I obviously don't agree with Braverman on much but her letter is correct on the law, to my understanding. Any innocuous symbol or item could become harassing in context, and that isn't the same as saying it's offensive generally.

I work with contractors and big companies and no sooner is there a sniff of Government funds available, the daily rates requested leap by 30%. The workers, the agents, the MROs, the EPCs, the consultants, the vendors all spike their prices.

Nah, if you approach people who you believe are Jewish it may be considered a crime.

Like if you wear a galatasaray shirt at Elland Road, something that is entirely within your rights to do can become harassing or alarming. You wear it in Leeds city centre, could be unwise but likely legal, anywhere else in the country completely innocuous.

As I said if someone is speaking out on behalf of Israel and you brought out the flag, I'd also say that it's likely to be ok because it's countering speech. If it's harassing private individuals, this isn't America, we don't have the 1st amendment here.

Yes, Hopefully the politicians will put into law the transparency needed to scrutinize them and make them accountable. Also I hope they pass a law where they force themselves to not be able to have another job while in parliament and so on

I don’t think you’re saying this as explicitly as it’s written. But we should be very clear that there are plenty of Jewish people, and non Jewish Israeli folks, that are pro Palestine.

The Palestine flag shouldn’t be banned. Your Galatasaray shirt in Leeds analogy was spot on.

An MP defecting from the SNP to the Tories, in a constituency (including its predecessor before boundary changes) where the Tories haven't finished better than 3rd place in since the 70s, and still insisting that she wants independence despite joining a party vehemently opposed to another Indy Ref, really is a huge gift for Labour. Starmer and Anas Sarwar must have been laughing gleefully when they heard the news.

I can imagine that many people in East Kilbride, will not be happy at being represented by a Tory MP.


The SNP collapse (surely Labour are on track to win at least 20 seats or so in Scotland at the next GE), also means that the Tories won't be able to successfully repeat their previously strategy of warning voters in England about the 'horrors' of a Labour government propped by the SNP. It was a major reason why Cameron won a majority in 2015 (vote for Ed Miliband and you'll get Alex Salmond).

i lived in leeds for a while, in headingley and often wore a utd top and had no problems when either the cricket or rugby was on, and thered be thousands of leeds / yorkshire fans about.
i wouldnt ever ever dare wear it when there was football on in the pubs though.
so its a bit more nuance....

Don't let his reasonableness in these interviews/podcasts fool you. A quick look at his voting record in the House of Commons tells you he's the same as the rest of them.

I do appreciate that but the way he says it implies, unlike his colleagues, he read the relevant literature and then voted for it anyway, presumably because he either agreed with it or wanted to progress his career. On the face of it I find him a fairly affable and decent person but unless he does something meaningful to back that perception up I don't trust it.

I think he's said before that he wouldn't do anything that would cost him the whip (as that would lose him the ability to represent his constituents).

But as you point out that's a bit hypocritical, because he misrepresents his constituents in order to be able to represent them. Also, shows a lack of responsibility, which is a tory politician prequisite these days anyway.

True story, I once chased a cat out of an apartment complex with this guy. He was an affable chap even his voting record speaks for itself.

I have a more libelous story but I can't say it in case Niall gets in trouble.

Wasn't one of his points that he believes his constituents vote him in to pursue the party mandate, so if he votes against the party then he is misrepresenting his constituents. He also mentions that most politicians have to pick and choose carefully when they vote against their party. Still is a case that it makes him out as someone who wants to be a politician and therefore is afraid to lose the whip, however his point kind of makes sense in that the system along with the whip etc means its very hard not to follow the party line without losing the whip or being ousted therefore someone who rebelled a lot would probably be kicked out quickly anyway.

I mean his argument is that the only thing his voting record tells you is hes conservative mp. Which is enough to consider him a malicious prick and not a very good defence in my view.
I think its weak bullshit in a wider sense, if you cant stand over the policies your implementing then you shouldn't be implementing them. He doesn't even attempt to defend some of the heinous shit hes introduced.
I think he does a plausible impression of a human being but is the same human dogshit that you see elsewhere in the party
 
This will likely get overlooked a bit because of the by-election results, but the HS2 debacle loses even more money as the government does a fire sale of the land, with a bit of spite and likely added cronyism thrown into the mix.
