Do not want to look like a "half empty glass" guy, but I do not believe that LvG has tactically improved our midfield or defense. We try to keep the ball at all costs, that is why the opposition have less chances, and that is exactly why our strikers are suffering. We are being over-safe imo. The game against Arsenal showed that our defense and midfield struggle against quality, fast opponents. Hopefully, LvG is indeed a genius and knows exactly what he is doing, however, I cant see us winning any major trophy with him in charge.
It's quite wonderful how you managed to contradict yourself in two sentences.

Not improved us tactically in defence? THE BEST DEFENCE IN THE LEAGUE - 8 Goals conceded.

The point is to keep the ball and yes not let the opposition have chances. But, you'd have to be naive to think LVG, who has traditionally been an attacking coach his entire life, does not want the team to score more goals. He's said it himself - "Even my mother knows we need to score more."

This is what is happening with our team right now. He has been drilling this team for one and half years now to keep the ball. We have now managed to get pretty good at it. The results show that the first step in doing this is that you concede far, far less chances to the opposition. So, now that the defence is set and so is the midfield defensively, what is the next logical step? To encourage the players to get that balance right in keeping the ball well as well as moving forward. This isn't as easy as it sounds. He was able to implement it easily in Germany because that Bayren team was full of intelligent, tactically astute players. The English game has never been known for their tactical acumen. The prem league has never been about that. It's all guts and thunder.

To change the mindset of a group of players who were brought up on the ideal mentioned before, he's had to bring in intelligent players and rebuild United.

We have to give him the credit that he has made us into a far better team than last year. The one Arsenal game has been a blip because we showed against City that even the most potent teams will find it hard to break us down when we're on our game. The Borough result is also a freak of nature. We should have buried that game many times over, but fate had other ideas.

The defence is now solid and set. The next step is to hone the attack. We're two points off the leaders. This is by no means a bad position to be in.

LVG is a world class manager. I think most of us would agree that he is in the top 10 in the world. How many of us are in the top 10 of our chosen profession?
We may not like how he is doing his job but his aim is to transform us into a champion team so we should allow him to do his job and support him as much as possible.

The football is different too; playing in England can develop parts of your game that might not otherwise get improved. When he was 12 or 13, Gerard Pique was introduced as Barcelona's future centre-back by his grandfather, a director at the club, to Louis van Gaal. The then-manager pushed Pique over and barked: "You're not strong enough to be a centre-back for Barcelona." Pique admits that, maybe, without the time he spent at Manchester United, Van Gaal may have been right. There, Pique says he learnt to use his body better.

Carrick stretchered off for England and Smalling had some kind of a hamstring injury. Do we have anybody in the U18s we can bring in to play?

his recent statement is more blunt

The reason I am happy to see that is because he booted a lot out in the summer, Welbeck, Nani who could play the wing roles but now he recognizes that we don't have enough options and that Mata isn't a winger!

His statement in his first season that we need speed and creativity on the wings is as blunt as it gets. It's important to him but he also wants quality players therefore Welbeck or Nani are not options. Until he gets that level of quality he will make do with what he has.

Welbeck doesn't fit the profile of creative winger at all so not sure why you suggested him and Nani wouldn't be starting, he has also shown he is poor when he doesn't have consistent game time so that was sensible too.

Take Young, he is hard working and can be somewhat effective off the bench, that's enough just about to keep him in the squad.

3 windows and he's sold the speed and creativity. he sold ADM after a season , sold nani , sold zaha and bought memphis and still plays mata as a winger. he needs to get his head sorted in regards to attacking players. he sold/parted ways with 4 strikers so far and just 3 this yr , 2 the yr before with welz sold and chich loaned , with one player coming in. so again after 3 windows he's back to where he started.

Arguably better first 1.5 seasons that SAF who I believe inherited a team that came 4th?

We were 19th in the league. The season before we went into free fall after Christmas, from ten points clear to finishing fourth - it was relegation form...which continued into the following season...prompting Edwards to sack Big Ron.

Quality is also important to the manager, in fact vital.

The man wants to build one of, if not the best team in Europe, not necessarily under his tenure but as it continues to develop that's the level it will reach, it's where he thinks a club like United belong. You don't do that with players like Zaha and Nani or players that don't want to play for you.

The team he inherited came 4th the season before but there was a lot of pressure on Atkinson because of our failure to challenge for the title and then the next season he got off to a poor start so Atkinson was sacked with the team 19th (22 teams in the league) and Ferguson guided them to 11th.

In Ferguson's first full season in charge he came 2nd. But since he was making a lot of changes he struggled a bit after this finishing 11th then 13th then 6th then 2nd again and finally 1st.

