Meltdowns everywhere. If benfica lose tomorrow i think it would be really funny too. Got to love Nos Circus League

Most people don't know what they're talking about to be fair. They see his rants on facebook and think that's that when that's just an irrelevant part of what he does.

He was wrong to do what he did and so were the players. I'm sure they'll figure it out, not worried at all about this and I think it's better to watch turmoil in the club after bad results than the apathy of previous years. It should have been done behind closed doors, that's the only problem I have with it.

Hopefully the players give an answer on the pitch now.

I live in Almada so I've always had a soft spot for Vitória, hope you guys can upset tomorrow. Ideally for me Porto would win it, so my fellow academista Conceição would win.

Oh c'mon if you are the president of the club you can't go on facebook call your players spoiled brats.

I also laugh regarding clubs who have Presidents known as drug dealers, do you?

I have backed BDC for a long time but after this I just cant. You do NOT attack your players publicly like that period. These things should have been said and taken care of behind closed doors as professionals and not publicly accused players of forcefully getting yellows and for missing open nets and made mistakes. Is what he said correct? yes I believe so BUT he reacted as a FAN and not as a PRESIDENT that is his issue. I thank him for bringing Sporting out of the abyss and bringing us back to relevance but I don't think he is fit to lead us to that next step. In all my years of being a Sporting fan I have never seen this not even with Godinho. Bruno needs to leave facebook and stop acting like a child. The players had EVERY right To do what they did for being publicly attacked by their OWN president. Any good leader knows these things are done in private. When even a club legend and icon like Rui Patricio who never caused the club any problems gets involved you know its serious and this is SERIOUS. Now all the players are suspended and as of now will be using our B team. The season is over we will get 4th place eliminated from Europa and Eliminated by Porto. In the end Bruno only has 2 ways of taking things no if and or but: Either he publicly apologizes OR he steps down. Because I reckon if he is still their come the summer many of these players will not want to play under his direction. This is a joke and is sadly the shambles people are used to seeing our club in. My stance is with the players on this one. He managed to turn a whole team against him.

Side note: the fact that I saw people on here ask for JJ head and blaming him after Coates gave Atletico the first goal and then Mathieu the second followed by a Montero open net miss says a lot about our fans and their understanding of football.

Of course he was wrong but the players shouldn't react the way they reacted, at least in public, but I agree, unless BDC changes its behaviour, or he delegates the professional football to a strong football director, who rules everything related with the team, signings (meaning someone like JJ leaves or has to work under different conditions) or there are no conditions.

I would like to see someone with a more balanced profile like Carlos Vieira as President, not the return of the old regime. But its always funny to see coments saying this or that when we know the scum and corruption that also are Presidents of other clubs, but I will not mention their names here to not polute this thread.

The players had every right the moment the president attacked them publicly not just as players but as people absolutely unacceptable. BDC is sinking this ship fast and strong.

That is also true. But I ask the head of JJ because:

* I don't see attacking paterns, just ball to Gelson, Bruno or Ribeiro and hope that they will make the difference with their talent and put another player in a good scoring position;
* Our games haves been like shit and I don't see the hand of the coach to improve;
* His ego is too big for what he performs;
* I don't like his intervention in games; must say against top teams his starting tactics have been good but when the other coach intervenes then he can't react;
* he has had 3 years so time for change;
* Don't like his communication and psycological approach of players.

So conclusion I don't believe in him anymore but I don't judge him on his paycheck.

For me after this all, Bruno needs to step down or a make a appoligy. But I think to leave is the best thing because his character isn't suitable for a person of that function and the next step that Sporting has to make.

He will be remembered as the president

* who took Sporting that was almost bankrupt and gave it air. I think the financial problems aren't solved yet but from what I hear they are very well under controll.

* who made with support of Porto public how benfica became tetra champions vouchers, emails and padres. Someting of a upgraded version of Calciopoli.

* who gave me and I think a lot of other Sportinguistas back hope;

* who increased the modalities (volley is back, other new modalities) and booked some successes with Atletics, Handball, Futsal, ... .

* under which presidency Sporting got a new home namely Pavilhao Joao Rocha;

* who sold some players for great amount of euros and not for euromendes like a lot of the transfers of benfica.

And then I'm probably forgetting a lot of things of what he did good.

He was the president that Sporting needed. We we're going the same way as Glasgow Rangers and now we're alive and kicking.

I agree but at the same time people expect us to play at the level of 15/16 and its simply not possible we have a different team to then. Even so we have just as many points as that season and are in Every competition and its April. No other club in Portugal has played more games then us this season ever. He clearly knows what he is doing for us to be in all fronts in April. With that said is he perfect? no Has he made crucial mistakes? yes At the same time there are players in the team which he did not want he needs to build his own team thats what he did at Benfica and that is what brought him success. The issue is he spoiled us the fans because we have not seen Sporting at this level in over 10 years so now more is expected of us thanks to him. Lets not hide from the fact that ever since he has arrived we have been more " feared" then ever before because we are guaranteed to compete. With that said if he leaves or does not leave at this point is indifferent to me maybe a new coach can do better who knows. All I know is he is judged so harshly its disgusting. People will use anything against him. Like the Atletico game we would have drawn 0-0 which is a great result has 2 experienced center backs not messed up on their own and monsters missing an open net. Yet the moment we conceded in 23 seconds because of Coates someone said " JJ needs to leave I hope we lose " Something along those lines. Like come on guys. But its true us Sporting fans are very different then others.

I apologize for the rants im just so frustrated at what is going on with OUR club and its getting to me.

"SPORTING TU NUNCA VAIS ACABAR TU VAIS VENCER PODES CRER PORQUE A NOSSA FORCA E BRUTAL"

Jeez what a soft penalty for Benfica. There was a little bit of contact but then the player fell down about two seconds later.

Surprised that wasn't referred to VAR.

Absolute disgrace. As usual.

Same shit over and over and over again, another title with an asterisk next to it. Fitting that it is going to go to the worst team in CL history too, it shows how rotten our football is.

Clear dive, touches his shoulder, takes two steps and then falls... not even VAR can stop it
