Ratings are so overrated (and frustrating to discuss). They are even worse than stats.
Ratings on planetworldcup:

BEST PLAYER RATING POINTS

The official awards usually focus on decisive moments. If a striker is generally shit all game but then scores the winning goal two-three matches then he will get the golden ball and be legendary. So will be interesting during the match-threads to see how people argue. There are a bunch of team of the tournament players who have been rather weak in their play but have just made the team win in important moments. Which of course doesn't take away how slow/Sluggish/poor passing this player displayed throughout the other 89 minutes of the match and so on.
Can a defender handle Maradona because he was named in team of the tournament for 3 upset goals - if he was otherwise shaky defensively.

Getting confused about how Pol is setting up
What do you mean?
Trying to work out how they are setting up, other than to work out who may still need a player in a position you haven't picked. I have absolutely no idea what most teams are aiming for, I'm just tracking which positions they have unfilled and what the status is with WC winners, etc. before I make my even pick.
BTW, if a striker wins you three games scoring the decisive goal he has done his job, can't see how you could argue otherwise.
I am sure you don't really agree with that yourself as it is completely illogical.
If a player misses every pass and scores the decisive goal he is still doing his job?
If a player gives away the ball every attack and then scores the decisive goal is he still doing his job?
If a player scores 3 own goals and just one goal forward and also misses all passes and gives away the ball all game - he is still doing his job?
If a player sleeps on the pitch for 89 minutes then wakes up and scores the decisive goal he is still doing his job?
If a player scores the decisive goals all on penalties but apart from that has been absolutely shit -he is still doing his job?
Of course scoring goals are important, but being a professional footballer is 99.9% about qualities that isn't "decisive goalscoring". There are thousands of performances where the decisive goal-scorer was the worst player on the pitch. If your "logic" was correct then a goal-scorer would only be judged by goals/decisive goals.
He said striker.
Read again and I am sure you will find examples where a striker who scores the decisive goal in no way has to be performing well overall in the game.
You gave too many extreme examples. It it likely that someone is going to score 3 OGs and then a winner?
If a striker or forward has a poor but pops up in the end to score the winner(not a single goal but a decisive one), then yeah it does turn the poor performance into a good win. It is as simple as that. That's a luxury strikers enjoy over rest of the players.
Hilarious. A striker can score a decisive goal and still be the worst player on the pitch. It happens frequently.
It's more hilarious that you think it would be better to have a player complete all his passes rather than score the winning goal.

EDIT: Selling in Fontaine as the best player in the draft are we?![]()
Football is about winning in the end. Biggest problem football snob have is discounting players who pop up to score goals. Oddly underrated quality. Who cares if someone did gazillions dribble to skip past 10 players if his team is still losing?
I really think you guys are both on extreme opposite sides in your argument when all the grey area inbetween is where football is actually played. Very rarely will a shit player with shit performances score several decisive goals in a tournament. If he does, he's still doing something right, maybe for tactical reasons or just because he has brilliant timing and movement and knows how to leave his defender behind.

Ffs, where's Cal and why is no one sending PMs for his picks. We're having the weirdest discussion every fecking day because we have to wait all the time. Has it ever taken so long to get the draft done?
Thanks Cal, you just resolved a timing dilemma of mine. So keeper picks start now, eh?

I fully understand why no one is PMing though, the restrictions are really tough, imo and I think we all (execpt Anto probably) will have to change our picks quite often. It's not like you can send someone 3 leftbacks and be fine, you need to switch between continents/winners/years and often adjust other positions then.This. People need to start PMing more.
Possibly the best keeper ever, non-WC winner and pre-70s, works for me.![]()
