Bundesliga 13/14

Mainz might qualify for Europe though. They're having a great season.

I meant for another 2 years or so, it's his first season after all there. They really have a great season. For a 20 year old he has been impressive.

He really has. You're probably right, but I hope he stays on. Thomas Tuchel is a good manager. He did well with Augsburg, and is doing well with Mainz. If the key players stay on, I think he can make Mainz finish top 7 consistently. The team has gone through a lot of changes since they finished 5th a few years ago, now they're getting close to a 5th place finish again. They had a really good game against Bayern München last weekend too, they were very much in with a chance to win the game up until they conceded with 10 minutes to go.

That's how I think he should line up but I'm pretty sure he won't.

The problem I see with Schweinstiger and Kroos in central midfield is that they don't offer enough defensive shielding for our back four and god know we will need that, it's the same problem when Khedira is playing who usually runs forward a lot and is one of the major reasons our defense ends up suffering. A defensive specialist next to a more creative but still defensively able CM is imo a must have for the double pivot a 6 and 8 combination so to speak. The double 8 that Löw prefers imo leaves us to vulnerable at the back especially if you consider that Lahm and Schmelzer are as well instructed to go forward a lot and provide some width in attack.

Is Großkreutz not good enough at right back for Germany to free up Lahm to play in centre mid? Lahm-Schweinsteiger-Kroos seems like a decent midfield solution.

Some rumours we have agreed a deal for Nuremberg's Josip Drmic, have read he is a decent player but not seen much of him. Any of our German fans know much about him?

It's a possibility after seeing him do well there for Bayern this season but I'm not 100% convinced about Großkreutz at the right fullback position even though he has done fairly well there. The problem is our defense is already pretty leaky as it is and changing it up with yet another player in our back four might really be a bigger problem then we can handle but if the situation in central midfield remains as it is and only Schweinsteiger, Kroos and Lars Bender will be available this summer we might have to consider Lahm in that position, especially if another central midfielder gets injured and with Schweinsteiger's injury record as of late you never know.

I haven't seen too much of him but what I have seen he looks like a very talented striker. I think it's likely that he will move in the summer but he has been linked with so many clubs already that I'm not quite sure where he will go. He scored an amazing goal a week or two ago I think it floats around here as a video somewhere.

There is a pretty big flaw to this link about Arsenal.

Having read the Nurnberg forum, Drmic doesn't have a wife... so how is his wife house hunting in London?

7 clubs below 30 points at the moment: Hannover, Freiburg, Bremen, Nurnberg, Hamburg, Stuttgart, and Braunschweig: Who do you reckon will be relegated straight away? I'm thinking Braunschweig and Stuttgart wth either Nurnberg or Hamburg in the relegation playoffs.

Braunschweig should go down, Nurnbergs home fixtures look easier imo than Stuttgarts. Hannover will decide who survives, they still have to play ALL of the clubs in the relegation fight.

I think Bremen will go down looking at their fixtures though. Those are horrible on paper.

Hannover 96 (A)
Schalke 04 (H)
Mainz (A)
TSG Hoffenheim (H)
Bayern Munich (A)
Hertha Berlin (H)
Bayer Leverkusen (A)

Bremen´s outlook for the rest of the season will depend on tomorrow´s game. If they can get something out of there they are relatively save sitting at 30+ points at this time.

I would not be so fast in counting out Braunschweig. I think they have the right mentality for surviving this or at least get into relegation and their rest programm is also somewhat "easier" than a lot of the other competition like Hamburg or Stuttgart. The latter is my first choice as relegation team. They simply lose too many games even when they go ahead.

Would really not mind Hamburg and Stuttgart going down with Braunschweig having a shot in the relegation.

I think Nurnberg can pick up at least 7 points in their remaining fixtures. If not more like 10/11. So getting 30 won't make Bremen safe imo. It's an interesting scrap though, as anyone can go down at this stage really.

Nürnberg will make it. They have something, which is worth pure gold in the relegation battle: a reliable striker in Drmic.
However, they are five other teams next to these two in the danger zone, so something like 32 or 33 points could be enough to make the 15th place in the end.

Anyone know why Stark was taken off at half time for Nurnberg?

He had a yellow card, other than that, he was also caught out by Nurnberg's pace a few times. He got the yellow card when he barged into Guédé on the wing. I think he was trying to cut him off.

Thanks for the response! Thought he may have got injured, but checked the Nurnberg forum and couldn't find any reference to injury. He played really well midweek, sounds like he has a lot to learn still! promising player though!

I don't quickly blame the referee, but this game was poorly officiated. He was not up for the challenges of a fierce relegation battle and failed to punish fouls the same. Stark was one of the early victims of the ref that evening.

Where do people think Mame Diouf will end up? Would he want to stay in the Bundesliga? Did he reject the contract earlier because he wanted more money or a better club?

he´ll join whoever offers money. He was linked to Dortmund a year ago, but in the end they werent going for him. I dont think that his priority is to stay in the bundesliga. Random guess: Newcastle or Wolfsburg.

Yeah, he needs to learn to anticipate the runs better when up against a faster player, I think. It was a really good game, by the way. Both teams going for the win. Downloaded it yesterday, to re-watch at some stage. Absolutely love watching Freiburg playing at home, the atmosphere is excellent everytime.

And I meant to write "Freiburg's pace" in the other post. Brainfart.

Was tempted to have a bet on Leverkusen. Glad I didn't. It's amazing how they have completely gone off the boil since the turn of the year.

I'm quite convinced we should put in a cheeky bid for Calhanoglu in the summer. He could really improve our right wing especially in terms creativity and attacking threat.

I've been impressed when I've seen him. In particular he seems to have great technique when hitting ball. How has he been throughout the season?

For me pretty much the only stand out player in a fairly shitty team. Of course he would have to step it up a notch to make it in the PL but I think he has the talent to do it. Especially in our current situation where we are rebuilding the squad I think he might really have good chance of breaking into the team.

How good is this Chalhanoglu guy at striking the ball? Jesus

How did Leverkusen just get away with that?

Brandt scores, I think he's the 17 year old. Adler with an absolutely hilarious error, bounces off his hands into the net.

Brandt goal. Adler with one of the worst mistakes I've seen in ages.

The one on Son, right? This official is awful, no idea why the commentator just doesn't say it how it is. Zoua had two clear penalty shouts within 5 minutes and a couple of minutes later Son had one.

I could've sworn one of the Leverkusen defenders did a handball to deflect the ball when Calhanoglu was on the break, but it wasn't clear and there was no replay

Nice goal from Westermann. I usually don't rate the guy and think he is a waste of space but that was pretty great.

Maybe playing him as a FB is a really good idea because he sucks at being a central defender.

Was that when he tried to flick it over his head and it went out for a throw in? Looked a hand ball to me too.

What a save from Adler. Amazing dummy from Son, can't believe Can missed that! Djourou is an idiot, what a reckless jump.
