That offside was a total wtf moment. Like seriously, how can a defender be so dumb to play a man offside by that much?

It's just pure doziness / not paying attention. So much of defending is about being totally switcjed on to everything is happened, even when there is no obvious immediate danger. He was day-dreaming, pure and simple.

They took way too long to realise what was going on, they were complacent. It was mainly buttners fault but who gives a feck? Welbeck scored again, janujaz got a great goal, jones had a top game and Rafael is looking back to his best but instead let's talk about buttner fecking the offside trap up a couple of minutes after he came on.

But why shouldn't we talk about him? He's genuinely shite and he's our only back-up to Evra who's getting old and is prone to the odd brainfart.

It's a shame the Coentrao deal has fallen through - then again, at the time I thought Moyes would give games to Fabio. Surely he can't be a worse left-back than Büttner.

We can talk about how shit he is generally if that's better for you?

Also, how you're finding blame for any of our other defenders in that goal is beyond me. You do understand the offside trap, right?

Some are being a bit harsh on him. He wasn't up with the pace of the game.

Because Moyes was looking for a left back all summer and buttner leaving has been popping up everywhere. He's clearly being sold in jan or in the summer. Until then he may not be good enough but he gives his all so fair play. Fabio has clearly been utter trash in training, it fecking obvious.

When is he ever? It's not like it's a one off.

Is this what happens when you bring subs on? They straight away give away goals? I don't see it happening in every match, so presumably not every player does it, just the shite ones. Like Buttner.

This is the Buttner thread, to be fair, and that was a fecking woeful display from him for their goal.

He couldn't be arsed to step out with the rest of the back four because he did not pay attention. He's either the stupidest footballer in our squad or he just didn't give a shit. If it's the latter we can't say he gives his all.

Also, Fabio might have been utter trash in training but Büttner is utter trash in actual football games so it's not like we have a lot to lose by giving Fabio a chance instead of him.

Of course I do, but I also expect our central defenders to actually be aware of whether it has worked or not, buttner has only just come on, probably off the pace so why was nobody telling him to push up? Then why did nobody realise it didn't work until he was long gone. It's Carlton fecking cole, he's slower than a snail. Not sure why I'm bothering here, consolation goal.

He wasn't paying attention. It's pretty obviously nothing to do with work rate, he runs like crazy all game.

He 'couldn't be arsed'?!?

Seriously, the state of some you lot.

This is true, but the fact that he wasn't paying enough attention to step up with a pretty simple off side trap is alarming for someone who is supposedly a defender at Manchester United.

"Wasn't paying attention" but "always gives his all"... if he wasn't paying attention then he wasn't giving his all.

Also, it's weird that you try to shift blame on to the other three defenders who did absolutely nothing wrong and tried to catch Carlton Cole when they realised that Büttner wasn't doing his job.

Brain fart for the goal but he's not as bad as some make him out to be. I'm glad we have him.

Why are you glad we have him? What possible benefit does he bring? I honestly hold out more hope for Bebe.

In fairness I don't think he can't be arsed, I just think he's shite.

I did say that he might just be the stupidest footballer we have, someone who can't even understand a simple thing like the offside trap. It's certainly a possibility.

He's been generally quite good this season, against Shakhtar in particular he played well.

I just don't think that's been the case, at all. He's a terrible, terrible defender, he makes Evra's positioning look textbook. His saving grace is that he runs towards the opposition goal an awful lot and he sometimes carries the ball with him. He could well improve but I can't see that he's ever going to be a good, reliable choice for us.

Ah yes, professional footballer doesn't understand the offside trap.

Very likely.

Very poor from him today,, effectively scored an own goal.

I like him. Offers quite a bit going forward and he's actually decent in one on one situations - Diame, who skinned Evra and someone else at one stage far too easily, found it hard to beat him. His positioning is a bit shit at times but he is backup after all.

OK, so it's unlikely that he doesn't understand what he was supposed to do and it's hilarious to suggest that he couldn't be arsed to pay attention to defending.

What is it then? You're telling me he did everything right but he was unlucky?

No I'm coming round to the idea that 'he can't be bothered' and 'doesn't understand the offside trap'.

Great debating technique right there, man. Have nothing to say? Roll your eyes at the other, it's what top reds do!

His role in the team is to give Evra a rest. That rest can only be given when there's little to lose.

You could put absolutely anyone in our squad at left back to give Evra a rest, and not weaken the team any more than playing Buttner there does.

Come one man, I said the idea that a professional footballer playing for Manchester United not understanding the offside trap is growing on me, it now sounds like a wholly realistic possibility. In fact, I'm sure there are numerous defenders who don't actually understand what offside is, and that there are goalkeepers who still don't understand the back pass rule.
