Portuguese Football 2017/2018

Didn't even see on the first viewing that the ball hit Jimenez hand which stopped the clearence and put it towards the other Benfica player.

Everytime i watch the result on flashscore and it's a draw, they get a penalty in extra time and they are winning.

Next week title game between benfica and porto who won their games.

benfica again a laughable penalty - not so worse as that of 2 years ago against Pacos de Ferreira - but because of such decisions in the last years benfica is now treta champions . Porto won also but I didn't see the game.

But most of the attention went to Sporting game that booked a natural 2-0 win after the atletico game. But I don't know if it was a happy night after what happened during and after the game with our president. For me it's game over for Bruno de Carvalho, I think we couldn't have had a better president after godino, but it's clearly now that his time to leave has come and that we need a new leader.

Hopefully he will realise that - I don't think that he will see it like that - and hopefully the socios will choose the right person for the job. Please a strong figure like Bruno who loves Sporting like Bruno does - is that possible? - and not just someone who is there to be seen and for the media attention. So no types like madeira rodrigues or the persons who where in charge before Bruno.

To sum it up, Sporting in a crisis and next 2 weeks will be important for the clubs with games as Sporting - Atletico (EL), benfica - porto and Sporting - porto (return semi final cup) on the agenda.

Man of the week in portuguese football Bruno but not for the positive way and that in a week that CR7 scored a screamer and José won at Man City.

I really hope Porto wins this season, but it's amazing how they fall apart in the second half of the season.

I was wondering, what happened to Portuguese teams in Europe?

There is no shame for Sporting to go out to Atletico, but Benfica and Porto suffered heavy defeats in the CL. Just a few years ago, Porto played really good football winning the Europa and Benfica reached the final 2 times in this decade, beating Juventus in the process. Any reasonable explanation for their weakness in Europe?

Not that German teams are doing any better, mind :(

The only difference this season was Benfica awfull performance, Porto went into Champions League last 16, Braga into last 16 of Europa League, and Sporting last 8.

We are in 7th place of UEFA rankings based on performances from last 5 seasons, and this season we are in 7th. If you look at the coountries we have ahead us: Spain, England, Italy, Germany, France, Russia, they all have higher revenues, can pay higher transfer fees, even Russia can pay higher wages (no Gazprom in Portugal).

I think we will never catchup with Russia, unless we start to accept we need foreign investment in the clubs, but if you know Portugal the reaction of football fans to someone being the owner of a club wouldn't be positive to say the least.

So the only solution has to be buying, developing and selling, knowing if any club wants to win something at European level, only in the Europa League, reaching the QF at the Champions League probably is the maximum a portuguese club can do, and if that happens they will probably loose those players in the next season.

There are no secrets.

Herrera

Last minute winner at Benfica. Porto have just pretty much won the league, can't see them fecking it up from now on

Hopefully. This Benfica dominance has to stop.

We've fecked it up enough times for me to feel safe already. We might still need your lot to give us a hand.

I don’t think you’ll need to. 3 wins and 1 draw in the last 4 games guarantees you the title.

Now if we win all our games we’ll be in the Champions League next season which would be important for us. This whole season just feels weird to be honest, feels like every team has been constantly trying to throw the title away.

Totally forgot about our direct advantage over them. Nice.

This felt like Kelvin all over again. At least this time it wasn't Liedson giving the assist

Ok Porto went for the draw and won it. I think a draw was a fair result but this result is for Sporting who won 3 - 4 at Belenenses. Not game over yet but Porto won the game they needed to win. This week semi final return leg between Sporting and Porto let's see what happens there. Could it still be a good end of the season for Sporting?

Big game tonight in Portuguese football

Sporting vs Porto second leg of the Portuguese cup semifinal.

If anyone has time on their hands they should tune in should be a cracker.

Well this got good. Excellent implementation of VAR by the way.

No matter what happens next, this game just confirms we've lost the title to a team that's not better than us. Same as 2 years ago.

We could go on to win the cup but this season hurt.

We did it, it took us penalties again but we're in the final of the cup. Aves is our opponent. It's been a true fight and at the end Sporting was the luckier at the penalties. Happy.

Against my expectations at the beginning of the season Abel is doing a great job with Braga.

I am not even talking about the number of points, its really the way they play, I might even say comparing budget/individual quality/improvement of players during the season he has done a better job than JJ, Conceição and Vitória.

Lets see how he develops or if this is just a 1 season wonder.

Still think when JJ leaves we should hire a foreign manager, the ones who are working in the league try to play always the same way, we need something different imo.

JJ isn't leaving at the end of the season. Probably some players are. I'm in favour of a coach who tries to play always the same way. We need automatism but I hope that it will be an coach who can implement a B and even a C plan. When you play bigger teams especially outside of Portugal then having a different tactical approach can be done.

Benfica's luck has well and truly run out....were leading v Tondela, lost 3-2 so second successive home loss.

Porto's title to lose again.

I'm gay for Bruno Fernandes.

One step closer to CL football now, although I'm still dreaming about Porto somehow fecking it all up. They need 4 points out of 3 games so they've 99.99% won it

Benfica are geniunely crap right now but we can easily bottle it. Sporting-Benfica next week will decide it.
I originally thought you need to beat them next week, but now you have the added bonus that a 0-0 will suffice.

Good weekend normally it's Sporting who f*cks it up before the big game, this year apperently not. Let's see if we can do it next weekend. Porto now needs a disaster to loose the title.

Sporting for the CL place then? @Peyroteo @SCP
We need to beat them next week, or a draw leaves us in the situation where we have to win in Madeira (land of Cris ;))

Knowing us the most certain thing will happen is a defeat next week and finishing behind Braga in the last game. :D

Lets see, sorry about yesterday @Token Sheet .

No problem.

Derby tonight, Sporting win and we go to the Champions League. Benfica win they go to the Champions League. If it's a draw, Porto win the league.

Thankfully I'm not in Porto this weekend :wenger:

In Coimbra and I'm going to Académica-Cova da Piedade tonight, huge game and it's going to be packed. It's Queima das Fitas weekend with Academica fighting to go up, going to be insane. Briooooosa! :D

I'm going tomorrow to Coimbra. I hope to go there with a smile in the face, but i'm feeling Benfica will lose in the last minutes of the match

Well, Academica completely fecked that up. Another year in the second division for them which is a shame, Santa Clara will now go up more likely than not. Nice to see the Azores have a team up but Academica would have definitely been better.

Nacional also return to the first division, looking forward to all the postponed matches due to the fog...

Hopefuly you are right :D

Manuel Fernandes wins the Russian league with Lokomotiv. A good later career season for him.

Eder with the late winner to give them the title too

They both still have a chance to go to the World Cup

porto new champions after Sporting and benfica draw.

Congrats @Arruda!

It will take a while for me not to be bitter at how we threw away points throughout the season but at least it wasn't Benfica who won it. No penta is a lot better than the alternative
