Manchester United vs. Liverpool

I've just realised they're playing Lille this thursday. Brilliant. We have a week's rest while they have to play twice between now and Sunday. Hopefully Lille will give them a good run around, too.

Damn, should we hope that Liverpool win 1-0 in 90 minutes and it goes to extra time?

They've got a game tomorrow night too?

I knew about the uEFA game but can't believe they've got two games between now and Sunday. Flipping sweet.

A built in excuse for them losing all three

They have to score at least two goals against Lille if they want to go through without it going to ET, so even if they score a couple of early goals, they won't be able to sit back and take it easy. It's going to be tough for them.

No way, Gerrard & Torres will play both games this week against Pompey and Lille.

Hope they get roughed up a little.

They'd be subbed at some point, at the very least. Liverpool will rotate. We'll see Aqualini for Gerrard in one of these games, Kyrgyakos will probably get a game and they can bring in different wingers for these games with Reira, Maxi, Bennyoun, Kuyt and Babel to pick from. I'd guess Maxi is likely to start against United now.

Has there been any news on how bad Scholes injury in the warm up was? im really hoping hes fit for next week because i think the midfield area is where weve come unstuck against this shower in recent matches, if we can line up with Fletcher/Carrick/Scholes in midfield then id be extremly confident of winning this game.

If they're comfortable in both games, then Gerrard & Torres will be subbed. That's why ideally the matches will both be tight up until near the end so both will have to stay on.

Scholes is definitely a must for this.

I wonder why Corry made the bench instead of Gibson when Scholes pulled up, fair play to him though. Hopefully a few players will get back, need a decent substitution strategy for this game.

Rafa's taken off both players in uncomfortable situations before, at dodgey 1-0's and when the side's at level pegging. Great explaination of their current position in the league and why they can struggle with both avaliable to him.

It was also strange that neither Rafael or Evans even made the bench today.

As for substitution strategy well in an ideal world next week in my opinion anyway would be a bench of:

Berbatov/Giggs/Park/Gibson/Rafael/Evans/Pig

But that depends on the fitness of Scholes of course, but if that were the bench wed have Berbatov backing up Rooney with the option of going 4-4-2 should we need to change things with Giggs and Park covering Valencia and Nani who i think will start the game....that would be a good strong bench.

My head is telling me 4-3-3 with Park in behind Rooney as it's been working so brilliantly in Europe lately.

Yes me to although i have a nagging worry over the Park position for this one solely because it'll be a totally different match up, against Milan his job was to be busy in and around Pirlo not give him anytime to orchestrate attacks and obviously support Rooney when in possession, however Liverpool dont play with a 'Pirlo' type from deep, they have 2 spoilers/destroyers who merely sit in front of the defence for 90 minutes and block, and i just worry that might make Park a tad redundant in this match if he plays the same role as he will not have the space and freedom he did against Milan, thats why im hoping Scholes is fit, id prefer a tight 3 man midfield with Scholes and Fletcher attacking from deeper positions rather than having park playing from a starting position right on top of the areas Lucas and Mascherano play in.

Thats the only concern i have with Park playing this one centrally.

I agree Liverpool are a completely different team even if they dropped Lucas and go for Aqualani the fact is they'll play the same way they usually do and defend far better than Milan could ever cope. Play Park as the support role striker and all you end up with is Mascherano picking him up when he can Aqualani or Lucas covering Fletcher and Rooney being double marked and isolated, with Carrick basically playing long balls into the flanks while trying to mark Stevie G. Both sides will essentially play from the back four through their wingers.

Esenentially with Park in the attacking role, you almost set yourself up in a way to try to "out-Liverpool" Liverpool somewhat.

van der Sar

Neville - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra

Carrick
Fletcher - Scholes
Valencia --------------------- Park

Rooney

---------------------------------------------------------
Kuszczak; J. Evans; Rafael; Gibson; Giggs; Nani; Berbatov

Right wing was the hardest decision for me. Nani has been in very good form and it's hard to leave him out, but I just feel that Valencia's sheer pace could leave Insua and Liverpool exposed. The midfield 3 picks themselves, and I think Neville is now our first choice right back again.

