Boris Johnson released from hospital

We’re on course to have the steepest curve of ANY European country, despite getting a 3 week jump on the outbreak, and a clear idea of what was going to happen by it hitting Italy hard first. Instead, at almost the exact time hundreds were dying over the there, Boris was saying “Maybe we just all need to get it? We don’t really need to close stuff... I’ve been shaking everybodies hands!..”

And now they’re trying to get people to blame each other, or footballers...anyone but them, for their lackadaisical approach not working...so forgive me if I’m not boarding the bootlicking bandwagon just yet.

I had Italian relatives messaging me at the time going spare, telling me they were scared for us because our government was mad... if THEY knew, then our govt should’ve fecking known. They’ve not done a great deal for their people, other than guaranteed to have killed more than was necessary.
First reaction from your government was absolutely stupid. But do you think they made this mistake on purpose. I can not see a reason the would.
For example, in our country we got new government just as it started spreading and new government was very quick to react and now when there is not a lot of people getting the virus some are accusing government we didn't need so much restrictions and that those restrictions hurted economy much more then it was needed. I am absolutely not one of them but the point I want to make is that it is not easy decision how to react and when.

No 10 has given an update on the prime minister’s condition and the wider coronavirus response:
The prime minister’s spokesman said: “Boris Johnson has a good night and continues to improve in intensive care at St Thomas’s hospital. He is in good spirits.” He continues to receive standard oxygen treatment.

Is being in hospital and intensive care for 3 days just for oxygen typical? He must surely be worse than they're implying

If he were sitting up in bed and interacting they would have put out an official pic to calm people down.

He's seriously ill and I reckon they are bricking it.

Or surely he would of posted a tweet or statement of some kind.

Don't think so. Even if he's sitting up and interacting like they say it's an extremely weak state to show the leader of a nation.

The British ALWAYS seem to be a nation of gullible donkeys led by selfish lions. Why do you never change?

I'm not sure incompetence is really an good excuse though.

Because of the the effects of centuries-long propaganda/indoctrination.

a picture of Boris Johnson’s face to calm people down? That might be THEE oxymoron

I would say yes but stable for now e.g. no immediate danger of induced coma or anything.

Only so long I guess they can peddle that line. If he isn't released by end of week/weekend (which sounds pretty unlikely) then public will start getting more curious as to why and press will really start pushing again I suspect.

I think we'll get a message soon enough, I doubt he's at death's door but he's probably not doing a lot at the moment.

Nah, there's no way they'd release a picture of a PM looking like shit in a hospital gown. Since he's been PM have you ever even seen him out of a suit and tie?

Hes in a bed because he needs oxygen therapy and monitoring, sounds like hes past the point of being able to do anything himself. They're obviously trying to mask the seriousness of it but I'd guess hes in a pretty bad way.

Thanks for the clarification, based on all we've heard (and reading between the lines) it does sound serious.

Reminded of this(Although I disagree with it for the most part)
The most repulsive thing here is the bourgeois “respectability” which has grown deep into the bones of the workers. The division of society into a scale of innumerable degrees, each recognised without question, each with its own pride but also its native respect for its “betters” and “superiors,” is so old and firmly established that the bourgeois still find it pretty easy to get their bait accepted.

It's slightly depressing just how much shit the English are happy to take from people in power atm.

I just like it when these Journo's get all Hyacinth Bucket when people call them out on their apparent bs.

Always said that without a monarchy you lot could have done so much better. The lack of a class system/monarchy is one of the reasons West Germany/Germany fared much better the decades after the war

I don’t think there’s much truth in that. If you want to see what kind of society the British/English would build in the absence of a monarchy then there’s a pretty big example just over the Atlantic. If you look at the top of any happiness indexes, which are generally populated by very affluent countries with high levels of social security then many of the countries have monarchies. New Zealand, Australia and Canada usually feature at the top and they all have the Queen as head of state.

I guess by ’done better’ you mean be a more socialist democratic country with a Keynesian type economy. I’d say that the electoral FPTP system is the biggest reason why that isn’t the case. For example, the Irish were getting in tiz about how left wing they’d become after the last election but still a significantly larger % of the UK population voted for Labour in the last GE than % of Irish voted for SF. There’s a myriad of other factors of course but I’d guess the UK would be a very different country with a PR system.

The claim is hyperbolic but there’s some truth in it from my experience. Anecdotally, a lot of people I know with low political engagement like him a lot. You have to remember that he won a significant majority in the last election.

At least they didn't have to look too hard to find a stock photo of him exiting a building looking dishevelled.

Not meaning to be insensitive but perhaps we can now pull our collective tongue out of his ass.

Just like the main Covid thread, I feel like some in here WANT bad news.....

Not wanting bad news at all, and on a personal level I’m glad that he’s hopefully on the mend. But the narrative that has been pushed here since he went to hospital is ridiculous. Any dissenting voiced have been hushed and it's all become about him.

Never mind the near 1000 that died today. Never mind the fact only 16000 tests were done today, which is somehow going to magic its way to 100k a day. Never mind the hiding of stories such as MPs getting an extra 10k allowance for supplies when working at home whilst hospital staff still don’t have PPE.

Let’s all of a sudden forget about scrutiny of the institution because the individual is ill.

It's good he's recovered.

However there will be ridiculous number of Churchill comparisons now. He's already loved by vast majority of press so now they'll transform him into a deity figure.
