Chelsea 2016/17 - Very Content

Beat AC Milan last night 3-1. Traore with a header from 1 yard, a penalty from Oscar and then a nice finish from an angle into the far post also from Oscar. A tremendous direct free kick from someone for Milan's goal.

I didn't see the game (will watch later maybe) but Aina, Terry, Cahill and Azpilicueta as a back four seem to be playing in pretty much all of our pre-season games.

We've got 1 more game left in the pre-season (Werder Bremen on Sunday).

My front runners for the title. Their squad is top notch. Have excellent options in midfield and attack. If they are able to acquire Koulibaly, their defense too will be sorted.

Conte seems like a manager who will adjust seamlessly to this league. His style of football is not the most exciting, but it's pragmatic; and pragmatists do well in the league. No European distractions will be a big plus in his first season.

It'll be between them and Arsenal for the title, with Chelsea edging it.

Insanity.

See what I did there.

Their central defense is still average as are their FB options bar Azpilicueta IMO.

I'd have as as a (distant) third favourite behind the two Manc clubs.

If Hazard maintains his form from the Euros and you guys shore up your defence, genuinely believe you guys will have a shot at the title. Signed the best midfielder in the league last season in Kante.

Only question mark would be your striker, don't really know what's going on with the Costa situation, haven't paid much attention to it.

Ivanovic?

Is that back four not a worry? It's the same players who were mostly pretty dreadful last season. I'd hate it if you bought Koulibaly.

Aina has been starting in preseason games, looks like he may get the nod

I've literally no idea who that is.

I think City are the favourites, and then Arsenal/ Chelsea/ United are about level behind them. Chelsea and United definitely have the potential to storm to the title though, I wouldn't say that we do.

Ivanovic dislocated his shoulder early in pre season. He actually came on for Aina at the end of last night's game.

We're a bit short at full back (Zouma is nearly back to cover centre back) for sure. Defence is a bit of a concern!

Aina will go on loan IMO, or needs to. As does Chalobah. Easy to look good in pre-season in fairness, my Chelsea supporting mate reckons last 3 pre seasons Moses has been far and away stand out player. Conte will be a busy man next few weeks.

Oscar, Moses, Cuadrado (possibly), Pedro, Aina (loan), Chalobah (loan), Begovic, could all go. Thats without Remy and the other loans

Aina won't go on loan unless we sign a full back, there's no cover at all if he goes.

I wouldn't mind Moses being given a chance but your friend is correct about him being a pre-season wonder.

Conte really likes Cuadrado, he's going nowhere.

If Chalobah goes I'll be annoyed but Pedro can do one.

Begovic won't go anywhere unless we sign another goalie. We won't be going into the season without an experienced 2nd choice.

Conte is a really good manager and provided some of their midfielders pull their heads out of their asses, Kante is an excellent addition to Matic and Fabregas. I fear them more today than I did a month ago.

Unless we have a few fullbacks lined up there's zero chance of that happening. He's probably going to start considering the alternative right now is Ivanovic.

Reckon they'll just clinch fourth over City and Spurs.

1 - Man Utd
2 - Arsenal
3 - Liverpool
4 - Chelsea

I was in attendance against Milan. Watching Chelsea live was pretty surreal.

Aina was torn a new one by Marcelo a few days ago, but he's been solid for the most part this preseason. Definitely needs to be starting. Chalobah was pretty impressive last night too.

4-3-3 is our best formation.

I keep hoping beyond hope that we just sell Ivanovich, regardless of cover. I don't think I'll ever forgive him for last season.

Starting to feel some real hope for this season though. Conte knows how to organize a defense, and with one or two new players at the back I think we have most of what we need. We're ridiculously spoilt for AM's, we have a great striker and a couple of superbly promising ones, excellent CMs (still hoping Matic last season was an aberration) and one of the top 3 keepers in the world. I think if we hit the ground running then we should be good for a title challenge, especially as the players will be desperate to show last season was a one off.

Trying to get the ball off/past Kante and Matic will be a bloody nightmare. Is there a stronger defensive pair in midfield?

We've sold Djilobodji to Sunderland for £8 million. That's at least double what we paid for him.

What the feck are Sunderland thinking?

We made a profit off him

Didn't Lil Wayne say, "Laughing to the bank like the money tickles", that's Marina Granovskaia right now.

You genuinely believe Liverpool will finish 2-3 places above City?

Why not? If I said to you last campaign Leicester would win the league you would've laughed at that more hysterically.

Klopp has had more time with his team to implement his tactics for the new season thus there's more cohesiveness in their team, Liverpool unlike City have no European football commitments which will benefit them domestically and overall I just think its going to be a tough challenge for Guardiola inject his system on that City side this seasons. I especially think they'll struggle away from home.

Possibly not, but it's preferable that a CM duo offers a lot more than they will in terms of attacking play.

True, though thats where the likes of Fabregas/Hazard/William etc. will have to up their game from last season.

I think the top clubs this season are going to really regret not going in for Kante and letting Chelsea have a free run at him. There were reports before he signed that Chelsea were his first choice so it might not have mattered anyway, but he could be huge for Chelsea's chances at success under Conte.

I don't know if this is the correct thread for this, but I am not sure where else I would put it...

What happened with Chelsea's spending? I'm not going to pretend that they're Bournemouth and hardly spend anything. They're still a rich team. But seeing Castles' latest piece naming high-spending clubs and including "early-era Abramovich" made me think

It seems strange to say, but I never really noticed that they stopped being the club who out-spent everyone. Obviously when City got the takeover, that would've clouded it a bit anyway. But their net spending - especially considering the current price tags to the old ones - isn't close to what it was.

When did they stop being that annoying club who out-bid us for Robben, Essien, Drogba etc? And when/why did their spending slow down?

You'd think I haven't followed football for 10 years asking this, but it's one of those things you don't realise until you think about it

They simply don't need to spend big, they are quite solid in just about every position except maybe a CB, which I'm surprised they didn't go all out for yet tbf.

To be honest, the team I'm worried about the most this season in the League will be Chelsea.

I know that City has two world class game changer in Aguero and De Bruyne, but I really think that Chelsea will be so difficult to play.

Always said that except their central defense, they are the most balanced team in the league.

And adding Conte to this team may make them top 4 for sure.

They may be ugly to watch this year, but Conte will make them even better.

They spent an awful lot last season, and Mourinho increased the wage bill.

Add in the money it took to get rid of Mohrinho and the money they had to pay to Eva and they've probably spent a lot there as well!

I preferred you when you got carried away with your support for the club. That was genuinely endearing because it at least seemed like your heart was in the right place, even at your most irrational (e.g. sticking up for Van Gaal long past the point when he'd made absolute shite out of our team).

Your newfound obssessive need to snipe about our current manager is a lot less charming. In fact, it's getting kind of tedious.

I think you'll find in the years you've been gone I have gotten more and more insufferable and the standards of my posts keep declining.

Not from what I've seen. You've always been a bit of a zealot but there's usually a thread of logic there. And you always argue your case well. Right up to the point where you start defending the indefensible. Like I said, though, football fans who get carried away by a desire to defend the club/manager against what they see as unfair criticism are kind of endearing. Much more so than the fans who make it their life's work to undermine and criticise. That sort of negativity is far more draining to wade through.
