seconded. We should Redknapp him and try to turn him into a winger...

He has played half his professional games on the left wing. I'm not surprised at all that he's an absolute shambles in defence and reading the game. He is an attacking player. Not a very good one, but he can be useful sometimes going forward, and his crossing is decent.

I feel sorry for him, he's getting dog's abuse for stepping up for the offside trap.

If we hadn't let Cole score we wouldn't be giving him half as much stick.

He's a backup left back we brought for buttons, what do you expect?

The bizarre thing is why does Moyes rate him in front of Fabio.
The thing is with back up is you expect them to get basics right, or you can actually use them against lower quality opposition and that decision not cost you. It's dangerous playing buttner against any type of opposition because he's just so bad defensively that any player who attacks him go pasts him basically, and he's capable of fecking up offside traps so badly that it can cost you. Clean sheets go a long way for the self confidence of a whole back line, but throwing away a goal like that can sometime ruin everything.

Come on. He doesn't make the odd mistake here or there. He's a defensive liability.

True....but why was he signed? I mean...did Fergie see a video or something....did the scouts visit and coincidently he just had a few good games. I just can't see how anyone watching him could think he was a good signing, or useful signing for united!!??

Maybe each time the scouts went to assess Buttner it coincided with him playing a blinder. Pure and simple coincidence.

The thing is even his attacking game isn't impressive, he likes to do those weird and pointless step overs, his crossing is a bit meh. He loves to attack that's for sure at least.
Those fking stepovers gahhh.

Read somewhere that even the scouts were surprised Fergie wanted to sign Buttner because he was like 4th or 5th choice LB on their scouting lists.

Tell me about them ... So pointless, yesterday he wasted a little space he had inside the box by doing them instead of doing something more useful like shooting or squaring the ball.

It was one of our Dutch scouts who apparently said he rated Buttner as 4th or 5th best LB just in Holland.

Only just saw the goal from yesterday. Wow.

Exactly what I was like. Watched the match live but had to switch off before the end. If you ever needed proof that he isn't a defender that was it.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't even move forward. He just does the stepovers standing still. More pointless than Valencia's crosses.

That's terrible.

He's getting dogs abuse because he didn't step up. Had he have stepped up we'd have played Cole offside.

And it isn't a one off issue, he's rubbish at defending all the time. Truly terrible at it.

Yeah its the reverse Bale. He wasnt particularly good as a winger so they turned him into an offensive fullback

I guess thats Kieran Richardsoning him

The real concern is that he's at least as likely to do that against a good side, where we don't have the comfort of a three goal cushion. I'm sure he's a nice lad and all but he's not good enough for us. I'm all for giving people a chance but he has much too far to come to even get close to being up to our standard.

Agreed. He's got a decent, powerful shot on him but frankly that's all he offers.

Should give him to them permanently on a free, it'd eliminate Spurs from the race for fourth.

I suspect if true it'll be a loan with an option to buy that they don't take up. Including the clause now protects them if he turns out to be brilliant and it's more likely to convince us to loan him if we think we have a buyer at the end of it, I would have thought. But I can see him going there and either struggling for games or getting in the team initially only to lose his place. Rose looks a better player to me.

Haven't they already nicked one of our left backs?

I'm not sure Buttner's as bad as he's made out. He's a relatively late LB conversion and has attributes that can be very effective. He just needs to learn the defensive side and positioning, although I don't ever see him been good enough to be a starter and United or a team of our equivalent level.

I guess, he can learn that side of his game but as you say i can't see him being allowed to do so here. He's not good enough going forward to make the sacrifice either.

Nah, he's definitely as bad as made out. He's possibly the worst actual defender I've ever seen at the club.

This might sound like an overstatement, but I was thinking the exact same thing. Let's be honest, since the inception of the premier league, which full back have we seen as bad as him?

Can't see Buttner going anywhere in this transfer window. He's an important backup to Evra .Especially since we have no chance of getting Baines or Shaw.

We should just go all out to get Shaw, within reason of course, which means we have no chance of getting Shaw.

But we should be in with an exciting summer lined up now that Ed has had some work experience, he should hopefully put that warchest to good use.
