Danny Welbeck

Why? His movement and positioning are very good when he's played centrally and he's a fine finisher.

Am I the only one who thinks having to do a lot of off the ball running for a mid-table team might actually be very good for his development? He's used to playing for teams who dominate possession and create plenty of chances, if he can't afford to be quite as languid for Preston as he at times has been for us, that's not a bad thing.
Agree. It will make a man of him too. Because it would aid his physical development and make him cease being so light weight.

Really good to see he's doing well on loan so far.

Our new loan policy: Only loan players to Scottish managers. It's working for Cleverley - now Welbeck and James will benefit.

He just hasnt transferred that to the first team yet. It's almost like he's holding back or playing within himself. Lets hope he rediscovers his killer instinct in the Championship.
IMO He most likely will when he gets physically stronger. Which playing in the championship regularly will make him. For I feel he wasn't making the impact he could in the EPL because of not being physically ready.

Welbeck loving life on loan

Striker Danny Welbeck joined Preston North End on loan last month. We caught up with the teenager to find out how he's settling into life at Deepdale and what it's like to work under the "other" Ferguson...

How are you enjoying life at Preston? You’ve played seven games now…
It’s going well and I’m really enjoying playing week-in, week-out. Actually, in the Championship you tend to play two games a week, so it’s been a great experience so far. Playing regular football was the big idea behind me going out on loan and it should help me progress as a player.

Do you get a sense that Preston are a club going places?
Absolutely. It’s a great club with a rich history and Darren Ferguson wants to take them back to the top flight. He wouldn’t be here if he didn’t think he could take Preston into the Premier League. He’s always looking for you to improve as a player and for the team to improve. Everybody here is the same – it’s an ambitious set-up.

So what are Preston’s targets this season?
Our main aim is to reach the play-offs. The players aren’t ready to settle for being a mid-table Championship side and neither is the manager. He wants to manage in the Premier League and he won't be happy with second best. He wants to take Preston forward.

What's more beneficial: playing regular football in the Championship, or training and being involved occasionally with United?
I’ve been involved with the first-team at United for a while now and I’ve been away on a few European trips. That's great experience but it reached a point where I was training a lot but not getting too many games. I felt I was doing well in training so the next step from there was to play competitive football on a regular basis, and I just couldn't do that at United. So it made sense to come to Preston and I’ve started every game since I arrived. I think this loan spell has been really beneficial and it will only get better.

Matty James has joined you at the club and he even scored on his debut. What does he bring to the team?
Matty’s a quality midfielder. You can give him the ball in more or less any situation and nine times out of 10 he’ll get out of it. I’ve played with Matty at United since we were 12 years old – we know each other's game inside out. If he gets the ball he already knows where I’m going to run, he knows where to pass the ball, he knows if I want it to feet or in behind. We’ve got a great understanding and I’m sure we’ll do well together.

What did Sir Alex say to you when he sent you on loan?
He was keen for me to be playing games regularly and he’s kept in touch a lot. He’s sent me texts before games and called a few times as well. He’s given me feedback on what I’ve done well and also told me where I can improve.

Did he get in touch after your first goal? People were comparing it to Eric Cantona’s famous chip against Sunderland...
Haha I’m not sure about that! Cantona’s goal was out of this world. But yeah, the gaffer sent me a text afterwards – he told me he was really pleased for me but that he would probably fine me for my celebration. I didn’t think I did anything wrong! It wasn’t like when I scored on my United debut against Stoke… I still don’t know what that celebration was all about.

What sort of role are you playing at Preston? At United we saw you both out wide and up front…
I’m playing up front at Preston, which is where I prefer to play. Playing out wide isn’t my natural position but I can do a job there. At Preston I’ve been playing right on the last man. Darren Ferguson has been drumming into me the importance of staying on the last defender and has asked me to make runs in behind the back four. He wants me to play like more of a traditional centre-forward. At United when I played up front I would sometimes be playing a role that would see me drop off a little bit and come looking for the ball. Here at Preston I’m learning how to play the other way and play closer to goal. It’s suited me so far, although it’s not something I’m used to. Growing up in the United system I always played a little deeper, so this is good experience. Hopefully I can get 20-odd games under my belt here at Preston and that will add another dimension to my game.

