MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

I'm as shocked as most on here.

Disgusting cnutish behaviour - Yes
Let himself down - Yes
Overrated - Really!

I've spent years defending Rooney against England fans calling him shite! Now either loads of posters on here have been wearing rose tinted glasses, or people are just struggling with the emotions of todays clarification

Love the way how some of you are saying he's not that good, there are much better people out there etc etc now. Where as before nearly everyone was saying, "Best playing the in league, world class, one of the best 3 players in the world."

I still think he's world class, but a massive cnut and I will keep saying that wherever he goes. Unless he never recovers his form, then well, he's just shit

How about those of us that aren't in the "nearly everyone" bracket?

you're going to laugh if I answer honestly, as if I'm some sort of traitor or something

but c'est la vie, it's the truth

hoddle, scholes, giggs (not english but wales is close enough)....all some of the greatest technicians the world has seen in the last 30 years.

yes being english most of the time means you are technically deficient, but there are great british technicians.

jack wilshere is english and name me 5 foreign lads his age that have his technical ability?

Pardon my thickness, but I'm not sure if he is just stalling for a better contract, or just wants out completely.

But anyhow, if he is in form, play him, for the good of the team. We can't waste time and points over sentimental/emotional reasons.

I'm very serious - we all slate our media for overrating John Terry and Stevie Me because "they're English", well, I've always thought that Rooney is overrated but we're not allowed to say that at the Caf.

Well, we are now - Ronaldo, Messi, Henry is his prime, Ronaldino in his prime, fat Ronaldo is in his prime - that is/was World Class.

Rooney is a brilliant footballer but I've seen better wearing a number 10 shirt. Far better. And slimmer.
Amen, Amen.

This takes me back to a conversation I had around the time Ronaldo left, or when it was becoming clear he would inevitably leave. It was about the difference between him and Rooney with regards to loyalty. The perception that Rooney would spend the rest of his life at United, while Ronaldo clearly wouldnt.

At the time I remember buying into that perception but I didnt think it was necessarily a difference of loyalty / integrity or anything like that. It was just that Rooney seemed to be a home-loving Northern lad who would always be satisfied playing for Manchester United because we offered him the things he wanted: CL football, trophies, prestige, convenience. Ronaldo wanted to play in Spain, which Rooney didnt. That seemed to be the difference.

I guess what I am saying is that I never really bought into Rooney being a true United Fan kind of a player, someone who would never want to play anywhere else, someone who grew up thinking exclusively of playing for United. For a time it suited him and there seemed little reason for those circumstances to change but apparently they have.

What I really do want to hear is a clear, intelligible and believable explanation of exactly why he wants to leave. Can it really be purely and simply he wants a shit load more money? If so, it just goes to show how wrong you can be about someone as I never would have thought that would have been his prime motivation. But as some have said, the amount of money we are presumably talking about here, I guess a lot of people would do the same thing.
Good post that roughly echoes my opinion.

Yeah getting to the quarters in the CL is a very good achievement.

Sarcasm?

If so it has gone too far. Disrespected Ferguson, the club and the fans. Cheerio and to the OP, yes I say put him on the bench.

Greatest player i've ever seen, far greater then anything i've seen Messi or Ronaldo do - but you know what they say about the light that shines brightest.

Spot on btw.

Fergie has said that his people don't even want to enter talks about a new contract.

Believe me, if there was any possiblity that Rooney is staying Fergie wouldn't have come out with his statements today. There's no coming back from this.

I just love Sir Alex so much after this interview. He showed his human nature more than anything and it appears Rooney has really hurt him with his decision to leave.

Hectic is right. This is totally different from the Ronaldo saga. When United announced that they have recieved the bid from Madrid, I was a bit dissapointed but I was not angry nor was I shocked. He always made it clear that he had personal aspirations to go play for what he regards as the pinnacle of club football. Conversely, Rooney kept it extremely hush-hush and to suddenly read about him engineering a move out simply makes me sick.

feck off Wayne. Let him rot, Sir Alex.

...he sticks Rooney in the stands from now until he goes (assuming he does go)?

Even if it results in us winning nothing this season?

Discuss

EDIT: Let's assume he was on form.

Of course! What kind of question is this?

You don't 'stall for a better contract' by disrespecting your manager and demanding to leave. I mean Wayne probably isn't the smartest peanut in the turd, but surely even he recognises that when he says he wants out...he better make sure he's going out.

And do you really think we'd benefit by giving an out-of-form Rooney games, even now that his head's not with United anymore? And what message does that give to the players who actually want to play for the club?

are you serious? almost every youngster at age 18 in South America has that kind of technical ability on the ball. That is not what sets Whilshere apart, although being a technically proficient Brit does have it's advantages in the Prem. Wilshere is a playmaking genuis.

look, this discussion isn't what I was really trying to start in this thread

do you not agree with me with Rooney was allowed all sorts of extra breathing room and was free from criticism by our fans because they could relate to him more than other United players since he seemed to be a regular ol' bloke and was a poster boy of the biggest club in England?

No not at all. Id say it is a very good achievement, though not a great one. To be honest it is more or less the minimum we should be aiming for, quarters in the CL. But once you get that far you can hold your head high. Not come close to winning it but given a good account of yourself.

But as you said, this isnt the main thrust of your argument anyway so might as well leave it.

If there's one thing football teaches you, is that there's no such thing as never. If Rooney can do this, he can also join City. And he can also grovel back. I don't think it'll happen, but I won't be shocked.

To suggest he isn't a very good player, one of the top 10 strikers in the world, is just spastic knee jerkism. I don't think he is world class, yet. But lacking in technical ability? Christ.

Though we wont ever see a penny of the money spent on the team so really what difference does it make how much we get for him?

You say that, but the Glazers financial plan is only viable as long as we compete, if we lose Rooney they have to replace him for fear we become less marketable or less competitive.

Agree. There are more important aspects here than points on a table. Besides, with the form he is in at the moment we'll do as well until Christmas without as him as we would with him.

Yes. Pardon me appearing extremely kneejerk at the moment but I would be pretty angry if he continues to play given he is definitely leaving. No player is ever bigger than the club and this man has treated the fans like a bunch of twats, treated the manager with contempt and disrespect, and is not fit to wear our shirt. Put him in the fecking reserves, if you have to.

Like Sir Alex said in the MUTV interview, "I want no nonsense from you. Just respect the club. But I don't think he's done that."

Even if we find out he's getting a bucket load at his new club. Will we ever really know the truth? His not going to admit it and when it comes to explaining his reason.. what can he really say? We lacked ambition.. that can only be clarified in who we buy when he leaves. He wanted a change? If he stays in England not much will change will it.

Does anyone else think Rooney might just have gone into panic mode? Maybe he realized after he cheated the extent of what he had done and that sooner or later word would spread and that he would be crucified in England. I don't think its city he is going to, he is trying to engineer a move to another country, which probably wouldn't be as bad as being busted in your home country. I know if got busted with something like that I would rather be far away than at home

He now apparently has the first touch of a Dirk Kuyt

I hope so. But what about there being "no value in the market"?

Not sure I think the Glazer plan is viable anyway but I see the point you are making and I hope you are right.

Surely you'd expect all the top 10 strikers in the world to be 'world class'?

To be honest, I don't really care where he goes I just want him gone. Yesterday.

That said I'd prefer to feck him off to Spain or Italy. Maybe Inter? Scousers seem to get along swimmingly with their manager.
