What Gaz had to say about the Bebe guy

timesofmalta.com - The best team won

Lots of our young players did well in the Carling Cup game against Scunthorpe last Wednesday
.
It was good to see Bebe get his first taste of first team action. There has been a lot of talk about him and I don’t understand why. Manchester United have signed so many young players over recent years, such as Manucho, Mame Diouf, Federico Macheda, Giuseppe Rossi, Cristiano Ronaldo, the Da Silva brothers and Chris Smalling, so I don’t understand the fuss about Bebe. It’s a bit unfair on him.

That said, it was good to see him play. He has a lot of raw talent, two great feet, he’s extremely quick and he’s learning all the time.

It's basically mirroring what scouts are after when they're looking at junior football. The bigger, stronger lads with a bit of pace, technique can be coached, athleticism is a natural thing. Obviously the cream of the smaller lads will still make it, but there is a focus on the bigger lads, certainly when I've spoken to scouts in the north Manchester area.

But isn't this what is wrong with our game we have a bunch of athletes chasing the ball?

Possibly, but it is a physical game. I'd rather have a team of players who can outrun and outmuscle people for 90-odd minutes than those who can't.

Would you rather have a bunch of unfit fat kids panting around?

Would make it more fun perhaps. One has to wear glasses too.

Ask Micah Richards.

The greatest players ever have never been the biggest and strongest. Having a low centre of gravity like Messi and Maradana and Rooney is a benefit. Ronaldo and Drogba are pretty fecking rare.

That said, size and strength are definately getting more and more important and the English Premier League has always had big and strong players.

I don't really know the point of this post.

That's not the case at United though. You should have seen our team lining up against Barcelona in the Premier Cup, the Barca lads looked a couple of years older.

Neville also said the 'two good feet' which would indicate good technique and very few players are comfortable off both sides these days.

He was surprisingly quick in his brief time on the pitch. Hope to see a bit more of him soon.

It's a bit strange he's missing the reserves game tonight. Slight injury, or they want to concentrate on his fitness program?

I think he was a bit sarcastic in his reply to the other poster who said "I can't belive Bebe is only 20 years older, he looks older...". I might be wrong though.

I thought so too but then realised he was being sarcastic...I think!

I'm not that familiar with Redwood but I remember some strange comments during the World cup. I might be confusing him (or her) with someone else though.

You haven't been here long, have you

Go try it out for a while and you might figure out what I'm talking about.

I (and others as well) couldn't honestly tell if you were being sarky or not. If you were, fair dues.

Although, I don't know if any poster actually linked his being homeless (which he never has been incidentally, not in the sense of living on the streets) and looking older than his age, so it seems fairly irrelevant nonetheless. Then again, I haven't read the page before in the last couple of days, so I could well be way off.

Just go camping and see what it does.

Or he's going on his first Champions League Away trip.

I had it in the back of my mind that he might go on the trip, but it just seemed a little unlikely given he did not make the bench against Bolton.

Can't see him playing, but it's another step closer.

He's definitely ahead of Obertan in the pecking order. I think a big reason for this is that Bebe looks like he knows something about the defensive side of the game.

PS: Can we get the thread title changed now if this is going to be the Bebe thread?

Agreed there, but IMO, it's because his game is more 'keep it simple' than Obertan's. He's a lot more direct, and more naturally given to crossing and shooting and taking advantage of his pace and strength, rather than an awful lot of trickery with the ball at his feet. Shades of a Valencia - Nani distinction here.

He has the ability to go either side of a defender though and seems confident enough to shoot/cross off either foot which distinguishes him from Valencia.

Obertan may have tricks, but often they appear more aesthetically pleasing than effective.

No, I agree with you that he's got more in his locker. I didn't mean 'simple' as a putdown, perhaps I should've said 'direct, uncomplicated and effective.'