So what’s the "other" Ferguson like to work under?
He’s great. There have been one or two moments – things he’s said in team-talks mostly – that have taken me back to my time at United and reminded me of Sir Alex, but he’s his own man and his own manager. He’s really keen and he gets involved a lot on the training pitch, which is great. He likes us to get the ball down in games and pass the ball and play football the right way – he’s developed a good set-up.

I guess there’s no chance of a bad performance sneaking under Sir Alex’s radar, though…
Haha, definitely not. I think if I played really badly I’d get a cuff around the ear and the big gaffer would find out!

On Tuesday night, Preston played Derby at Pride Park. That's a ground you've no doubt got fond memories of...
Yeah, I scored the fourth goal there when United beat Derby 4-1 in the FA Cup last season. It was a nice little finish – Darren Fletcher played a one-two with Ryan Giggs and then rolled the ball to me on the corner of the box where I just curled it into the far corner. Actually, it was probably my best goal for United. My goal on my debut against Stoke was good but the one at Derby required more technique – I really enjoyed that one.

Finally, how different is Championship football?
I find it a lot more hectic than the Premier League. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been lucky to play with United, but here at Preston I don’t seem to have as much time on the ball. That might be the opposite of what you’d expect but at United we were so good at keeping possession. In the Premier League, though, the quality of all the players is obviously a little higher and the intensity of the games is higher. The defenders in the Premier League are top-class, too, so as a striker you need to be really perceptive with your movement and use the ball well. That said, I've already come up against some pretty tough Championship centre-backs. But it’s all good experience for me and will only toughen me up for when I return to United.

Any news on how he played last night?

Fairly anonymous apparently, with little service. James also struggled according to the PNE forum. It seems Ferguson is trying to change the way they play and made quite a few changes and as expected they are having difficulty finding consistency and some of the bigger name players aren't performing.

I think somehow I totally missed this whole story - I've no idea of the exact terms of Welbeck's loan agreement.

Does someone know if we can, or should, be getting him back in light of the news about Owen?

Bearing in mind Macheda's been out a while and Rooney's knee, wouldn't he be great to have around in the squad right now?

Diouf and Macheda to add to Rooney and Berba is pretty good. Even Josh King would be pretty amazing if we are stuck.

Of course if Rooney gets injured we are fecked even without Welbeck (or Owen) being availablle.

I really think Danny has a lot to learn about football so I think this loan deal is vital for him.

What I read today was the deal is such that he cannot be recalled.

Indeed.

There's still that little spastic in the back of my head screaming for him to be given another run in the first team, even at such an important time of the season.

Exactly, this loan is for the best for the lad and i'm well pleased he's performing above expectations.

He is not though. Apart from the some very good 1-2 debut performances, he hasn't been that great for PNE(According to the PNE forums anyway) whereas James has been impressive for them.

Welbeck is also injured btw

Our forward line is totally dependent on Rooney and it will remain so whether we bring Welbeck back or not. If the Scouser gets injured we are basically fecked

a) Berba has yet to prove that he can lead the line for us
b) the alternative (Diouf and Macheda) would probably struggle at a middle EPL side let alone against Barca's or Liverpool's defenses.

So our best hope is that Rooney is capable of keeping the tempo till the end of the season. No wonder why SAF was not happy that Capello (:cough: AC Milan's product :cough )) had allowed Rooney to play for 86 minutes against Egypt.

Yeah, they haven't taken to him as well as James, but still acknowledge his talent.

His injury is not as bad as first thought apparently. He had treatment back at United on his knee and is now in contention for Preston's away game at Plymouth this afternoon.

Looks like he hasn't travelled to Plymouth, he's looking cheerful watching the United academy game

Did his knee in against Newcastle and missed the tie against Cardiff: Preston North End | Match | Report | 27 February 2010, Preston 3 - 0 Cardiff

Looks like it was touch-and-go for Welbeck and he didn't quite make it. May have gone back to Carrington for a checkup with us and went to the match just because he was around.

