Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal Player

I'd probably put him top 10 but there's no way he's top 5. Messi, Ronaldo, Ibra, Suarez, Robben, Ribery, Iniesta for sure.
Fair enough. Not sure why you continue to put Ribery ahead of him though. He is nowhere near top 10 at the moment.

He isn't top 5 but surely top10. Ribery is a rubbish shout, as he hasn't performed well since the Ballon D'Or snubbing.

My top 5 would be: Messi, Ronaldo, Bale, Suarez, Ibrahimovic.

None of them played anything like him last year, and it takes a lot for me to say that about Iniesta as he's my favourite player since Ruud.

No because it's "yes he is, no he isn't" kind of argument. But good on you for being a prick.
I'm not quite so sure I'm the prick here, but I suppose some would have to resort to name calling.

It's so hard to sort out top 5, top 10 arguments because players have different values and contributions to their respective teams. Di Maria is incredibly good though. I could probably make an argument for why he is top 5, just as easily as I could make an argument for why he isn't. Talking about where he is right now, he's way better than Ribery, who has been gash for a while. But an argument could be made that Ronaldo, Messi (obviously), Saurez, Bale and Robben are all a little bit better/more valuable. But it's subjective, and margins are fine. Players like Iniesta (especially), Kroos and Modric deserve to be in that conversation. Hazard, Rues, Muller are among those not far away.

Di Maria is "top 5" quality and I'm delighted to have him at United. Whether he is or isn't actually one of the best 5 players in the world right now is incredibly subjective and to be honest, doesn't fecking matter.

When ranking Di Maria it surely has to come down to whether you think that on Sunday was a shot or not. If it was a shot there's no way he can be considered top 5. We should see what people think about that, shouldn't take too long to come to a consensus and then we'll be able to wrap this up.

Messi wasn't better. Ronaldo probably too. This leave us with Suarez > Di Maria > Robben
People will literally flay you for saying that.

Messi scored 28 goals in 31 league games, 8 goals in 7 champions league games and also got 13 assists. But he wasn't better than Di Maria?

Alright we've had our fun let's move this all conversation to the Di Maria thread.

15 or so mentions in a thread with over 100 replies is hardly glowing. Most of the 15 didn't have him in their top five either.

Horrible today. So many displaced passes and all around play. Terrible performance.
Tbf with every Dortmund player pressing like a madman our top players would only dare to pass back to DDG, most of the other passes wouldn't reach one of our players anyway. It's easy to blame Sanchez but Dortmund is a bloody great team, and the atmosphere for the visiting team could hardly be more terrifying!

Thank god we held out and got Di Maria. Sanchez is a good player but Di Maria is just better. Also suits us much better.

Sanchez also suits Arsenal better so it's two good deals for both clubs.

Yeah, Di Maria isn't top 5. Maybe top 8 and probably top 10 though. And his assist for Mata was clearly a shot.

There's no way di Maria being a top five player would even be discussed on here three months ago.

I dispute that assertion, though I have no facts to support that dispute. My impression has been that Di Maria has been greatly admired on these pages for several seasons. He's no Ronaldo or Messi -- and no one has said he's their equal -- but Di Maria had consistently been regarded as a key player for Real Madrid before his arrival at OT.

I think a fair few people would put Di Maria in the top 5 players right after the champions league final, being man of the match showed how much he has improved from in the past and his recent form suggests he's continuing to improve, specifically Argentina vs Germany

Its definitely debatable

He really wasn't, people saw him as a lesser Nani even last summer.

True and after last season, before we were even linked with him, most people were saying he was Real's second best player (or so) that season and one of the best in the world. Certainly rated well above Sanchez, who got a little bit of buzz off the back of his world cup. Of course Di Maria went further he was just slightly off his game

He's been admired by many on here for ages and especially last season. The CL final thread for example is almost nothing but praise for Di Maria and talking about how amazing he is.
I meant the summer of 2013. Some were saying they wanted to buy him after he grabbed his balls in front of the Madrid fans and it looked like he would be off but lots were saying they would rather just keep Nani instead. Only an idiot wouldn't admire him after his last season though.

Its funny that people are quick to blame star players who become largely invisible against us, when one of the core principles of Klopp´s system is to take key wide players out of the game. We managed to contain some of the best players on the planet when the system clicked: Ribery, Robben, Bale, Ronaldo or Di Maria.

Put the mighty Di Maria in the same position as Sanchez today and he would have most likely looked the same: rather ordinary. The system we employed today is an absolute nightmare for such a player. Not only did we play with a highly defensive orientated central midfield, which shifted to the side if needed but also the two offensive midfielder, who are the best in tracking back and general defensive contribution. This led to Sanchez being constantly doubled if not even trippled from time to time. No matter how good you are, you can´t consistently beat two players, who are good in defensive areas, which is a key requirement to make it under Klopp.

Absolutely. Don't know what is happening here for a while now, every top player needs to have one average game and there are several posts questioning the signing of that player. As if Sanchez never existed at Barca where he was impressive in some of the biggest games as well as in the world cup.

Anyway hope either you guys or Atletico win it this season. It's really telling that you were so close to winning it but in the last minutes lost to the "superior" team/team with star players even as squad players" from the own country. Exactly the same happened to Atletico last season. Of course with a bit more luck things could have been different, but normally a smaller (quality) squad results in less rotation and injuries which unfortunately effect the biggest / most crucial games of the season. It just worked out for Atletico in the last league game against Barca, against RM in the final sadly the limit was definitely reached.

That's hard to believe, but I guess you'll find all types of bad ideas on here.

I could see someone wishing we had spent that money elsewhere, but not wanting di Maria? Bizarre.
I was only after joining the forum then and wasn't posting much so I can't really remember if they were saying it because they hoped the money would be spent elsewhere. I certainly hope that's what it was!

Some people didn't want diMaria because of his 'diving' label. But most still admired him as one of the best winger in the world.

This summer, I wanted Sanchez more than diMaria (and even Reus). He is that good, imho. Sanchez has proven himself in other big clubs (and NT) as an excellent player. A couple of games with indifferent performance won't change my opinion about him (yet).
