Malaysian Plane crashes over the Ukraine | 17th July 2014

Yeah...Malaysia doesn't really have any clout. Nothing much happened after the Korean jet was shot down.

Unfortunately malaysia do not have enough economic resources to punish Russia if the Russia really did that

It is somewhat relevant... For people expecting shit to hit the fan, its not going to happen. Russians will pay compensation of sorts and all will be back to normal except for the families of the 295. RIP.

Considering my post didn't mention any countries at all, I'm not so sure.

It was a buk launcher apparently.

Basically,

Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's Interior Minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday

But shit did hit the fan in the case mentioned. It led to a horrific terrorist attack and years of political unrest between the two countries.

Ukrainians will blame Putin, Putin will blame Ukraine and the west will blame Putin but nobody will think about the Malaysians.

Just seen on twitter a Dutch guy who luckily changed flights.

Forgot it flew from Amsterdam, so I'm guessing a lot of Dutch passengers too.

Do you have more info about that? Admittedly, I'm only looking at wikipedia but the single Libyan airliner listed as shot down was in the 70s and it was done by Israel.

If you're thinking of the Gulf of Sidra incident that appears to have involved fighter aircraft only. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Sidra_incident_(1981)

The bad publicity will kill them even though it isn't their fault. People won't want to fly with them out of superstition imo.

Pan Am went bankrupt partly because of the Lockerbie crash.

The unrest was already there. Why do you think US ships were in the Gulf at the time?

This is fecked up. RIP :(

Is it confirmed that who shot down the Aeroplane? Shit's going down if it's Russians.

Agree with that, doesn't Malaysian airlines also have a spotty safety record?

Yes of course, but it overshadowed relations for many years after. It certainly didn't help, put it that way.

That's incredible. RIP.

Has to be a sophisticated missile. Not the first time something has been shot down in that region of the world.

MAS isn't having a great year. Most airlines wouldn't survive much longer after something like this.

But like someone said. Let's not jump to a conclusion. Let's wait for the investigation that will follow

There is an information that the separatists said that they shot down another An-26 (like they did 3 days ago) right before this. Maybe it's just a provocation though, who knows with them.

The US shot down a Libyan plane in the late 80s. Lockerbie was the retaliation iirc.

They also shot down an Iranian passenger plane

I think the US shot down two Libyan Air Force or Navy jet fighters in the 80's but never a Libyan civilian jet. They did shoot down an Iranian jet liner over the Persian Gulf, either due to a case of misidentification based on radar data and human error or a deliberate act targeting what was absolutely known to be a passenger jet, depending on who you believe.

Malaysian Airlines will probably go out of business now.
It is possible, after there other flight went missing they had a massive downturn in tickets sold, I dont know if they have recovered.
This will be another massive blow for them.
Has already posted they did have an excellent safety record, they have a well maintained fleet , with quite a few brand new aircraft, but if people wont fly with them , they wont survive.
But right now was is sadder is the appealing lost of life. RIP

Does NATO membership come into this at all?

Would be iffy. The Airline of course is not from a member country. That some passengers undoubtly will be from NATO member countries, as well as non-NATO member countries, not sure how much that plays into it. I guess it depends on whether NATO member nations want to consider this an attack on one or all of their fellow members.

My guess is that it won't be viewed that way.

Highly likely it was a SAM shot by the Russians or Russian insurgents shot down from Russian territory. Someone may have some explaining to do.
