Evans has always looked decent at left-back on the rare occasion he's played there, for club and country.

The comparison with Smalling is harsh as Evans looks much more comfortable than Smalling on the ball when he's playing as a central defender.

It's actually a little odd that we've seen Smalling so often on the right in the last couple of seasons but never Evans on the left. I guess SAF and Moyes must have more faith in Buttner eventually getting his shit together than anyone on here.

I guess there's a reason why SAF and the dumb one prefer Buttner to Evans right?

I think we should let Buttner play. He's been the perfect squad member thus far. Always gives his all and has never complained about limited minutes. Give him a shot.

I disagree. Im sick of seeing CBs moving as RB-LB. It never worked at United.

Hadn't realised the booking ruled Evra out.

Have to be Buttner won't it. He won't play Evans at left back all of a sudden.

And the prospect of playing Rafael left is just plain daft, as you'd be pissing around with both full backs!
He'll have to play Welbeck left wing for sheer work rate to support Buttner.

Same, I thought they were discussing it because Evra let so many chances come through his side last night.

I really don't like the idea of Evans at left back because I don't want to see Vidic play in important games now. His head appears to be elsewhere and that probably makes Evans our number one CB...from my point of view.

Buttner will do this and shut you all up. He's the best worst player in the world.

Plus, to be fair, he'll probably race back a lot quicker than Evra, even if he's not as good once he gets there.

Playing 3 at the back with 2 wing backs, in our Quarter Final where we will be the underdog, and you think this will solve a problem? I'm not trying to be rude, but I don't believe you aren't a WUM

I don't see what being an underdog has to do with it as we will be regardless of what formation we'll be playing. I've explained why I think playing 3 at the back with 2 wing backs will be beneficial without Evra being available. Buttner will not be as exposed because he'll have adequate cover behind him. And calling me a WUM is rude but thanks for providing well reasoned, well thought out objections :wenger:

to anyone talking silly wing back stuff. Who would be the actual left wing back? Surely still Buttner!

That cross

I remember Evra having Robben in his pocket before Rafael was sent off - matching him and beating him for pace, reading him and controlling him. I suspect that Buttner will do the same!

The Buttner jokes are predictable, every clown on twitter is making them. It's ironic because there's a genuine possibility that Evra could have been an even bigger defensive liability.

Robben's a better player now I think.

No fecking way. This is Buttner we're comparing him to.

Laughing at his crosses is particularly fecking retarded, it's the one element of his game that is probably a lot better than Evra's.

And agree that on recent form, the thought of Evra having Robben running at him is a scary one.

Mind you, it's even scarier thinking about Buttner trying to keep a disciplined defensive line. Not as though Bayern lack players who can spring an offside trap. That could get very ugly, very quickly.

So this is first game I've seen where he hasn't done anything suicidal defensively.

Did pretty well. But gives zero extra confidence in him for a Bayern match.

Damn all wrong with his performance there this evening. For a lad that doesn't get all that much game time he looked both solid and confident when it came to defending and attacking. It was a good play it safe, get the job done type of a performance form him.
