You aim for the attacker or the space infront of them.

You do not aim just for a dangerous area when there is no one there. Or do you overhit them.

I would give Bebe a 5/10 for crossing.
You aim for the space between the keeper and the defenders, it's the forward's job to attack the ball.
You've obviously never played as a winger.

EDIT - my bad I see this thread has moved on in the time it took me to reply and someone already said that.

Because of the unfortunate injury to Valencia Bebes push for the first team as been stepped up.Never saw the game but reports seem to suggest that he was anonymous.

Anonymous would be harsh. We were outplayed by Villa and starved of the ball for quite long stretches, but I thought Bebe (along with Eikrem) was one of our brighter players personally. Obertan was good when running at defenders, but all too often he wasted the ball at the end of it or delayed far too long before crossing. Which is one of the reasons Bebe was (for me) a bright spot last night, he didn't do the Nani/Obertan thing of dwelling far too long on the ball

I sometimes wonder if he's actually ever watched a game, let alone played

They were aimed into dangerous areas. If he waits and waits for a striker to get into position every time then the opposition's defense can regroup. His crossing was fine. One or two wayward balls in, but generally his delivery was good. Plus, it was done with a minimum of fuss.

On the other hand if he cross the ball in the box when none of his mates is there then he is either an idiot or blind. Don't forget that own goal had already been called for first team.

They were in the box.

They were on their heels and weren't looking to get beyond their marker. That was the problem.

Do let me know the reason why? Please refer to my comments after I said I agree with him.

Read what I and other posters like SecondFig, Thoraximus and De Selby are saying. Or, simply, when you find yourself agreeing with Scholesy and devilish then you can safely assume that you're in the wrong.

I did read your other comments. We can put it down to it being his first game with his teammates - they maybe weren't expecting him to deliver the ball so quickly and firmly from quite a deep position, and he was obviously expecting them to attack the six yard box. He did the right thing putting into the right area, rather than aim a hopeless ball towards the edge of the box that would easily be picked off by the defenders. Next time they will have no excuse to not bust a gut to get in the right areas when Bebe is on the ball, and Bebe will also have to then try and pick out runners. He wasnt ignoring runners yesterday - there just weren't any. When there was - Morrison - he picked him out.

When a player puts in a cross like that and the striker latches onto it then it can look like he's picked his man out but most of the time he hasn't. It's simply that both players know the area where the ball should be played.

Fine. I didnt read the previous discussion though. I was just agreeing to that one sentence of his. I know you guys dont like Scholesy, but there's no such need to brand everyone else who agrees to some or part of his comments as idiot.

In general, great wingers should be efficient with their crosses. In that sense, I do agree with Scholesy. Ideally, the best wingers can always look up and cross to the right areas where there are teammates there and finding the perfect part of their head or feet. In reality, its a mixture of good crossing into the right area where attackers can attack and also looking up and finding the target.
The only wingers who consistently pick out players like that are the Beckham type. Because they lack the natural guile to waste the fullback and put in a cross into an area a striker should be attacking. This was the kid's first game. yet his crosses were mostly sent at the right time in the right areas were strikers almost always are.

I assure you, on a day when United are not being out played, such crossing would result in at least 2 goals. Especially when he knows his teammates much more.

So basically you're saying that the winger can cross aimlessly and its the striker's job to perform miracles and reach them? I never thought that the striker is the on the pitch ball boy.
No. He is saying that a winger is supposed to cross balls into dangerous areas. Not only to the man. It's up to the man to ensure he gets into the areas where the crosses can meet him. The winger doesn't always have the time to wait for him to show up because of marking. Wingers anticipate where they think their forwards will end up. It's on rare occasions that they just plain pick out a person Beckham style.

The striker need to be at the right time at the right place but the winger must be wise not to cross the ball when the players are not in the box.

Im talking in general here rowem.

So in general crossing when players aren't in the box is stupid, but Bebe crossed when players were in the box.

So please explain why you are saying this in a discussion about Bebe's crossing.

Or why you posted using "he", in response to a poster's comment's about Bebe's crossing.

Actually, don't bother, just do the world a favour and go buy a gun and put a bullet through your stupid little brain.

When IS the right time and WHERE is the right place?

So you are saying that a winger must never cross a ball into undefended area if there is no striker there at that moment in time? That's misguided.

I thought Bebe's crosses were excellent. I just thought Keane never made that forward move to try and meet the crosses. This may be because he doesn't know Bebe's playing style, but still, as a centre forward...

Manchester United's controversial capture Bebe is being groomed as a right winger - and new cover for crocked Antonio Valencia.

The £7.4million signing made his reserve team debut in his surprise role and caught the eye with his pace and spectacular crossing.

Bebe arrived as a striker in an unexpected deal that shocked football and raised questions that angered boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

However he appeared as a wide man on his first run-out in the 'stiffs' and got over a nervous start to look the part - even if his fee does still raise eyebrows.

Bebe could get a run in his new position and may even have a Carling Cup airing at Scunthorpe next week. Valencia's season-long absence may even clear a way for him.

Ferguson missed the match but Portuguese winger Nani, who is mentoring Bebe, was at the game as Bebe staked his claim with some hard-to-defend deliveries.

United's young team, also featuring Gabriel Obertan, were outclassed by Aston Villa who had many senior fringe men in their side.

Don't know what the Daily mail said but The Mirror appears to be more hopeful.

Interesting that Fergie mentioned him in the presser this morning about Bebe(and Obertan) as backup for the first team on the wings. We might just see him towards the back-end of this season if we are running out of bodies :D

Nani puts the ball into dangerous areas. But it is different to Bebe. Bebe simply blasted the ball in immediately.

