Anderson

Our CM generally was given a very hard time by theirs.
Toure and Silva had very good games.

Anderson especially wasnt as much involved as I would have liked but overall I thought he had a decent game. Didnt do much wrong, but on the ohter side, nothing special neither.

As Top mentioned when Scholes isnt in the side Anderson comes from much deeper. He collects the balls from our CBs and is our playmaker.
Against City he played much further forward and was kept quiet very well by them.

What role could that be which involves using the ball so infrequently?

He made significantly fewer passes per minute than every other CM on the pitch, bar none. Surely at least one of them was playing a similar role to what we were expecting Anderson to do?

(my money's on David Silva)

It was just a theory.
I was thinking more in the lines of the mental role he seems to take when playing with Scholes, where he becomes a bit redundant as Scholes fulfils the playmaking role and thus Anderson becomes somewhat of a inbetween player, where he's not fully supporting the striker and not really taking part in the 'passing it around waiting for an opening'.

None of that explains why Fletcher (who was also playing ahead of Scholes) managed to be considerably more involved than Anderson.

He's a phenomenal talent and I think our season hangs on whether or not he can get back to the form he showed around Christmas but it is weird the way he can go from being at the centre of everything we do to letting the whole game pass him by. It really is one extreme or another.

Yeah, that's as good a theory as any. Presumably Fergie is hoping he will get on the ball in the gaps between their midfield and back four and start to create. For some reason, this didn't happen and he ended up being neither one thing nor another.

I thought he did it really well for the first 30 minutes or so against Valencia but generally he's been a bit underwhelming as the more advanced player in a midfield three (which is odd, because it's supposed to be his 'natural' role)

I thought all or our CM weren't that impressive, but I agree Fletch and Scholes were more involved than Anderson. On the one hand because Fletcher had a good game (for this season's standards) and Anderson not and on the other hand because both, Fletch and Scholes, did more work defensively and for that reason were much more involved in the game overall.
Let's not forget that City just are a very good side especially defensively and were able to keep especially Rooney and Anderson quiet for most periods.
Nothing mysterious about it.

Anderson's game wasnt "extreme" at all though, neither did the whole game pass him by. He just couldnt get as much into the game as we would have liked.

His fitness is terrible compared to the average Premier League player and that's what will ultimately prevent him from fulfilling his undoubted potential if he doesn't do something about it. I accept that it won't have been easy for him coming back from what was a serious injury but it's pretty disappointing that he's not currently in better shape after his run of games over the Christmas period. He must be doing something wrong whether it be eating the wrong food or not training hard enough.

If he remains injury free and has a full pre-season before the start of the next campaign then he simply has to show a very significant improvement in his conditioning and fitness. Hopefully he will because it would be such a waste if he doesn't.

At times he was almost Rooney's partner, no wonder he became peripheral. He was too far forward at times for a 3rd midfielder. Instead of mainly operating in the hole, he seemed to be trying to operate in and around the box. That is why at times City's central 3 were getting the upper hand against us in the middle.

Yeah, I'm really hoping his fitness issues will be sorted after a summer off and a full pre-season. An opportunity he has yet to have at United. I have a horrible feeling he might be involved in another tournament this summer though. Vaguely remember someone mentioning it a while back.

I think he has shown that as he has got games better fitness levels, the ability to complete more games at the high intensity level he plays at. The problem is/has been that once he plays 5-6 games in a row - at some point it will take a toll on him to where he may tire earlier in games.

This isn't something I attribute to having poor fitness training methods or poor eating habits but, more of a difference in his approach to the game coupled with not having proper down time and pre-season training to achieve fitness levels to the way he plays.

You mentioned average PL player but, the average PL player doesn't play the way Anderson does on the field. Compare Anderson and Carrick, Carrick may cover a lot more ground over the course of the game but, Anderson will tire quicker because of the way he covers that ground - at a lot higher pace intensity.

Try jogging 5 mils and sprinting 5 miles - who do you think is going to tire faster?

Obviously he needs to find a way to be able to play more games on the trot through achieving even higher fitness levels but, also perhaps he needs to find more judicial ways of using his energy on the field. It can also happen with managing his games a bit more where he plays maybe 3-4 games and then sits out 1. If he plays maybe 5-6 games in a row in quick succession but, then sits out 2-3 weeks - then obviously when he gets back on the pitch, the first game back he might not be in peak match fitness form.

Training and eating well will only get you so far in football - there is a reason why they talk about match fitness, games bring bout a whole other level in people.

It's the Copa America, but it's a fair assumption that he'll be selected, especially if this injury news is confirmed

Copa America this summer?!

I remember he has said he's looking forward to his first full pre-season with Manchester United.

Back for the reserves tonight

Manchester United midfielder Anderson makes his comeback tonight for the reserves.

The Brazilian has been out of action since United's FA Cup win over non-league Crawley in February when he suffered a knee injury that was suggested would sideline him for the remainder of the season.

Anderson will see action tonight against Manchester City reserves.

Provided Anderson suffers no reaction, he would then be in contention for the next part of United's packed programme, which starts with Saturday's Premier League clash with Fulham, which precedes the Champions League return with Chelsea and an eagerly-anticipated FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City on April 16.

Good stuff, would be nice to have him fit for Shitty. Generally plays well against them.

again, anderson double, holy shit hell is freezing over?

2 superb goals

1st was a trademark through the middle and a tight one to in the area before a right footed shot.

2nd was another run through the middle and great curler into teh bottom corner with his left foot

If Anderson can start doing this in the First team, we don't need a midfield signing.

Exactly the thing he gives us that no one else in the team can do in midfield with true class on the ball, bar Giggs. And even Ryan doesn't have his power. Those runs through the midfield, on his good days, are huge and turn matches our way.

Exactly. There was a good period during Dec/Jan when he was absolutely fantastic in all our home games. Valencia, Brum, Rovers, Arsenal. And then Fergie started dropping him.

He looked unusually competent in front of goal tonight. Hope it's a sign that there's been further development on the weakest part of his game.

He's come back at the right time to give us extra options in midfield. We could do with his directness in the big games ahead.