But the situations are completely different. And it really isn't comparable, you must judge Louis van Gaal to his current situation and in my opinion he has done well taking over a team that finished 7th with all the changes he made in what is now an incredibly competitive league but since he is already proven as one of the top managers in football, the expectation is understandably high, so it's moreso a satisfactory job.

A job well done is when he wins the title with us.

I'm confused...

He's activated the FM16 injury crisis challenge in real life. While I can't be happy with the timing (poor performance), I'm amazed at how he's done it... If only he could do it to others too (good performance?).

Pressure mounts for LVG. A warcry to the fans to 'get behind' the team... Moyes-esque that. Perhaps a sudden realisation that he shouldn't have been quite so ruthless in his cutting of the squad, or at least met his aggressive sacking policy with an equally aggressive purchasing policy.
I'm not a fan of Fellaini, never have been. He's an Everton midfielder. It's cringeworthy that he's actually being cited as one of Man Utd's current missing striking options while Januzaj is spectating at Dortmund. Bizarre really.

Will be another big test for LVG this weekend and as much as we should be collecting three points, with the lack of a striker on the pitch, it has 0-0 written all over it!

What an incoherent ramble.

Isn't fellaini injured anyway?

wiggy? rojo? really? what's our strike force look like? right , he's not been very quality driven has he.

What's incoherent about it?

The Moyes comparison is forced and predominantly stupid. Reading too much into words at a press conference is tedious. The assertion that we haven't spent aggressively is also stupid given the money we've spent and the huge turnover of playing staff over the last eighteen months.

The Fellaini jibe is just a random pop in amongst about five other points. He isn't a serious alternative as a striker here either, contrary the poster's assertion. Van Gaal implied that he could play up top back in the summer, but given he's played there once all season long we can safely say that he isn't perceived to be a genuine centre forward option here.

No, you're so wrong.

4 points off the top and 1st in our CL group in November with a favourable run. Seriously what pressure are you talking about ? Just because you want the man to sweat doesn't mean he will.

It's days like today that frustrate the feck out of me with Van Gaal, every time something is going well it's as if he has this need to disrupt it for whatever reason. There was no need whatsoever to change to a back 3 today, Jones injury didn't make the change necessary, it's like he looks to fix problems where there aren't any.
We've won the game but in all honesty we've won it in spite of Van Gaal not because of.

why de gea was man of the match , thought he'd just play 4 with blind going into midf. top of the tree. ugly but effective.

The finishing was poor and unlucky, the passing was inaccurate, the players couldn't keep possesion at the stage of the game they needed to, counters were waisted by overplaying and passing behind the man, the referee gave a very soft penalty that should have been disallowed, the squad was plagued by injuries before and during the match and still we won the game. So lets blame the manager's tactics.

I am willing to blame him and them for the 3 points today

None of those things were happening before the change, the players lost their effectiveness because of the change, if you're randomly asked to change to a formation you've not played in for a year, how can you be expected to just flowingly adjust. It was a daft tactical change, simple as that.
Soft penalty? lol it was a stone waller ffs.

3 at the back wasnt the problem. But I do think Rojo on instead of an outfield meant we were not as strong up top. However the "casualness" up front (when we really should have scored three or four) and then the stupidity of Rojo almost cost us. Their chances came from stupidity / individual mistakes moreso than a formation change. The passing shouldnt be affected that much (especially simple passes that cant be made to your own players).

Saying that, he really needs to be praised for our defence. 1 set piece goal (penalty) conceded in 10 hours of football.

Made the best out of a team filled with injuries, even during the game. This is where we were last season, it's clear progress has been made:

The way we started off the game was brilliant, we really should have been 2 or 3 up and he shouldn't be blamed for that. Just so glad we scratched and clawed our way to 3 points.

The real test is against PSV.

I really do like his faith in the youth. McNair and Pereira coming on in a tough away game when only 1-0 up, with Lingard getting the full 90 mins.

It was just such an unnecessary, negative move from Van Gaal today. We were well on top and looking genuinely cohesive in attack.
Changing the entire shape of the side, on the fly, to a failed system which we haven't used in 10 months was just idiocy.

First time I've been properly disappointed with his management. Why not just bring Pereira on or if there were question marks over Pereira, send Young up into the attack and put Mata in the middle.

Louis van Gaal signed the guy who scored the winner, or assisted if it goes down as an own goal. He has been training this team for over a season now, the reason we won is because of Louis van Gaal and his staff.

IS that actually a real response?

Some people are crazy or really obviously biased. We won in spite of van Gaal?

What is this idiocy? When we lose it is because the manager chose the wrong tactics or didn't coach the players well. When we win the manager somehow still made a mistake.