"We are hoping Danny Welbeck is fit. We sort of know that he is ok but there is Neil Mellor, Chris Brown and Jon Parkin. We have just got to be careful with him because it is a specific spot in his knee and we have got to be sensible with the lad - but he'll be fine. At the moment we might know more next week but we are hopeful that he will involved Saturday.

Am I the only one who's concerned about that dodgy knee of his and how it might affect his career?

The dreaded tendinitis got mentioned a while back, didn't it?

He's still growing though. All sorts of weird niggles can clear up when someone stops growing. Steve Gerrard was perma-crocked when he was Welbeck's age.

Welbeck injury blow for North End

Preston striker Danny Welbeck has been ruled out of Saturday's match against Nottingham Forest after suffering a reaction to his knee injury.

The Manchester United forward, 19, has sat out North End's last three games and boss Darren Ferguson admits he is still not sure about the full extent of the injury.

Ferguson said: "The way it is looking at the moment he will probably be going back there [Manchester United], he's going to have another scan on Monday but it's not looking good.

"It is a blow for the lad as well because he was really enjoying it here, he was at the game on Tuesday [against Doncaster] and the lads were pleased to see him.

"He was looking bubbly and raring to come back but unfortunately there has been a reaction to it so he won't be available on Saturday."

He was back at United for treatment last week, can't imagine they'd let him go back if he wasn't 100%. So the fact that it's "reacted" so soon again is not good news.

Preston wait on Welbeck deal
Ferguson hopes to bring United striker back to Deepdale
15th June 2010

Darren Ferguson remains confident of bringing Danny Welbeck back to Preston North End if the Manchester United youngster does not join another Premier League club.

Welbeck spent a spell on loan at Preston last season and scored twice in eight appearances before his campaign was cut short by a knee injury.

The 19-year-old is expected to be sent out on loan again next term and is currently hoping to secure a move to a top-flight club.

However, if that avenue fails to bear fruit, then Preston boss Ferguson is expecting to be have the striker at his disposal in the Championship.

Frustrated

"I've been speaking to Danny and his brother, who looks after his interests, and things are ongoing on that front," Ferguson told the Lancashire Evening Post.

"My feeling is that they think it's right to try and get him out on loan to a Premier League club. But if that doesn't happen, if he comes to a Championship club, it will be us.

"One of the difficult things in signing players on loan from the Premier League is that their clubs often want them to do pre-season training with them.

"It's only closer to the start of the season that they're allowed out. That could be the case with Danny but, if so, we know what we are getting.

"He enjoyed his time here last season and was frustrated the loan was cut short by his injury.

"I'm looking for another striker this summer, one with more pace than we've got."

Think id prefer him to have a full season in the Championship rather than a bit part stop start one with a relegation candidate in the premiership

Definitely. He'd be a starter for Preston which would be beneficial for him in the long run.

There are very few teams he'd be a starter for in the Premier league. It could end up like Rossi's loan spell at Newcastle.

What Welbeck needs most of all, in my opinion, is to realize that he is a fantastically talented player. We sometimes denigrate arrogance in players, but if Welbeck had half of the self-belief that, say, Ronaldo does, he probably wouldn't be going out on loan, at all.

Admittedly, the fact that Sir Alex often uses young players our of position can contribute to that lack of confidence, but you could also argue that it's a test for them. I have few doubts that Welbeck is talented enough to become a Manchester United first team player, but he is also probably the player that most confirms the difficulty in making the final step up from youth and reserve team football in to the first team, particularly in the positions where you are exposed simply for not winning your team a game, even if you actually perform quite well.

I read a few times that Blackpool are interested, depending on what their striking options for next season are, it would be good if he goes there.
I think he is on verge of breaking through at the Premier League level. We have to keep in mind that he is still just 19 and for a striker that is quite young. I think we shouldn't really be judging him till 21-22 (he might well prove himself before that but we should be patient and i am sure that the club will be patient with him)
