Portuguese Football 2017/2018

Congrats @Arruda!

It will take a while for me not to be bitter at how we threw away points throughout the season but at least it wasn't Benfica who won it. No penta is a lot better than the alternative

Thanks man, now win your last game. It will be better for everyone.

Not happy especially because I think we could have done more this season, but I think the team who deserved it most is champion. If it was not Sporting then i can live with Porto so now we won't hear anymore for a long time that they want to win the penta. Hopefully we can take second place but I expect a big suitcase next week not that it is important, we should reach our goal for that game and win it.

Congratulations to the Porto fans.

A laugh turns on my face if I see the reactions after the game from the Benfica entourage.
I think all correct Sporting fans can admit that benfica was better yesterday. But the first part of our goals was not to concede and the second was to score at least one. First part we did with a Rui Patricio who saved one or 2 almost sure goals and the second part we didn't play well enough or made wrong decisions (Bas) to materialize.

Hypocrite of the benfica entourage to say that the referee and VAR screwed up in favour of us yesterday.

Today it is handball day.

Congrats @Arruda

Someone please clarify if Sporting should be in 2nd place right now? It's my understanding that it goes down to head-to-head and Sporting has the away goal?

Sporting is 3rd at the moment because when the competition is running the tiebreakers are points and goal difference but when the competition has ended the tiebreaker is points, h2h (Sporting has the away goal versus benfica) and then goal difference.

I see, so a win next against Maritimo and Sporting has 2nd place regardless of what Benfica get upto. :D

Congrats @Arruda. Once again i thought we blew a big chance to win the league. Porto with virtually no investment due to FFP and Benfica with a horrible year. No wins against Benfica or Porto. Dropping stupid points against Setúbal or Moreirense. The usual lack of atitude. Deserved title for Porto. If we win the cup, it will be another year with Jesus and we all know what that means.

:lol::lol::lol:

Even Patricio lets us down.

Bye bye JJ, couldn't care less about the cup final. Just want him gone.

Maritimo are an absolute disgrace, timewasting for no reason. In a normal league there would be 20 minutes of added time.

So much hype around guys like Bruno Fernandes, Gelson and William but they're nowhere near good enough to play for a better team than us. We got lucky we scored a few undeserved last minute goals throughout the season or we would have finished 4th

That camera just panning on Jesus during injury time was brilliant, someone needs to make a YT montage of it.

I'm guessing Sporting would've made CL with a win?

Yes, just another standard Sporting season. We're going to win the cup final now so we can get our hopes up going into next season and then we'll underperform like we always do.

So tired of this...

Sporting being sporting. Tabula Rasa in football. First of all the coach has to go, second president has to leave the football, he needs to be president and not technical director or team builder or what is his role.

We need the president hes the only one in the last few years who defends the club and not the banks.

I wonder if Geraldes will get a chance at Sporting next year. I've really enjoyed watching him this year in the limited viewings of Rio Ave I've had. Joao Novais always stood out alongside him for me, too.

Seen this on Reddit just now. Supposedly Jorge Jesus, Bas Dost, Rui Patricio and others were attacked after Sporting ultras (hate that term) stormed the training ground...

Dost...

Dressing room after they wrecked it...

Pretty mental. What's going on with them?

If what's being reported is true then it's one of the darkest days in the history of the club.

Pretty sure that Dost image isn't from today and I still don't know what happened exactly.

Hard to believe real Sporting fans would physically assault the players. Especially a grear professional like Bas Dost. Can't see how Sporting will get out of this mess tbh.

It is!

This is what you get when you have a small minority who instead liking football just want to behave like militias. Unfortunately you just need to read the last few weeks in Sporting Forum where is quite common to read from a few ones "Vamos apertar com eles".

If you pay peanuts you get monkeys, after today if something happens for me football in Portugal is dead.

