I think in the SNES and N64 versions it was the red one. Don't know about the later versions.
The red shell is a homing shell that can be destroyed by bananas, green shells or obstacles. The blue shell is the bastard that flies through the sky and hits the person in #1 spot, you cannot destroy it the only way is if you're in the middle of a cinematic bit. Either way, its a twat.
