The thing with Benatia is that even if he is back in training, you can be certain that he won't be fit for more than 4 or 5 games in a row. But feck it, who needs defenders anyway. right? right?

Why so quick to get rid of Kirchoff?
When we sold Kirchhoff, Boateng, Martinez and Badstuber were fit and Benatia was about to return from injury. Now Boateng and Badstuber are most likely out for the rest of the season and Martinez needed another small surgery in his knee and is out for at least 4 weeks. It made sense to go into the 2nd half of the season with 3 healthy centerbacks and a 4th who should return within a few weeks.
We also bought Tasci as a reaction to the first 2 injuries, who is certainly an upgrade on Kirchhoff.
@Balu ah okay. Having injury prone CBs isn't great, we should know. But buying Tasci makes sense.

has tasci played a single minute of football for bayern yet? barely ever heard of him, throwing him into the deep end so early is very risky but looks like there aren't any other options.
No, he played his last game at the end of November in the Russian league. That being said, he has a bit of CL experience, he knows the Bundesliga, was part of the title winning Stuttgart team and has 14 caps for Germany. He's obviously not an elite centerback or anywhere near that, but he might do a decent job. And he needs every minute of playing time he can get before we play Juve. He definitely should start tomorrow.
Pep's been cursed with injuries at Bayern. How can people still call his stint a failure is beyond me, considering the circumstances.

I did forget that for some reason. but as Balu mentioned if his last game was couple months back in the russian league he'll definitely need to find some time gaining match fitness because juventus game is only 10 days away. and he most likely will now as badstuber is unfortunately injured again.

My hopes for the big games in the UCL are now very low already. Boateng, Badstuber and Martinez out for a long time with Boateng probably missing the whole season. A total desaster. We really have to rely on Benatia who's injured 90% of the time anyways or even TASCI who never has the necessary class and no match praxis. Messi etc would totally crush us like this.
You gotta feel for Badstuber. Without his struggles he could have been an all time great, instead people will only remember him for his injury troubles.

I think after the season we have to re-asses our central defence. We can´t have three injury-prone CBs (Badstuber, Benatia and Javi). It is too disruptive.

Yep. Frustrating, with Badstuber/Boateng we could have the best playmaking CB pair in the world...
Martinez should move to midfield and we should sell Benatia and add 2 centerbacks. That way Badstuber still has a place in the squad, because giving up on him just seems wrong. And with Alaba, Martinez and Kimmich we do have versatile players to cover if Boateng + the two new centerbacks + Badstuber isn't enough.
I don't think Benatia ever performed convincingly for us and his constant muscle injuries might not go away.

We struggled with injuries to defenders last season as well. Alaba twice had long injury breaks, Lahm missed a few months with his broken ankle, Benatia was constantly injured throughout the season, Martinez missed the full season and Badstuber had two long injuries, only playing in 15 games.
The main difference to last season is that we have Alaba fit (at least for now) and instead miss Boateng during the crucial CL knockout games. It sucks so much.

What's the average height of that team? 1,70?
I don't think any of them is actually smaller than 1,70, so it's probably an average height of 1,75 or something like that. But Alaba with his 1,80 is clearly the giant among the defenders. Neuer better catches every single cross that enters the penalty box or we're in trouble.
Average height is 178,6cm according to the data from TM. Never would have guessed that Vidal is 180cm tall.

I'm not sure what gave you that impression. Considering the discussion on this page and my comment in the post with the teamsheet I somehow struggle to understand how you came to the conclusion that I was complaining because of the single isolated game today:

Alaba has played more often as a CB than a LB, injuries or no injuries. He's got a CB on the bench but doesn't want to use him.
Seems like Pep has followed the United model and gone into the season with 4 CB's, 2 of which are more injured than not. Hardly surprising that they're out. Benatia is also back so you've got 2 CB's and Alaba against Juve. Not ideal but not horrible either. Juventus aren't any giants either.
You guys are still taller than us. Rooney was marking Terry and Blind was marking Cahill. Arsenal aren't big, Barca have never been tall. Personally I think height is overstated in football.

There's a difference between experienced defenders who aren't that big and makeshift centerbacks who have never showed any dominance in the air. Juve aren't that big in attack, but if for example Mandzukic is fit in time it might be a problem, even more when defending set-pieces. I still remember how Ramos destroyed us at set-pieces 2 years ago for example and it wasn't that different when we beat Barca 7-0 on aggregate in 2013 and massively exploited their lack of height. Also someone like Mascherano might not be that tall, but after years of playing centerback he's still much more experienced than a centerback pair of Alaba-Kimmich at this point. And Pique is actually above 1,90, which along with Busquets, who's also close to 1,90 certainly gives Barca a bit of height. It's not comparable to a central defensive core without a single player taller than fecking 1,80.
Yes, we have Tasci on the bench, but he hasn't played football since November and no one knows if he's actually fit enough to start, especially after his concussion last week. Benatia has just started training again. It's not like those are brilliant choices either. It's quite clearly a problem that none of Boateng, Badstuber or Martinez will be available to us in both legs against Juve.