It's been dead for a long time now. No quality, corruption, terrible refereeing, timewasting like it doesn't happen anywhere else in the world, empty stadiums, rotten fan culture... what happened has been building up for a long time and it's not just in Sporting.

I'm at the point where I barely care how this situation unfolds now. Every single person associated with the club and with portuguese football should be embarassed not just with what happened today but with the state of our football.

These are people that follow Bruno de Carvalho blindly, he has been openly against the players, only a matter of time before some idiots acted on it.

The fans have to remove him and his ultra supporters from the club.

After this shit he has to go, it's too toxic now. He's done great work but what an absolute moron, can't keep his mouth shut. If he could handle himself publicly he'd be a perfect president but he always needs to create more and more drama. Some of it was necessary but it's crossed the line now.

No idea what will happen now, from the president, to the coach, to the players and to the fans. I just know it needs to be fixed and we need to be in a healthy position to start next season with everyone pulling in the same direction.

Can anyone explain the reason of this attack?

There's been a major division between the president and the players/coach in recent weeks after our president criticized them. A few morons sided with the president and attacked the players today.

I hope they slapped the hell out of Wendel

How did that happen? Portugal's greatest footballing achievement was only two years ago. That should really herald a new love for the game.

Sounds like a bunch of morons went at it. Some reports saying poor Bas Dost needed 6 stitches after being attacked with a belt, Jorge Jesus was headbutted, half of the team attacked. Five days before the cup final.

The country is absolutely mad for football, that's never been a problem. If anything people take it more seriously than they should.

Everything surrounding portuguese football is full of toxicity with teams acusing eachother of bribing opponents or referees and meanwhile the quality of the league is getting worse and worse.

How do you think it can all be fixed? What’ the cure? Is it as simple as overhauling the top guys who are allowing this to happen or worse taking part in it or issues are much more widespread?

I'm guessing every player can now leave that club on a free after this?
Its a prime example of an unsafe work environment, what tribunal would rule against them?

The president tried to unorthodoxly alienate the coach and the coaching staffs (my guess trying to pressure him to resign so they don't have to pay him the contract if they're to sack him). Player sided with the coach. President went publicly turning the fan against the players & coach (the fans ain't taking a liking to the coach to begin with). Some went ultra and here we are

They are talking about that in Portugal but the issue is not the clubs fault 50 people invaded the training grounds, let’ see whats going to happen and if the players really leave the club then I just hope the sporting fans do a witch hunt for that “claque”.

I don't see how it can be fixed, it's what the people like. People like drama more than they like football. Our football shows here never talk about football, they talk about referees and whatever is going on between coaches or presidents of the big clubs.

It's a cultural problem, the presidents of the big clubs make it worse so a change there would be good but I really don't think things will change.

As for the quality of the league, it's gone down already and I believe it will continue going in that direction given how much more money the top 5 leagues get.

He needed 6 stitches.
He's said this about it: "I have no words for this. I never saw this coming, what happened here is unbelievable. We're all very shocked, it really was a very threatening situation. This is a drama for everyone."

61 goals in 61 games and this is what you get as a thank you. If I were Dost I would put in a transfer request immediately.

Can't believe they attacked Dos given his goalscoring record. Someone like William Carvalho has been awful all year since his aborted move to West Ham not that I'm advocating attacking players of course.

Can only think Bas Dost took exception to them coming in and had a go back.

Even so fans are not supposed to enter the training facility in number like this without permission. No excuse even if the players did verbally exchange with them.

Not so surprising, tbh. Most Sporting fans I know they mostly agree with the ultras, saying that the players should had only listened and not reacted, due to they poor atitudes on the last game.

Thinking about it, maybe it's for the best that he doesn't get said chance!

It happens a lot abroad. In Italy I'm pretty sure ultras of Lazio and Roma have gone into training grounds to confront the players after bad defeats.

Makes me chuckle when clubs over here blame bad games on hostile crowds. Most premier league ground are tea parties compared to what you get abroad and training ground are like Fort Knox to gain access.
