Not too much of a suprise, hasn't scored in Europe for a long time and the only reason we'd bring a striker off the bench is if we need a goal and Owen's more likely to make an impact off the bench than Berba.

I feel desperately sorry for Dimi, but it seems Sir Alex feels he can't count in him when it's most vital. Still, no-one can accuse SAF of not making tough decisions.

But honestly, I'd pick Owen over Berbatov if we had to put either one on in search of a goal, he's much a much better finisher and we all know that. I supposed it had to be done. He must be fecking gutted, none of us could have predicted this.

He also had numerous chances to convert against Blackpool last week and didn't - if he's not in the best of form at the moment and not scoring then he can't really complain. If he can't do it against Blackpool I don't think he deserves the chance to do it against Barcelona to be honest (although that is my opinion, it's not for me to judge or make these decisions, and thank God). In the Blackpool game, Owen was put on and he did score, tucked it away very nicely. A little thing like that might be the difference.
I love the guy, one of my favourite players, but in the Champions League latter stages it doesn't really work for him. And I agree with Leg-End, his track record suggested he probably wouldn't play.

Not for me. He should be happy that he's helped to win us the league, but in Europe he can't have many complaints. For some strange reason he hasn't performed to his level.
He will be here next season though.
Time for him to go methinks. It's clear his boss doesn't trust him when it really matters, rightly or wrongly.
Ironic that this is possibly his best season for us. And leading PL goalscorer (even if shared). Feel very sorry for him.

He'll be off in the summer there's no way he'll stay after this ... Next year it will be Rooney, Chicharito, Welbeck, Macheda and maybe Owen.
I don't feel sorry for him, hes had plently of oppurtunities to show he can do it in Europe but for whatever reason hasn't, plus we don't know what hes been training like or he might just not fit into the gameplan.

His last goal in Champions League was in his third month at United, November 2008.
The only champions league goals i remember him scoring are a couple against some jobber side and Celtic. It's not one of those is it? That's quite embarrasing for a guy of his ability.
Berbatov is one of my favorite current United players, but the fact is he hasn't delivered in the CL. He's also looked out of sorts the last few months. Owen came on against Blackpool and buried his chance. It's a smart decision.

Against Blackpool it looked like he wouldn't score if the game went on all night whereas Owen scored with a nice finish so it might just be down to form right now, how they've been in training. Dissapointing for him but 7 players from the squad were going to miss the cut.
I think alot of you are overreacting. Berbatov not starting is only a testament to how much strength and depth we have in our squad.

I guess that Fergie, for once, wasn't prepared to gamble. I can understand that, but I'm surprised Fletcher made it, because he surely can't be very fit?

I've never been a big fan of Berbatov but I am slightly surprised that he got dropped in favour of Scholes and Fletcher, I thought he'd beat one of them in since we are only putting one defensive sub on the bench.
I'm surprised we have 3 central midfielders over Berbatov.
Really? Are you? Scholes is a legend while Fletcher is a renowened big-game player according to SAF.

Being a legend isn't a reason, Scholes struggles with high tempo teams and that is exactly what Barca are, and Fletcher hasn't played regularly for months, it must be hard to accept being dropped altogether under such circumstances.
Its.not that - the team works better without him. it that simple.
might have been useful to hold the ball up if we're winning in the later stages.