I'll go for a hard-fought 2-0 win with Scholes and Park Ji-Sung to score.

If Scholes wasn't fit, and Giggs wasn't fit, I'd opt for Berbatov instead of Park centrally ... that's just me. Berbatov wasn't 100% fit for the Milan game last week, he probably could've started. It's better him than having absolutely no creative link to break Liverpool.

Just look at the games United play with none of Scholes, Giggs or Berbatov. :smirk:

If Scholes isnt fit id personally go with Giggs in the Scholes position in a central midfield 3 merely because i think a central midfield 3 will dominate in there, and that is where Giggs had his fantastic season last year so hes more than capable and he plays in much the same fashion as Scholes which is a bonus, by that i mean hes got great passing vision and will look to burst into the box from deep probably even more so than Scholsey....obviously hes been out for a month but listening to fergie talk up Giggs's freshness for the run in with another weeks training under his belt it wouldnt surprise me if he started next week, plus id imagine having a broken arm i.e not a muscle injury meant he was able to train and keep up a good level of fitness even during his spell out.

Ideally Scholes, but if not then Giggs.

I think that team is too negative to be honest. I wouldnt be against that formation, just that 11.

If i was going with 451 (or a variant of) then it would be:

Code:

Neville Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Scholes Fletcher
Valencia [COLOR="Silver"]---[/COLOR] Park [COLOR="silver"]---[/COLOR] Nani
Rooney[/CENTER]

But to be honest the more i think about it the more i'm thinking we should go with:

Valencia Carrick Fletcher Park
Berbatov Rooney[/CENTER]

Id be shocked if we went in 4-4-2 against these to be honest mate, weve been caned against Liverpool playing just 2 in the middle on the last couple of occasions a fact that you can bet your life will not have gone unoticed with Sir Alex, those two games alone highlight the importance of a strong central midfield, we lost the midfield battle at anfield this season and were horrid basically and were well beaten, last year at OT we played 4-4-2 with Carrick and Anderson in the middle and again lost the battle in there. and again were well beaten.

Id put money on Sir Alex playing 4-3-3/4-5-1 next week, and rightly so in my view, these games are often decided in midfield.

Fergie said that Rafael and Evans were injured for today but will be available for next Sunday.

Still wont play 4-4-2. ;)

Probably not to be honest, as i said before my head says 433. I don't see why we shouldnt go 442 though. We would play 442 against any other 6th or 7th placed team at Old Trafford after all :)

United also lost 4-3-3 at Anfield two seasons ago, with Scholes-Anderson-Carrick midfield which became a Nani-Hargreaves-Giggs one later on. Liverpool played an orthodox 4-4-2 almost with Kuyt and Keane upfront.

At the last game at Anfield there really was no real choice for the midfield, in so much as to say that he had no Fletcher nor Park avaliable, just only whether to play Scholes or Anderson.

Don't have a luxury of midfielders without Anderson, Hargreaves, Giggs, Scholes and O'Shea all either injured or carrying knocks, even Gibson seems doubtful if Corry's taking his place so 4-4-2 is a possible necessary option.

Should be nice and easy, this. Liverpool are worse than they've been in a long time, with the most clueless manager in the country at the helm. And with the run of form they're in, coming to the home of the best team in the country by a mile should make for good viewing. We'll fecking rape them.

This was the first post I read like this, so sorry to single it out, as I'm sure there are many like it in the thread, about how we are in excellent form, they aren't, etc.

There's been posts like this in I'm sure all of the previous three matchday threads, and they've won the past three games.

It won't be easy in my opinion, they'll make us work very hard for it, and a win will be an excellent result, regardless of their current form and how they've been beaten by the likes of Wigan and Lille

Either that or replace Park with Scholes.
