Berbaton? The new transformer.berbatovs in disguise.
He just looks so suave... in a non-filthy unwopish way.
The 30 year-old’s future has been in doubt since he was surprisingly overlooked by Ferguson in favour of Michael Owen for a place on the substitutes’ bench during the Champions League final defeat against Barcelona in May.
Bayern Munich, Paris St Germain and Juventus are all understood to be keen to sign Berbatov, who cost Manchester United a club record £30.75 million three years ago. And with Ferguson insisting that Owen will figure more prominently this season, the United manager admits he could have no complaints if Berbatov chose to seek a move elsewhere.
“Yes, I’d understand that,” Ferguson said. “But you could say that about them all. I don’t pick the same team every week, do I? I’ve only done that once in the last three years. But he has been brilliant, first class. His training has been terrific and he’s a good type of person. A nice guy.
“Missing out on the final was not easy, but there were seven or eight players disappointed at not being involved in it. But he’ll be all right.”
Although Berbatov ended last season as the Premier League’s joint-top goalscorer, sharing the Golden Boot with Manchester City's Carlos Tévez on 21 goals, he failed to score in the Champions League last season.
Yet in contrast, Hernández ended the campaign with 20 goals in all competitions and the 23 year-old’s form saw him elevated above Berbatov to become Wayne Rooney’s first-choice strike partner in his debut season in English football.
“It was straightforward.” Ferguson said. “Chicharito [Hernández] hit such bloody good form that you had to put him in for every game because he added so much in terms of threatening defenders all the time.
“It was just unfortunate for Berbatov. It didn’t make him a bad player, he was just an unlucky player in that this lad came in and did so well.
“But that’s football and it tells you about football, yet we [United] do that better than anyone. A young player will come along and emerge to take the position.”
Meanwhile, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is facing disappointment in his bid to re-sign Danny Welbeck with Ferguson insisting in Seattle that the forward will not be loaned out again this season.
Ferguson was critical of Sunderland’s dealings with United midfielder Darron Gibson before the collapse of his transfer earlier this month, but former United captain Bruce claims the relationship between the two clubs has not been damaged.
Bruce said: “Sunderland have always had a great relationship with United, even prior to my arrival here and long may that continue.
“I know Sir Alex is away and with the time difference I haven’t had a chance to catch up with him. Once he’s back I’m sure we’ll clear things up.”
Bryan Robson, United’s global ambassador was due to participate in the club’s soccer clinic at Seattle University on Tuesday night, despite being embroiled in controversy following Channel 4’s Dispatches programme on Monday.
Sir Alex Ferguson admits he would understand if out-of-favour striker Dimitar Berbatov chose to leave Manchester United this summer.
The Bulgarian hitman finished last season as joint top Premier League goalscorer, but was forced to make many of his contributions as a substitute after taking a backseat to Ferguson's preferred strike partnership of Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez.
The ultimate blow for Berbatov came in May when he did not even make the bench for United's UEFA Champions League final meeting with Barcelona at Wembley.
Warning
With six strikers currently at his disposal, Ferguson has warned his attacking force to get used to being squad players next season as they bid to retain their league title.
But the manager realises that might not be enough to satisfy Berbatov, who has been linked with moves to Bayern Munich, Paris St Germain and Juventus.
He said: "I'd understand that (if he wanted to leave) but you could say that about them all.
"I don't pick the same team every week do I? I've only done that once in the last three years.
"So they all understand it's the squad that wins the games, wins the cups and I've got a good squad that will be used in exactly the same way.
"They've got to understand that now and they all do."
"I'd understand that (if he wanted to leave) but you could say that about them all. "
Sir Alex Ferguson Quotes of the week
Ferguson admits he had no choice but to utilise Mexican striker Hernandez last season after he burst into United's first-team in blistering form.
He added: "The situation was straightforward. Chicharito hit such good form that you had to put him in every game, because he added so much in terms of threatening defenders all the time.
"It was just unfortunate for Berbatov. It didn't make him a bad player, he was just an unlucky player in that this lad came in. But that's football.
"But Dimitar, he's been brilliant, first class. His training has been terrific and he's a good type of person. A nice guy."
Injury
Berbatov will miss the second match of United's pre-season tour of the USA after picking up an ankle injury.
He sustained the problem during Monday's training session at Nike's plush HQ in Portland and was unable to join his team-mates as they went through their paces at CenturyLink field ahead of the friendly with the Seattle Sounders.
Although Berbatov's injury is described as 'a knock', at such an early stage of pre-season, Ferguson will not want to take any risks.
That looks to me very much like he'd sell him if a decent-ish offer came in.
The Languid One. Class act, on and off the pitch.
Still bother me that people think he will be replaced somehow. There's no way he'd want to leave. He's a better player than Hernandez, different player. Why would we sell him? Would be a big step down for us.
i agree that Berbatov is a classy guy, i do like and respect him. I just don't think he and United are a good match, cracking footballer though.
Very debatable point, as it has always been. Based on his last season, he scored the most goals and helped us win the title. So why isn't he a good match?
Obvious answer for many, is that he does not fit the United style of play. But then, would he have scored so many goals and played well in most matches if he didn't?
And what is the United style of play? If in general terms, it is fast-flowing, attacking and counter-attacking, he may be too slow for this but he makes up for it with his control, passing ability and hold-up play.
Anyway, depending on who we play, his style comes in very handy. imho, the United style of playing is something that has to be flexible depending on the opposition and on the performers that SAF has at his disposal.
Good interview. It's rare to see good questions asked to footballers
better than Hernadez? maybe. But United player better with Hernandez than with Berbs. Team is not a sum of parts.
United don't always play better with Hernandez. If he doesn't score in a match he does seem a bit lost and invisible.
Berba can make up for the lack of midfield creativity.
Berba is saying all the right things but are both parties doing the right things?
Why has it been left so late? What happens if he does not sign an extension by the end of August. Come the next window he can legally sign pre-contracts and his bargaining position is strengthened.
If we had this one way clause why haven't we not exercised it? Berba has said he wants to stay at United -so why all the delay?
What a performance against the All Stars, terrific game from Berba.
