England player and another Premier League star set to come out as gay

When I played football I remember discussing this topic with teamm8s. Now I have gay family members and also quite a few gay friends I respect and love. So I didnt say much, tried to avoid saying things I wouldnt dare to repeat to them. At the same time I didn't want to shower with gay men either. I can understand the issue, it's not as black and white as some seem to suggest.
 I'm sure you're irresistable and every gay man would instantly jump your bones.

The reason being uncomfortable showering with a gay man (assuming you're fine doing it with straight guys) is homophobic is because it feeds into bigoted conceptions of gay men as being somehow predatory or inappropriately sexual. Watch any sitcom where a straight character goes into a gay bar and you'll see that stereotype, or if you want to be shocked go and read a tabloid from 20-30 years ago where they were happy outright linking homosexuality to paedophilia. The extent to which its acceptable to express views like that has clearly changed, but the underlying attitudes are alive and well.
to follow on from this, it's also the typical male ideaism that were a hetrosexual guy were to find himself in a shower room with 25 women he'd fancy every one of them (in some of your cases maybe you would, but truth is for me, i don't fancy certain types of women and thus i'd probably only fancy one or two in the room). Truth is, just because someone is gay doesn't mean he'd fancy everyone in the team and everyone in the team shouldn't feel threatened by his homosexuality because the gay person knows the others are married / dating / having fun with girls.

There's a little bit 'biggest gay in the village' about this. Sometimes when people say they don't care, they really don't care.
True. And one would think usually those people who really don't care wouldn't bother posting anything in this thread, since they wouldn't care about others not knowing that they don't care too. Or maybe they would make a passing remark like you did and be done with the thread. Not bleat on and on about the basis of why they don't care.

Having said all that, I really don't care who does or doesn't care about some player coming out as gay. Right. Now let me explain to you why...

Fer fux sake, please don't bother.

Im fine with, he might be not. What so difficult to understand? Think of him as a memeber of oppressed minority...is it easier to understand him now?

No... I am a member of an oppressed minority. Gay people are also an oppressed minority.

Treating someone different based on something they can't choose or control (sexual preference, skin colour etc) is discrimination.

Be very difficult for whomever comes out. Football fans are unlike any other sport fans - so I don't trust them to not shout some awful crap at the player in the heat of the moment. These guys will have to be mentally strong to deal with this.
What I don't want to hear is one of these players losing their mind or doing something crazy because they can't deal with the pressure - that is the biggest worry in all of this imo...
Furthermore, the media are going to go over the top with all their nonsense, that there is a danger the players will be defined by their personal lives and not by what they do on the pitch. It's all quite difficult really.

I don't particularly want to shower with any men.

Sounds a bit gay to me.

I go the local hot spring and it's full of men. I have no problem until some fecker wants to practice their English with me. I have no clothes on for feck's sake. Just go away.

A woman wouldn't have to be irresistible for me to have a compulsion to ogle the feck out of her in a naked shower situation. I imagine it's the same for gay men and men they shower with. So for that matter, it must be fantastic to be a gay man....I would spend all my spare time in public showers.

Do you feel discrminated by women who dont want shower with you after sharing a swimming pool?

Mate, what i am saying that people are differnt. Some are fine with eating pork, some are not. Let people do what they want to unless they harm other people.

If you've ever been to a gym, a swimming pool, a sports club or even just PE at school you've likely shared changing rooms/showers with gay men and not even noticed.

I don't think he really need to tweet that he's not, even if he is what does it matter.

Imagine if Gerrard comes out as gay. Carragher would probably be pissed off for not having a go at him

I know. It's not something that bothers me in the slightest. If a gay man wants to look at me naked, good for him. But we should at least avoid kidding ourselves by pretending that a gay man in a communal shower with other men will feel any different to a straight man in a communal shower with a group of women.

If women are allowed to feel insecure about straight men ogling their naked bodies, then insecure straight men should be allowed to feel insecure about gay men ogling their naked bodies. There's no difference.

I get what you're trying to say, but that doesn't excuse the fact that it's still discrimination.

I'm not suggesting that anyone can force someone to shower with someone else and in doing so will fix the problem, just highlighting part of the reason why gay men aren't openly gay in football.

By saying you wouldn't want to share sports facilities with your mates if they come out, you're harming them.

I hate this bigot word.
I would say that he is also entitled to his opinion and freedom of choice. If has a problem / discomfort with it is his right not to shower with gay men.

Obviously diacretion is advised and i guess it could be solved in a civilized manner.

I see this response so often on this forum. Whenever someone makes a remark and in turn gets called bigoted, homophobic etc., people jump in with this line about how he/she is entitled to his/her opinion.

Where has anyone said 'he's not allowed to think that way, he has no right not to shower with gay men and he's not allowed to feel as though he can express his opinion on the matter'? Nobody has said anything like that unless I've missed something reading through the thread, but it doesn't mean can't or shouldn't be called out for what will be perceived by some to be a homophobic statement (in this case).

I think this a brave move by the players, and it'll lead the way for more players to come out.

Some are saying who cares, but in reality those players, up to this moment, still can't live the normal life they want, they fear the abuse from the fans, they fear how it'd affect the relationship with their teammates, and how it might even impact their careers, i'm pretty confident that there're plenty of managers out there that would never sign a gay footballer.

Basically they're about to find out how coming out will impact their lives as footballers, so it is a big deal.

There are most likely homosexual posters on this forum, who are most likely reading this thread.

Some people need to think about that when posting.

Is The Mirror's story really "there are a couple of gay footballers but we are not going to name them, their clubs or when they are going to come out"?

Yes - they're trying a new, sensitive approach with a view to Euro 2016 instead of the expected: 'They do like it up 'em! Softy Player X is England's Lionheart!'

Is that based on one of our bellend ex players calling him a "sausage boy?" Which seems to have happened because he's educated and middle class, Le Saux syndrome if you will

Who called him? I'm going to hazard a guess at either Zaha, Morrison or Tunnicliffe.

A little bit, maybe between players there's some rumours, I don't know.

He sounds a little bit like Chris Smalling, very softly spoken.

We probably don't see it as a big deal in Manchester. We have a large gay community, an area called the gay village and are generally accepting people. Other parts of the UK however I can't speak for.

I'd like to think he wouldn't get any stick from anyone, but a lot of fans will probably be fine with it until the player dives or scores against them, then it will come out (excuse the pun). Embarrassing.

As for people suggesting Chris Smalling, he had sex with my girlfriends flatmate (a woman) a few years ago so make of that what you will. I don't want to get drawn into the speculation.
I honestly don't think Manchester is particularly tolerant compared to the rest of the country. Yes there is the gay village but its not exactly a huge area and most from Greater Manchester are unlikely to be aware of it or have visited. Always was full of Uni students when I went. Go a few miles away and the pubs are full of intolerant men cracking jokes but "not meaning any harm" just like any other pub in the country.