Nani didn't always do that, he's had the benefit of 3 seasons experience so I don't know how you can compare Bebe at present.

That's one of the most difficult skills a winger will have to learn. Even Ronaldo spent years mastering such judgement and even though he is one of the best wingers in football history there is still room for improvement in that particular skill.

A winger should never cross the ball in the box unless a player is in it. Its already difficult enough for a striker to convert a cross into a goal while being in the box (he has to beat 1-2 defenders + a keeper after all) let alone not being in it. Mind you Im not putting all the burden on the winger, I mean the striker need to learn to be at the right time at the right place which is also a skill that is difficult to learn. Stating that, if no one is in the box then holding the ball, pass it at the right back and move inside the box or try to go solo seem to be the wiser options.

PS Rowem Im talking in general here.

First off...in no way did we pay the 7 million that has been quoted.
I love this blind belief that the price is wrong. There is no indication to suggest otherwise. His former club claimed we met the buyout, surprising maybe, but not once has anyone at the club denied the £7.4m price tag. Given the surprise (and even ridicule) that fee has received, I think someone at the club might by now have denied it if it wasn't true. Would also help get people of Bebe's back if the club came out and revealed we paid (say) £3.5m for him.

Ronaldo was never a great crosser of the ball. He improved his general decision making greatly (i.e. when to go wide, when to cut in, when to shoot, when to pass) but he was never ever a Valencia style winger who looks first and foremost to cross the ball. I was expecting Bebe to be more like a Ronaldo (i.e. cut in and shoot) but was pleased with his willingness/desire to cross the ball.

.in no way did we pay the 7 million that has been quoted.

Why do you say that? There is nothing that says the club haven't payed that amount. What you are saying is just conjecture, until you prove that you are correct.

Watched the game. Looked very very raw when it came to decisions. First impression - doesn't look like a natural dribbler for me in the way Obertan, Nani etc are with the ball. Obviously he's not ready yet and need a lot of time to bed in. I expect his chances to come next season.

Well he seems quick and strong and very keen to cross. A quick player in the middle should be able to get on the end of things if he gets as many crosses in as that.

Looked very promising having sin him properley for the 1st time. Got that street unpredictability about him, but not as raw as i thought. Improving his awareness and passing and we might have a real good player on our hands!!

He probably needs a season in the reserves - but it looks like he has the raw talent and the physique to become a good player. I hope he makes it just for the sake that he has been written off before even playing a game for United let alone the reserves

United new boy Bebe has insisted: “I will be brilliant!”

The striker, who Sir Alex Ferguson shocked the world to sign in a £7.4m swoop this summer, is ready to step into Cristiano Ronaldo’s shoes and become an Old Trafford legend.

Bebe hit back at critics, who were quick to label him a flop after his move from Vitoria de Guimaraes, claiming he will prove to be another Fergie gem.

The 20-year-old made his first appearance for United’s reserves on Thursday – but told fans he will soon live up to his price tag.

“After a couple more games I will be better,” he said. “I have to be fitter because it’s a different type of football in England.

“I am going to be a brilliant player for Manchester United.” Bebe has made a meteoric rise from his humble upbringing to the bright lights of Old Trafford.

"Having represented Portugal in the homeless World Cup, he spent his entire career at third division Estrela Amadora before his move to Guimaraes this summer.

"Ferguson admitted he had never seen him play before signing him, but sanctioned the move on the recommendation of former assistant Carlos Queiroz.

Bebe was left out of United’s first three reserve games of the season, but was included in the 25-man Champions League squad despite mistaken reports he had been omitted.

He added: “I don’t know when I will be ready for the first team. I need to work hard and a lot.

“I don’t know when I will be ready for the first team. I need to work hard and a lot depends on the boss whether he calls me into the team or not.

“Sir Alex has told me he is very happy with me and he wants me to train more and get into the first team.”

Bebe admitted United’s interest – which came just weeks after he had moved to Guimaraes from Estrela da Amadora – and come as a surprise even to him, but said United’s Portuguese and Brazilian contingent had already helped him settle in to life in England.

“I am very happy to be at Old Trafford but the big thing is to work hard so I can play,” said Bebe.

“I have settled in very well with the team but I need to work hard to move up to the first team.

“I can play on both sides, on the left and the right. It doesn’t make any difference which side.

“It was a big surprise for me and for everyone when Manchester United signed me.

“It helps a lot having other players that speak Portuguese – Rafael, Fabio, Nani and Anderson are all my friends. Nani and Anderson help me the most.

“They help me because they speak Portuguese and they have come from abroad and they can help me to help the team.”

Nice attitude ....

Just pisses me off that he isn't tearing up the league and has not become a star player for us already. Bloody annoying that he's had all this time and we've paid all that money and he can't even put on a show against the Villa reserves. Boy.

/sarcasm off.

Keep learning Bebe - hopefully the raw talent they saw in you can be polished and they'll turn you into some player.

Got involved a lot more as the games wore on.. promising.

The basic ingredients seem to be there; pace and power. There is also a hint that his technique isn't too shabby either. Like Nani said a few weeks ago, it could be a case of nerves and the desire to impress at first sight that's dominating Bebe at the moment. Hopefully he settles in seamlessly, relaxes, keeps it simple and begins to show his natural talent during the course of this or next season.

Players like Bebe provide the manager with a welcomed headache due to what they possess naturally. From the little I have seen of him, he can end up playing anywhere in the attacking third.

Best of luck to him

Love that attitude. Having seen a couple of highlights, it looks like he's a little less raw than I thought and he could well be a very talented player for us.

He didn't play in the Homeless World Cup. I don't know why this keeps getting reported. Lazy stuff.

I remember watching him in the homeless world cup and the bloke was amazing.
