He has done, but the past couple of seasons he's been mostly in this role. I must admit I prefered him when he was more box to box. I think the Spanish think he's too tactically indisciplined to be a proper midfielder.

I last watched Athletic when they embarassed us in the Europa League. They still play some wonderful football. A decent striker is what they need.
Aside from his ability on the ball he has the tenacity. He's a little fighter and he's been in some good form these last few games.
Credit to Bilbao for their constant pressing, I predict they'll run out of steam in the second half. Hopefully.
Yeap. Reminds me of when they played us two seasons back. We could not get any passing going in the middle due to their pressing. Modric is completely isolated with an immobile Alonso in there.

You've missed a fair few poor performances in between, but this season they've been brilliant.
Very rare for him to get a red (except for that "tactical" second yellow in the CL a couple of years back) - he's interesting, he's one of those players that has a special immunity. A bit like Scholes did for us.
