England Discussion | Finish 4th

What are you talking about? The things you said can be said about most footballers. Most of them have incredible drive and will to constantly improve.

Yeah and you win Balon dor by being the best in the world. By winning biggest trophies. Lets see Kane move to Madrid and show the same drive to be the best.

Many don't - give them a fat pay cheque and they're content … or more concerned with looking cool and amassing social media followers.

Nothing to worry about, as Pat Nevin said;
If England play against that Sweden team, 99 times out of 100, they will beat them.

"Experts". Give my dog that title instead.

This is a silly argument and I'm not even going to get into the semantics of it but I think that does a great disservice to Ronaldo tbh. Ronaldo has unbelievable force of will and drive but is also an insanely talented talented player and has been ever since he was a spotty teen.

Really glad we got through a shootout and I liked Southgate's responses after the match about not underestimating Sweden in the next round. And I don't think we will, whether we end up getting through or not.

How am I doing disservice to Ronaldo? I've watched him become the best. Get overtaken by Messi only to come back stronger and become the greatest player in CL ever through his sheer obsession with being the best.

Saying Kane on that level is fecking laughable. Don't get me wrong, I think Kane is a great, great player and his career trajectory has been quite extraordinary but Ronaldo is on GOAT level. Kane has a long, long way before we can start comparing him in any aspects to Ronaldo.

We need an actual midfield and we need to create chances for Kane.

Get Loftus-Cheek on instead of Alli or Lingard and get someone alongside Henderson (though anyone other than Dier who is the worst footballer I've seen in a good while) so we don't have a gaping hole in the midfield every time we press and it gets bypassed.

This is a very likable England team for a change and a manager that you want to see succeed. In addition to that they actually have some resolve and showed some real character and cojones. Very happy for them.

Bring on the Swedes!

Yeah, I think in the semi's (if we beat Sweden) we are likely to face Croatia and whoever is in a potential final will have a top midfield. We need an extra man in there. I wish Rashford had scored a winner so he'd be in with a look to start.

I'm blinkered when it comes to Kane? He's the best striker in the world, bar none (and he's only going to get better) … and what's more, it's those who deny it who are the ones who are the blinkered, largely because he doesn't play for their club.

I'm not saying Kane isn't great. He's the best number 9 in the world but you tend to over rate players yourself. I supposed it's OK, I did it with Rashford. Nothing wrong with being excited when it's a player that players for you jersey.

All you can try and do is compare Kane to a 24 year old Ronaldo. Agreed that Kane has a long way to go to be seen anywhere near that level but he could certainly be an all time great English player if he carries on like this.

Because I don't think it is correct to say Ronaldo only got to that stage by hard work. As I said, he is incredibly hard working, has a ridiculous mentality but is also supremely talented. That was all I was saying really.

Anyway, can we not make every thread into some Spurs thread (not blaming this for you btw or directing it at you).

Its a great night, I enjoyed it and let's hope we keep it going for as long as possible!

How shit was Lingard today? You try not to change a winning team but he really should be dropped next match.

Next match on BBC!

We need width in the team. Why are we trying to play down the centre when we got no decent playmakers in the team?

If we insist on playing 3 at the back then line up like how Chelsea did in 16/17 season with a 3-4-3. But width is needed. We don’t get enough crosses in the box for Kane.

Kane is a great player, but don't underestimate past great England players, Stanley Matthews, Greaves, Charlton, Keegan, and the list could go on.

Wasn’t all that impressed with Sweden against Denmark.

Organised, for sure. But plenty of teams have proven adept when they have men behind the ball. So they're not unique in that sense.

Their finishing leaves a lot to be desired.

It could be a slog, but England can navigate it.

EDIT: Switzerland, my bad.

24 year old Ronaldo was the best player in the world. Instrumental in 3 leagues in a row and Champions League. Without him we wouldn't have won all those trophies. I have no doubt Kane will reach legendary status by the time he's retiring but Ronaldo is firmly alongside Maradona, Pele, Messi, Beckenbauer imo and he got there but being obsessed with being the best. He's not the most naturally talented player so..

I didn't end up watching the penalties. Too much for me to take. I was listening to loud music on my headphones to prevent myself from hearing the reaction from the neighbours.

