England Discussion | Finish 4th

The fact that the Colombia match is going to be on ITV means England are going to crash out.

Shame we lost but it put us on the ‘easier’ side of the draw, I mean if somebody said we’d play Columbia then Sweden/Switzerland for a place in the semi’s then we couldn’t ask for a better outcome.

You said the same thing about Iran and Morocco vs Portugal and Spain.

It's not how football works, both Sweden and Switzerland have had very good results recently and that's been the case because they are good teams perfectly capable of having a 50-50 match with England or Belgium.

Portugal and Spain were never in any danger of going out

You'll get lots of flack. But there is truth and realistic insight in your post.

That's what annoys people deep down I guess.

I want England to do well. But yeah, the toxic political climate in the country is quietly tangible on the streets during England games already (depending on where you love, I guess). Saying 'it's good for the country', while normally true, is sadly not as simple as it should be during polically divisive times.

There are many England 'fans', who simply cannot handle any kind of success.

Nail on head there. It doesn't feel like simply football. A more sinister side which is linked to the current political climate is manifesting itself. Stuff like the German bomber chants. An extension of the mood that led to Brexit.

Quite hard to articulate - but it's palpable on the streets, as you say.

I like how you've created a fictional person in your head for some sort of half-baked comic relief.

It's really working for you in this thread.

It's not that fictional really. Just look in the stands at any England game.

Columbia..yep its my go to auto correct :(
Its OK to find yourself in that position but to actively look for it annoys me.
Like I said before, I would place you as favourites over everybody bar Spain, Belgium and Croatia so it's not an underrating England style of rant.
Is it because its England that people can't see it? Many times on here when we have a winnable run of games there's (quite rightly) plenty of fans reminding us to take one game at a time etc etc, don't look past so and so..
I have never seen so much attention paid to the quarter finals over the second round before, and its not a passing piece of analysis either. The whole build up and post match discussion has Brazil mentioned as many times as Colombia
I'm not from England :D

Anyways we don't know exactly what the strategy of both teams was - in the first half it seemed Belgium was also really actively looking for finishing 2nd with getting those yellow cards and after all they played their back up squad too. It would have look worse if Belgium fielded their starters and played to win and England played their B XI imo.

Isn't James injured? Calculated by Southgate. Beat a James-less Colombia and then Sweden/Switzerland and voila, you're in the semis.

Brexit talk in this thread. feck me.

I was thinking that. England fans have always gone a bit nuts when we win at a major tournament. But now it’s because we are all Brexit voting, European hating football hooligans that have some political undertoned motives to celebrating our national side winning a game :wenger:.

I was at the big screen in Lisbon for the Portugal v Iran game. The whole square was packed full of Portuguese and there was a deathly silence the entire game. Even the DJ tried to start chants. A couple of days before at the same big screen there were maybe 200 England fans for the Panama game. The atmosphere was so much better. But we can’t enjoy ourselves without being arrogant apparently. Maybe don’t take life so seriously?

Southgate can surely learn something from Senegal's first half against Colombia.

As good as Colombia looked in the first two games, they looked decidedly short on ideas against a Senegal team that kept its shape.

If I was England I would honestly prefer to play Brazil if you are asking me directly. Why? Because it is a glory game in a world cup and the sort of game the players would raise their games and hope to be the game of their lives. Against Sweden I could see the players thinking they could win it - underestimating Sweden and getting soundly beaten. On the evidence on some of the posting in here I am 100% right.

England have to beat Columbia to play Sweden and that just won't happen with the system Southgate seems to be insistent on using. You can't compensate for not having a midfield by pretending your centre backs are one.

The Panama game has blinded people a bit I think. England were very good for 30 minutes against Tunisia but even then the faults with the system were exposed and basically threw away all the good work, and turned the rest of the game into a slog.

Against Panama they did nothing and ended up 5 goals up. I've never seen a team score 6 goals and create 3 chances in a game. Then tonight altbough the game was meaningless the management was very strange indeed.

It's nice to see England giving us a reason to be interested and being likable enough to actually get behind, but at the same time it's mad how easily the pendulum swings from no hopers to plotting an "easy" route to the final.

Let’s be honest, England should be beating that Colombia team, and easily beating Sweden or Switzerland.

Anything less than the semi finals is a failure for this squad. I can see England beating Spain, but not Croatia who I think might just win the whole thing.
They are likelier to win against those teams but in no way it is expected to be straight forward .

They lost their first game, against Japan!

But it never is, particularly in a WC where most of the teams, even those who aren't favourites can block and frustrate your opponent, particularly if you are on a knockout stage, I am expecting from now on the games to be much more closed and won by small margins with few goals scored.

I expect England to lose to Columbia if they set up as they did in their first two games.

Having said that, getting knocked out by Columbia would hardly be a disgrace. If they do manage to beat them then they've officially had a good World Cup, regardless of what happens next.

I think if you wind up in a World Cup quarter final v Sweden or Switzerland and don’t win, it’ll be hard not to be Disappointed

If James is out I think England will win the game. I can actually see Sweden being a tougher game for England than Colombia. They gave Germany a proper game and put Mexico away with ease. They will deal with the Swiss I think. They are no pushovers and it should be 50/50 imo with England if both teams pass.

It would certainly be harder to take than losing to Brazil, true. In the grand scheme of things though a quarter final exit is about as good as I'd expect from this England side.

It’s a very together squad which almost counts as much as talent. I see them against Croatia in the semis where Croatia’s cleverness in midfield is a bit much for Henderson et al but at that stage who knows what can happen.

Would not surprise me one bit if England make the final here.

Southgate is absolutely obsessed with this daft system. He completely froze against Tunisia when they needed a goal and did the same tonight. When he brought Welbeck on for a full back I perked up a bit, might he finally be willing to change things up, actually try and win a match?

Nah, Rashford at right back.

Edit: On that topic, Rashford has been an absolute shambles in an England shirt hasn't he?

I think the only teams i'd be really worried about are Croatia and Spain so its not that great a draw. Still ... you've been one of the better teams, I'd rate you as marginal favourites over columbia to make the Semis.

Don't know why some are talking as if that was even England. It was England reserves and one with no benefit to win. The doom merchants were ready to pounce though.

Rashford disappointing but think he'll do alright with the 'first team'.

On another note it seems the Columbia auto correct that you pointed out has infected every other post!
Columbia's everywhere!

Precisely, anyone who says anything different is a complete melt.
Any country, pick anyone who qualified for the tournament, give them the option of playing Colombia in ro16 and either Switzerland or Sweden in the quarters after qualifying from the group and they would bite your fecking arm off.
Nobody gives a feck how you get further in the tournament or who you play you just have to get there.

@balaks you are very much mistaken. Very much.

I hope so.

This thread is messy. And no one can spell Colombia.

We have a great chance to reach the final tbh.

Croatia vs Spain is the likely quarter final and that will be a very tough game which will hopefully leave the winner somewhat fatigued ready for the semi final clash. We have to beat Colombia followed by one of Switzerland/Sweden. These are teams that we should really be beating without any hardship (yes we are England and we have the ability to feck up a simple task). But we should really comfortably reach the Semis and have a fairly decent chance at reaching the final and at that point its a coin flip.

Good grief. I hope you're right but bloody hell where is this confidence coming from?