Thanks feck we're through lads. Thanks feck

Sterling, Lingard and a potentially injured but not quite sure Dele are not pulling their weight at the moment. Need a lot more quality from those three tbh.

England scraped past a Colombia team without Rodriguez. Sweden are very solid defensively and woeful finishers. England are slight favourites.

Yes, the last time we won a knockout tie at any tournament until today

Technically it's a draw, decided by penalties, lolz

Thought we were lucky. Key Colombia pen hit the bar.

Game was awful. We're very average.

I'll take it.

Dier will probably start just for the winning penalty but his heading and strength might actually work fine against Sweden.

The difference between this England team and the England teams that have gone home early of late, is a pint of larger.

We're poor. We're not good. We're average.

Our goals in this tournament.

1-0 vs Tunisia - Corner
2-1 vs Tunisia - Corner

1-0 vs Panama - Corner
2-0 vs Panama - Penalty
3-0 vs Panama - Lingard from outside the box
4-0 vs Panama - Free kick
5-0 vs Panama - Penalty
6-1 vs Panama - Deflection

1-0 vs Colombia - Penalty

Lots of goals which is great. But only one of those has come from open play without taking a deflection.

We're creating little. Very few one on ones vs Belgium. Very few one on ones vs Colombia. Very few one on ones vs Tunisia (after first 20 mins).

And yet we're through to the Quarters.

We've won a penalty shoot out

It's coming home.

ENGERLAND. ENGERLAND. ENGERLLAAAAND

Equally Sweden won’t be impressed with England tonight. So let’s not be arrogant.

We have a shit record against them in competitive football. Our play from open play is average at best. One wonder goal from Lingard and a deflected goal Kane didn’t know anything about is our open play goals.

Oh I'm not saying he's not supremely talented but he's nowhere near as talented as say Neymar, Queresema, heck even Robinho. Jury is out on Neymar but look what happened to the other two for all their talents. And those three names are just from the top of my head. Imagine how many immensly talented players you could name that played in the past but couldn't hold a candle to Ronaldo.

Suppose that works for Kane as well. But again, I was just pointing out that he has to reach Ronaldo levels before Glaston starts coming out with such statements, seeing as Ronaldo is still going pretty strong and is probably still the best player in the world at the age of 33.

Anyway, I'm done discussing this as well. Shouldn't have bit in the first place. Congratulations and enjoy your night as I'm not English. :)

Luck over skill every single time. Good that Lingard got his shit spell out of the way. If he's this bad in the first half against Sweden then get him off at half time. This is where Southgate has to respond better.

Sterling's pace and wilyness is just too important for him to be left out.

Doesn't matter how bad England will be when they win it all.....since they'll only be the worst nation to win a major international tournament since the last one...in 2016.

England haven't kept a clean sheet in the tournament either yet.

People really do dislike the English team a lot don’t they. Saying they didn’t deserve it, saying that people shouldn’t be happy after that win etc etc.

This team actually has a lot of likeable players.

I can see how the constant frothing of the mouth waiting for England to fail can get annoying to actual England fans. It seems to go way beyond the banter we’ve seen for Spain etc and go more into the territory of pure dislike.

Pat Nevin is a talentless Gobsh1te even by former Scotland international now-turned-pundit standards. The BBC Scotland edition of Final Score is so awful it should count as a crime against humanity.

Club loyalty aside Lingard had a good game he just tired towards the end and he dipped. Would have been madness to take him off at half time when Sterling and Dele were both considerably worse.

Every attack England had involved Lingard.

Ah man, we'll probably balls it up against Sweden's wall and go out, but it's so good to be positive in a major tournament for once. I can't remember the last time we didn't have to face one of France, Germany, Portugal in the knockouts, or end up with Italy and Uruguay in the group stages.

Of course that does indicate more our level than anything else, because if we were on the other side of the bracket I'd give us no chance to make it far, but it's nice to be able to hope.

This might sound arrogant and misguided but can England potentially rest some players here or at least give Rashford and a few others a starting spot to conserve energy?

It might be a bit of a risk but I reckon it'd be a calculated one.
